Shirley Christina Brooks
Shirley Christina Brooks, 23, of Wilmot died Monday, May 8, 2000, at Wilmot. A life-long resident of Wilmot, she was a van driver for the Area Agency on Aging and a member of the First Baptist Church of Wilmot where she was youth choir director, Sunday School secretary and teacher. She was a 1994 graduate of Hamburg High School.
She is survived by a son, Bernard Brooks; two daughters, Adrianna and Tania Brooks; her parents, Lacey and Mary Bass Brooks, all of Wilmot; six brothers, William Lewis of Bastrop, LA, Steven Brooks of Grambling, LA, Evert, Willie and Darrien Brooks of Little Rock; and Casey Brooks of Eudora; five sisters, Willie Ann Jenkins of Shreveport, Rebecca Brock Smith, Glenda, Shirley and Angela Brock, all of Little Rock.
Funeral services were at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 13, in the First Baptist Church in Wilmot with Rev. James Crockett officiating. Pallbearers were William Lewis, Steven, Evert, Willie, Darrien and Casey Brooks. Honorary pallbearers were the deacons and trustees of the church. Burial followed services at the St. Martha Cemetery, directed by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
Mrs. Annie Bell Douglas Franklin
Mrs. Annie Bell Douglas Franklin, 75, of Monticello died, Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at the Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff. Mrs. Franklin was a native of Drew County, a resident of Monticello for the past 10 years and a resident of Longview for most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of the Mt. Peleum A.M.E. Church in Longview. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Franklin, in 1994; a daughter, Charlene Henderson, in 1996; her parents, Willie Douglas & Rosie Lee Thompson Jefferson; a brother and three sisters.
Survivors include a daughter, Eunice Franklin Pauley of Daly, CA; four sons, Charles J. Franklin of Tracy, CA; Willie Franklin & James Franklin of Monticello and Leazette Franklin of Kansas City, MO; two sisters, Willie Bell Douglas Block of Warren and Edna Douglas Allen of San Francisco, CA; three brothers, Rev. James Douglas, Al Wesley Douglas and Robert Jr. Douglas, all of Monticello; 21 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were planned for 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 16, at the Mt. Peleum A.M.E. Church with Revs. Nolan Watson & Daniel Franklin officiating. Pallbearers were to be Ardell Miller, Bobby Hampton, John Franklin, Edward Spencer, David Franklin and Douglas Pauley. Honorary pallbearers were to be Rev. Charles Franklin, Willie, James & Leazette Franklin, James & Michael Sawyer. Interment was to be in the Longview Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg.
Evora Hicks
Evora Hicks, 72, of Crossett died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at the Arkansas Heart Hospital in Little Rock. A native of Crossett, she was a member of the First Baptist Church where she was superintendent and secretary of the Sunday School, vice president of missions, director of the B. T. U. and had been youth director for 35 years. She was a retired cosmetology inspector, matron of Silver Star Chapter 306 of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of E. V. Reed Assembly #76, and state director of the youth department of the Regular Arkansas State Convention. She was also secretary of the Order of the Golden Circle Council of Deliberation, chair of the Martin Luther King Commission, and served as a member of the governor's advisory council on aging, board member of the Area Agency on Aging of Southeast Arkansas, and she was a past president of the Ashley County AARP. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Hicks; and a daughter, LaJetta Harvey.
Survivors include two daughters, Rhonda R. Turner of Milwaukee, WI, and Overtis H. Brantley of Atlanta, GA; three brothers, Allen Ford of Pine Bluff, Ray Ford of Crossett and Matthew Ford of Detroit, MI: two sisters, Emma Cummings of Oakland, CA, and Ruth Williams of Indianapolis, IN; and five grandchildren.
An Order of the Eastern Star memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 11. Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Friday, May 12, in the First Baptist Church of Crossett with Rev. Ricky Hicks officiating. Burial followed services at the Westview Cemetery, directed by Sims Mortuary of El Dorado.
Mrs. Ozell Holcomb McCain
Mrs Ozell Holcomb McCain, 87, of Wilmot died Tuesday, May 9, 2000, at the North Monroe Hospital in Monroe, LA. Mrs. McCain was a native of Hamburg, a resident of Monroe for the past 18 years and a resident of Wilmot most of her life. A homemaker and a Baptist, she was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel George McCain in 1984; three sons, James Arthur McCain, Daniel Otto McCain and an infant son, Charlie Wayne McCain; a daughter, Elsie Mae McCain and an infant daughter; a grandson and a granddaughter; her parents, Arthur and Pearl Sivils Holcomb; a brother and a sister.
She is survived by two sons, Leon McCain of Monroe, LA, and J.W. McCain of Texas City, TX; two daughters, Marie Taylor of Crossett and Mary Lynn Taggart of Jackson, MS; a brother, Frank Holcomb of Bastrop, LA; three half-sisters and two half-brothers; 24 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 11, in the chapel of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg with Rev. Donald Ray Bryan officiating. The pallbearers were her grandsons. Interment was in the Dry Bayou Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg.
