Mrs. Virginia Garner Wilhite
Mrs. Virginia Christine Garner Wilhite, 76, of Hamburg, died peacefully Monday, Aug. 28, 2000, at Broadway Plaza Nursing Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Born in Rawls, on Dec. 26, 1923, the daughter of the late Ollie Bush Garner and Lavenia Estelle Deggs Garner, she grew up in the Hamburg area, graduating from Hamburg High School and Draughans Business College. She marriage and moved to West Monroe, Louisiana, where she raised two sons. She was employed as a secretary at Glenwood Hospital and later became an LVN and worked at St. Francis Hospital in Monroe. She was active in the business world and was named the American Business Women's Association's Woman of the Year in 1958. After retirement she returned to Arkansas. A member of Corinth Baptist Church, she moved to Fort Worth this summer after a decline in health. She was preceded in death by her sister, Irene Garner Miles of Crossett, two brothers and two sisters who died as children, and her parents. She is survived by two sons, Douglas Carroll Wilhite and wife Lynda Nelson Wilhite of Jacksonville, Texas, and Phillip Maxwell Wilhite and wife Charlotte Evans Wilhite of Fort Worth, Texas; two grandsons, Ralph Daniel Wilhite and wife Diane Riddick Wilhite of Fort Worth and Nicholas Paul Wilhite of Fort Worth; a niece, Shirley Miles Collins and her husband, L.A. Collins, of Crossett; a grandnephew David Vandarren Collins of Dallas; a grandniece Janet Lynn Collins Friesen and her husband Donald Wayne Friesen of Dallas, great-grand-niece and nephew, Katherine Lacy Friesen and Zachary William Friesen of Dallas, Texas. Funeral services were at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 31, in the chapel of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg with Rev. Travis Roberts officiating. Pallbearers were Don Friesen, David & L.A. Collins, Danny Wilhite and Mike Chain. Interment followed services the Hickory Grove Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg. Memorials may be made to the American Society for Deaf Children, PO Box 3355, Gettysburg, PA 17325.
Mrs. Wilma Thompson Bowman
Mrs. Wilma Thompson Bowman, 93, of Eudora died Tuesday, August 22, 2000, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe, LA. Mrs. Bowman was a native of Simpson County, MS; a resident of Eudora for 74 years and a resident of Azalea Estates in Monroe for the past three years. She operated the McMillian Dry Goods Store in Eudora for many years. A member of the Eudora Baptist Church, she was preceded in death by her husbands, C. D. McMillian and Byron W. Bowman; her parents, Charles & Maude McInnis Thompson; two sisters, Mattie Deville & Vesta Carlton; and four brothers, Clarence, Charles B., D.W. and Billy Ottis Thompson. She is survived by a step-son, B. B. Bowman of Las Vegas, NV; a step-daughter, Frances Miller of Little Rock; two sisters, Hazel T. White of Monroe, LA and Bernice T. Wilks of Bastrop, LA and a host of nieces and nephews. Grave-side funeral services and interment were at 10:30 a.m., Thursday August 24, in the Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Eudora with Dr. Tom Wilks & Rev. Bill Carpenter officiating. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg. Memorials may be made to the Mt. Carmel Cemetery Association, c/o Mr. Joe Lilly, P.O. Box 372, Eudora, AR 71640 or to the American Cancer Society, 901 N. University Ave., Little Rock, AR 72207.
Dedrick Lamar Brown
Dedrick Lamar Brown, 22, of Crossett died Friday, August 25, 2000, at the Ashley County Medical Center. A life-long resident of Crossett, he was a laborer for Ram-Fab. He was preceded in death by a sister, Keisha Dianne Brown, and his grandparents, Paul Dupree and Mansfield and Claire Brown. Survivors are his parents, Lee Fred and Dorothy Dupree Brown of Crossett and two brothers, Michael Allen and Rodney Parnell Brown of Crossett. Funeral services were planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 30, in the New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. B. J. Jackson officiating. Pallbearers were to be Undra Webb, Demetrius Webb, Eddie Hawkins, Jr., James Jones and Tyrone Moore. Honorary pallbearers were to be members of the Crossett High School class of 1997. Burial was to follow services at the Westview Cemetery, directed by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
Maxine Dunlap Harris
Maxine Dunlap Harris, 71, of Crossett died Sunday, August 27, 2000. Born to Cecil and Bertie Dunlap on October 28, 1928, in Green Hill (Drew County), she marriage Wirner Lee Harris, July 16, 1949, and attended the University of Arkansas at Monticello, formerly Arkansas A&M College. She touched many lives during her years as a school teacher and retired from Georgia-Pacific Corporation after 25 years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, and a board member of Cecil Williamson Ministry and United Methodist Renewal Services Fellowship. Mrs. Harris enjoyed traveling and R.V. camping with her family. Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Wirner, two sons and daughters-in-law, Donny and Beverly Harris of Hot Springs and Lee and Sherry Harris of Crossett; grandchildren, Jennifer Hunter and husband Harry, and Jason Harris of Hot Springs, Jessica Taylor and husband Chris of Atkins, Colton Harris of Monroe, LA, and Ben and Brea McCain of Crossett; two great-grandchildren, Neal Casement and Grayson Hunter of Hot Springs; one brother, Benny Dunlap and wife June of Seattle, WA; three sisters, Juanita Nowlen of West Palm Beach, FL, Martha Sue McClain of Monticello, and Dixie Jordan and husband Billy Joe of Oxford, MS; brother-in-law and sister-in-law George and Judy Harris of Monticello; two sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Sheila and Vernon Barnes of Crossett, and Juaniece and Terrell Wallace of Warren. Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 29, at the First United Methodist Church with Bro. Bill Williams officiating. Interment followed at Green Hill Cemetery in Green Hill, under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Crossett. Memorials may be made to the Memorial Fund at First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 728, Crossett, AR 71635 or Green Hill Cemetery Assoc., Attn: Merle Melancon, Treas., 2238 Old Warren Rd., Wilmar, AR 71675.
