Opal Bunn Fuentes
Mrs. Opal Bunn Fuentes, a native of Hamburg and a resident of Mobile, AL, for many years, died in a Mobile hospital on Wednesday, September 13, 2000. A member of the Cottage Hill Presbyterian Church and the Order of the Eastern Star, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Diane Donald. Survivors include her husband, Frank Fuentes of Mobile; a sister, Helen Jones of Dermott; two children, Thomas R. Tippy, Jr., of Monroeville, AL, and William L. Tippy of Baton Rouge, LA; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services were held Friday, September 15, at the chapel of Pine Crest Funeral Home in Mobile.
Mrs. Beulah Bates Gates
Mrs. Beulah Bates Gates, 71, of Hamburg died Saturday, September 16, 2000, at the Weatherwood Nursing Home in Weatherly, PA. Mrs. Gates was a native of Ashley County; a resident of Weatherly for the past four years and a former resident of Springdale & Hamburg. She worked for Emerson Electric Company for many years. She was a Baptist. She was preceded in death by her husband, M.L. Gates in 1985; her parents, Walter & Laura Ellingburg Bates and a brother, Robert Bates. She is survived by a son, Floyd Alexander of Longmont, CO; a daughter, Beverly Gutosky of Weatherly, PA; a brother, Dewitt Bates of Hamburg; three sisters, Gladys Pryor of Monticello, Dorothy Finnley of Vidor, TX and Adine Irons of Montrose; and four grandchildren, Renee & Lori Alexander, Leslie & Josh Gutosky. Funeral services are 2 p.m., Wednesday, September 20, at the Sardis Baptist Church with Rev. E. W. Ricks officiating. Pallbearers are to be Jerry Pryor, Dale & Robert F. Bates, Lamar Rowe, Toby & Junior Irons. Interment will be in the Trafalgar Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg.
Darryl L. Hankins
Darryl L. Hankins, 58, of Crossett died at 10:45 p.m. Friday, September 8, 2000, at the Ashley County Medical Center. Born in Pine Bluff on June 17, 1942, to Z. L. and Bette Ruth Worden Hankins, he was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Lyn Worden; and his sister, Ruellen Speck of Pine Bluff. He graduated from White Hall High School in 1961 and from the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1961 to 1972 and was a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War where he served as a radio operator. He was a teacher at Pine Bluff High, Forrest City and Crossett for 12 years and was an amateur radio operator for 40 years. Survivors include his wife, Patty Hankins; their children, Tanker, Gidget, Sandy and Autumn of Crossett; a brother, Ronnie Speck and wife and his two children of Mississippi; a stepdaughter, Tabatha Tipton and her husband and three children of Star City; and a stepson, Carl Robinson, his wife and two children of Texas. Memorial services were Wednesday, September 13, at the family's home at 306 Etheridge Drive in Crossett. Also, memorial service was broadcast on amateur radio frequency 3.853 at 8 p.m. Wednesday, September 13.
Anita Kay Ford Hense
Anita Kay Ford Hense, 28, of Monticello died Saturday, September 16, 2000, at the Drew Memorial Hospital. Born September 2, 1972, in Hamburg, she was a housewife and a Baptist. Survivors include her husband, James Hense of Monticello; one son, James Ray Hense of Monticello; her mother and father, Violet and Lloyd Ford of Milo; one sister, Lisa Ann Ramsey of Bismarck; and her grandmothers, Joan Wells of Monticello and Dorothy Ford of Hamburg. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 19, in the Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Home chapel in Monticello with Rev. R. V. White officiating. Burial followed services at the Lone Sassafras Cemetery.
Ruth Magnolia Kemp
Ruth Magnolia Kemp, 93, of Crossett died Friday, September 15, 2000, at the Crossett Leisure Lodge. Born September 19, 1906, to William "Jep" and Annie Lee Johnson Underwood in Hampton, she was a homemaker and a member of the Second Baptist Church. She loved gardening and growing flowers. Survivors include a son, Finis Earl Kemp of Kingman, AZ; a sister, Melba Gwen of Burney, CA; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 17, in the Jones Funeral Home chapel in Crossett with Rev. Clay Courson officiating. Pallbearers were Kenny and Harold Pennington, Robbie Harrington, Paul Jordan, Wallace Beck and John Surratt. Burial followed services at Pinewood Memorial Park.
