Buel W. Young
Buel W. Young, 85, of Crossett died Thursday, September 14, 2000, at the Crossett Leisure Lodge. Born February 4, 1915, to James Mart and Lucy Cole Young in Story, he retired after 34 years as a bag maker for Chase Bag, Inc. A believer in the Assemblies of God, he was an Army Corps veteran of World War II. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and was an avid gardener and vegetable salesman. He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Alta Young; two brothers, Ruel and Royal Young; and two sisters, Ester Lambert and Eva Young. Survivors include his wife, Elouise Young; two sons, Royce and Bennie Young, all of Crossett; a brother, Jasper Young of Mount Ida; four granddaughters, Sandy McDill, Jennifer Bailey, Holly Young and Marcy Young, all of Crossett, and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 16, in the chapel of Jones Funeral Home of Crossett with Revs. Glenn Jenkins and Dan Webb officiating. Pallbearers were Bill Thomas, Bobby Jenkins, Mike Brown, Charles Langley, James E. Murphy, William A. Murphy, Cliff Bailey and Curtis McDill. Burial followed services at the Crossroads Cemetery.

Vergie Sue Brown
Vergie Sue Brown, 83, of Crossett died Saturday, September 3, 2000, at the Beverly Health Care center in Crossett. A native of Beekman, LA, she was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church on Florida Street. She was preceded in death by her husband, V. S. Brown, four sisters and four brothers. Survivors are a son, Felton Love of Crossett; two daughters, Peggy Anderson of Chicago, IL, and Mary Cummings of Pine Bluff; three sisters, Earlene Smith and Jotene Griffin of Oakland, CA, and Inez Tharpe of Bastrop, LA; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services are planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 13, in the First Baptist Church on Florida Street with Rev. Evandrew Washington officiating Pallbearers are to be A. C. Love, Thomas Lowe, Melvin Fudge, Joseph Evans, Freddie Lee Tharpe, Robert Trotter and Jessie Lowe. Honorary pallbearers are to be the deacons and trustees of the church. Burial will follow services at the Westview Cemetery, directed by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.

Mr. Louie Dean Huffman
Mr. Louie Dean Huffman, 67, of Hamburg died Tuesday, September 5, 2000, at the Arkansas Heart Hospital in Little Rock. He was a native of Ashley County, a resident of the Milo community outside Hamburg since 1967, and a former resident of Houston, TX. He was a machinist and former owner of Huffman's Machine Shop, and he was a member, deacon and song leader of the Egypt Missionary Baptist Church. He was a member of Prairie Lodge #462 where he was a thirty-second degree Scottish Rite Mason and a worshipful master. An U. S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, he was the Ashley County veteran service officer and was instrumental in helping establish the Ashley County Veterans Memorial. He was also a member of the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management. He was preceded in death by his father, Louis Huffman, in 1980; a sister, Virginia Huffman, in 1930; and a brother, Fred Huffman, in 1998. Survivors include his wife, Doris Kenan Huffman of Hamburg; three daughters, Debra Hashem and husband Hani of Monticello; Cheryl Mangum and husband Tom of El Dorado and Alicia McCone and husband Wade of Virginia Beach, VA; his mother, Effie Lou Estelle Huffman of Hamburg; and five grandchildren, Megahan McCone, Katlyn and Jordan Hashem and Wes and Lara Mangum. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 7, in the Egypt Missionary Baptist Church with Revs. Dale Crumby, Larry Clements and Steven Franklin officiating. Pallbearers were Greg Sivils, Steve Pogue, John Wright, Larry Kinnaird, Morris Pennington and Royce Culp. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Hamburg Prairie Masonic Lodge #462 and Norris Burchell. Burial followed services at the Egypt Cemetery, directed by Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg. Memorials may be made to the Egypt Missionary Association, c/o Mr. John Laing, 272 Ashley Road 454, Hamburg, AR 71646.

Mr. Vernon L. Locke
Mr. Vernon L. Locke, 67, died Tuesday, September 5, 2000, at his residence in Fountain Hill. He was a native of Fountain Hill, a resident of Fountain Hill for many years and a former resident of Crossett & Bastrop, LA. He worked for Georgia-Pacific and International Paper Mills in Crossett & Bastrop. A member of the Fountain Hill First Baptist Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army, he was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie L. & Mattie Jones Locke. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mary Oliver Locke of Fountain Hill; a son, David Locke of Houston, TX; three daughters, Debbie Keller and husband Doug and Donna Lindeman and husband Andy of Bastrop, LA and Denice Musgrove and husband Douglas of Fountain Hill; two brothers, Julian Locke of Morrilton and J. C. Locke of Cabot; a sister, Valeria Smith of Monroe, LA; and six grandchildren, Carla & Matt Lindeman, John, Brittany, Justin & Jacob Musgrove. Funeral services were at 10 a.m., Thursday, September 7, in the Fountain Hill First Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Elton officiating. Pallbearers were Doug Keller, Andy Lindeman, Douglas Musgrove, Phillip Musgrove, Madison Musgrove and Greg Berry. Honorary pallbearers were Sterling White, Leon Roberts, V. W. Cason, J. L. White, John & George Oliver, Gene Stumbaugh, Buddy White and C.J. Middlebrook. Interment followed services at the Flat Creek Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg. Memorials may be made to the Fountain Hill First Baptist Church, c/o Mr. Velton Cason, 213 Ashley Road 482, Fountain Hill, AR 71642.
