June 4, 1914, to the late W.T. and Pearl Grant, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Irene Culp Grant; two brothers, Billy Ned and Faye; one daughter, Marjorie Ann Grant; and a grandson, Rusty Doss. He was a retired Georgia Pacific employee and past labor union president and labor organizer. He served in World War II with the 38th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron. Overseas 23 months, and he participated in the Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central European campaigns as an 81mm mortar gunner.
Survivors include his wife, Nelda; three daughters and their husbands, Barbara Doss and Gary of Crossett, Betty Barnes and Jerry of Hamburg, and Kay Collins and Bert of Crossett; two sisters, Rosemary Holland and Charlene Browning; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Grave-side services were held Saturday, June 3, at Pinewood Memorial Park with the Rev. Roy Craig officiating. Services were under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.
Mr. Ralph Victor Griffis
Mr. Ralph Victor Griffis, 56, of Highlands, TX, died Monday, May 29, 2000 at his residence. A resident of the Highlands area for 35 years, he was a former resident of Bastrop, LA, a supervisor for A. J. Munday Contractors and a Vietnam veteran. His hobbies were hunting, fishing, cooking and telling jokes, and he loved being outdoors.
Survivors are a daughter, Sheila Goldman and husband Patrick of Highlands; a son, Victor Ray Griffis; his ex-wife, Brenda Griffis Marsh; a brother, Calvin Griffis; sisters Jessie Freeman and Floy Powell of Monroe, LA, and Colleen Irwin of Houston; two grandchildren, Daniel and Blake Goldman; two close friends, Clark Cornelison and Daniel Marsh; and many other relatives.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 1, in the Sterling White chapel in Highlands with Bro. Paul Quinn officiating. Grave-side services were at 2 p.m. Friday, June 2, at the Hickory Grove Cemetery of Crossett.
Willie Junior "Hatfield" Hendrix
Willie Junior "Hatfield" Hendrix, 40, of Texarkana, formerly of Crossett, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at the Wadley Medical Center in Texarkana. He was a native of Ashley County, a laborer at the Ward Davis Pallet Mill and a member of the Pentecostal Church.
Survivors are two stepdaughters, Ebony and Wakeidha Purifoy of Fort Worth, TX; his father, Jordan Hendrix, Jr., of Crossett; his mother, Mary Lou Hendrix of Vallejo, CA; his stepmother, Betty Joyce Hendrix of Crossett; three brothers, Steven and Danny Hendrix of Vallejo and Gregory Hendrix of Crossett; and five sisters, Joyce Hendrix, Regina Montgomery and Sharon Hendrix of Crossett and Wanda Franklin and Leslie Hendrix of Vallejo.
Funeral services were planned for 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, in the Gates Chapel A. M. E. Church with Rev. Nolan Phillips officiating. Pallbearers were to be Cedric Haynes, James Hampton, Jr., Eddie Page, Frederick Montgomery, Ricky Parker, Larry Goodwin, Earl Hampton and Kenlow Hendrix. Honorary pallbearers were to be members of the Crossett High School Class of 1977.
Burial was to follow services at the Westview Cemetery, directed by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
Infant Matheney
Annajualiek Matheney, age 15 days, of Hamburg died Saturday, June 3, 2000, at the South Arkansas Medical Center in El Dorado.
Survivors are her parents, Maurice Matheney and Francesca Simpson; paternal grandparents Sandra Kay Martin and Wilford Howard of Hamburg; great-grandparents Valonia Martin Wallace, Allen Wallace, and G. W. and Lee Ester Howard, all of Hamburg; and maternal grandparents Thomesa Scales of Pine Bluff, Leonard Campbell of Crossett, Ollie Phillips of Hamburg and Joe and Lille Mae Law of Crossett.
Grave-side services were at 1 p.m. Monday, June 5, at the Carlock Cemetery with Mary Arnold officiating. Arrangements were by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
