Mrs. Iva Mae Bates
Mrs. Iva Mae Bates, 84, of Hamburg, died Saturday, August 19, 2000, at the Beverly Health Care Center in Hamburg. Mrs. Bates was a native of the Trafalgar Community outside of Hamburg; a resident of Hamburg for the past 30 years, a resident of Ashley County for most of her life and a former resident of Long Beach, MS. She was a homemaker and a member of the Promise Land Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ardell A. Bates; two sons, Robert Howard Bates & Marvin W. Bates; her parents, Cleveland & Elva McCauley Hill and two brothers, Elwin & Grover Hill. She is survived by a son, Richard Bates of Clarksville, TN; a daughter, Barbara Higginbotham of Hamburg; 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services are planned for 2 p.m., Wednesday, August 23, at the Promise Land Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy Bates officiating. Pallbearers are to be Sonny Streeter, Wayne Mosley, Dewitt, Alvin, Elvin & T.R. Bates. Honorary pallbearer is Ricky Coney. Interment will be in the Trafalgar Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg.
Irma Herron Blanks
Irma Herron Blanks, 94, died Wednesday, August 16, 2000, at the Golden Years Manor nursing home in Lonoke. She was born June 30, 1906, to Rev. Phillip and Irma Temple Herron. She played the piano and organ for the United Methodist Churches in Lonoke and Hamburg. In 1929, she marriage Lane William Blanks of Hamburg, who preceded her in death in 1958. In 1969, she retired from the Blanks Insurance Agency and moved to Cabot where she was a member and organist for the Hope Presbyterian Church. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Selwyn and Phillip Herron, and three sisters, Louise Akers, Sue Currier and Margaret Tracy. Survivors include her sisters, Jean Hadley of Denham Springs, LA, and Tony Rowe of Lonoke; her daughter, Carolyn Park of Cabot; her son, Gregory P. Blanks of West Hills, CA; five grandchildren and one great-grandson. Grave-side services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 19, at the Hamburg Cemetery with Rev. Dan Stiff officiating. Arrangements were by Griffin Leggett-Rest Hills Funeral Home of North Little Rock.
Cleotha Brown
Cleotha Brown, 83, of Crossett died Monday, August 14, 2000, at the North Monroe Hospital. He was born March 1, 1917, in Strong to Doc and Fannie Easton Brown. A member of the Exodus Lodge 403, a Baptist and a member of the trustee board of the First Baptist Church on Florida Street in Crossett, he was a crane operator for Georgia-Pacific and collected cars and trucks. Survivors include his wife, Vera Lee Brown; two sons, Cleazell and Charles Edward Brown, all of Crossett; two daughters, Virginia Brown Guilford of Upper Marlboro, MD, and Ruth Ann Brown Byrd of Suitland, MD; a sister, Inelma Freeman of Crossett; 20 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Friday, August 18, in the First Baptist Church on Florida Street with Rev. Steven Conley officiating. Pallbearers were Robert Dukes, Harvey Dukes, Jesse Lowe, Gordon Kidd, Donald Smith and Gerald Brown. Honorary pallbearers were Roscoe Lewis, Freddie Lee Tharpe, Charles Alford Guilford, Edward Charles Brown, Napoleon Charles Brown, Undra Stanley and Donald Thrower. Burial followed services at the Westview Cemetery, directed by Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.
Percy Hatchett, Jr.
Percy Hatchett, Jr., 56, of Monticello, formerly of Fountain Hill, died Sunday, August 13, 2000, at the Beverly Health Care of Monticello. A native of Hamburg, he was a retired mechanic and a member of the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Hatchett; his parents, Percy, Sr., and Ruth Thomas Hatchett; a brother, Anthony Hatchett; and three sisters, Emma, Wendy and Suzy Hatchett. Survivors include his wife, Rev. Patsy Hatchett of Fountain Hill; a stepdaughter, Regina Hawkins of Fountain Hill; a brother, Richard Hatchett, Sr., of Hamburg; a sister, Patsy Colbert of Dermott; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Friday, August 18, in the Bethel A. M. E. Church with Rev. Nolan Watson officiating. Pallbearers were Adolphus McHenry, Jerry Simpson, Douglas Withers, Marti Withers, Thomas David and Ricky Daniel. Burial followed services at the Norris Hill Cemetery, directed by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
