Sam J. Varnell
Sam J. Varnell, Jr., 73, of San Benito, TX, died Sunday, June 4, 2000. Born in Kingland February 8, 1927, he lived in Crossett and worked as a paper maker with Georgia Pacific Corp. from 1944 to 1985 until he retired and moved to San Benito. He was a veteran of World War II and was preceded in death by his parents, Sam J. Sr., and Mary Johnston Varnell, and his brother, Veo Varnell.
Survivors include his wife, Crystal; a daughter, Crystal Courson of Star City; a son, Sam R. Varnell of San Benito; two granddaughters, Jimmie Ann Raney and husband Lance of Fordyce and Ame and husband Michael New of Crossett; a great-granddaughter, Michaila New; and a brother, Ed Varnell of Crossett.
Memorial services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 11, in the Jones Funeral Home chapel in Crossett. Burial followed services at Brown's Cemetery in Bierne, AR, at 11 a.m. on June 13 with arrangements by Jones Funeral Home of Crossett..
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Sandi Jo Funk Hospice Program, Valley Baptist Medical Center, P. O. Box 2588, Harlingen, TX 78551.
Mrs. Helen Wells
Mrs. Helen Wells, 74, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at her residence in Hamburg. Mrs. Wells was a native and former resident of El Dorado and a resident of Hamburg for a number of years. She was a member of the Green Grove Assembly of God in Strong. She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, Earnest Wells, in January, 2000, and her parents, Ed & Nancy Sisco Frisby.
She is survived by a daughter, Robbie Pryor of Hamburg; five grandchildren, John Pryor of Crossett, Justi Pryor of Monticello, Christy Thornton of Fort Worth, TX, Shawna Akers of Monroe, LA, and Kim Pryor of Hamburg; and three great-grandchildren, John Alexander Pryor and Justin & Dakota Dawson.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 8, at the Green Grove Assembly of God in Strong with Revs. Jimmy Adams and David Akers officiating. Pallbearers were Richard Myers, Larry Frisby, Jody Brannen, Justin Akers, Roger Wooten and John Pryor. Interment followed services at the Green Grove Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg.
Pearl Lowery Adams
Pearl Lowery Adams, formerly of Crossett, died in Frisco, TX, on Thursday, June 1, 2000, after a long illness. Mrs. Adams was a native of Brownsville, TN, a Crossett resident for many years and an active member of the First United Methodist Church. She and her husband were the first Buick dealers in the area and were also the original owners of the Crossett NAPA store. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wagner W. Adams, in 1977.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda Northcutt and husband Ron of Carrollton, TX; a granddaughter, Karis Gray and husband John of Frisco, TX; a grandson, Dr. Eliot Carter and wife Elizabeth of Sonoma, CA; a brother, Curtis Lowery and wife Ona of Tupelo, MS; and great-granddaughters Megan and Meredith Gray of Frisco, TX.
Family visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, June 9, at the Jones Funeral Home in Crossett. Grave-side services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Pinewood Memorial Park.
It is Mrs. Adams' request that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to the Visiting Nurse Association, 140 West Mockingbird Lane, Suite 500, Dallas, TX 75247-4929 designated for either the Eldercare or Hospice programs.
Neal Edward Farrar
Neal Edward Farrar, 54, of Crossett died Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at the Jefferson Regional Medical Center. Born July 6, 1945, in Crossett to James Maysel and Annie Joe Hill Farrar, he was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include a son, Kendall Neal Farrar of West Monroe, LA; two daughters, Kelli Michelle Sligh of Germantown, TN, and Carla Dean Mayo of West Monroe; his mother, Annie Joe Farrar of Crossett; a brother, Earl Farrar of Columbus, MS; two sisters, Colene Goodwin of Crossett and JoAnn Broadway of Jonesboro, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Friday, June 2, in the Jones Funeral Home chapel in Crossett with Bro. Don Justice officiating. Pallbearers were Jerry White, John Martin, Eric Broadway, Robert Lawrence, Bill Dew, Ben Carlton Lawrence, Larry Goyne, Eddie Ray Hughes and Buddy Farrar. Burial followed services at the Rawls Cemetery.
