Ethel Lewis
Ethel Lewis, 89, of Parkdale died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, at the Leisure Lodge nursing center in Crossett. She was a native of Alabama, a retired dietician assistant for the Parkdale Schools, and a member of Zion Hill A. M. E. Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles "Charlie" Lewis; two sons, Jack Johnson and Leonard Lewis; one daughter, Earnestine Johnson James; four brothers and four sisters. Survivors include three sons, Charles "T. C." Lewis of Crossett and J. B. and Clinton Lewis of Chicago, IL; three daughters, Effie Mae Lewis, Rosie Lee Worthy and Willie Mae Hunt, all of Chicago; a brother, Allen Law, Jr., of Parkdale; four sisters, Leslie Franklin, Bama May, Rhodie Mansfield and Maggie Lene Case, all of Dermott; 67 grandchildren, 168 great-grandchildren; and 34 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, August 2, in the Penny Chapel C. M. E. Church with Rev. T. A. Broomfield officiating. Grandsons Manuel Boston, Andre Hollins, Kenny Lewis, Anthony Lewis, Shawn Keith and Sherman Worthy will be pallbearers. Burial will follow services at the Zion Hill Cemetery, directed by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
Robert "Buddy" Lewis
Mr. Robert "Buddy" Lewis, 50, of Beekman, LA, died Wednesday, July 26, 2000, in Bastrop, LA. A native of Ashley County, he was a scaler for G-P Timber Company and a member of the New Light Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Tyrone Lewis; his parents, Oscar and Odell Lewis; and two brothers, Oscar Lewis, Jr., and R. L. Lewis. Survivors include his wife, Latanye Boston Lewis of Beekman; two sons, Robert Lewis, Jr., of Bastrop and Stacey Lewis of Alexandria, LA; four daughters, Sharon Givens of Bastrop, Najeria Lewis of Portland and Shaneka and Angela Pittman of New Orleans, LA; four brothers, James Harold Lewis of Beekman, Cleophis Lewis and Cedric Haynes of Crossett and Kenny Wimberly of Houston, TX; three sisters, Inell Trotter, Mary Odessa Lewis and Betsy Miller of Crossett; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 29, in the Gates Chapel A. M. E. Church with Rev. T. A. Broomfield officiating. Pallbearers were Sonny, Deion and Ray Lewis, Donald J. Smith, Billy Taylor, Neil Sivils, James Adams and Dennis Williams. Honorary pallbearers were Carl Givens, Richard Carter, Curtis Boston, Jr., Robert Hampton, Michael Jones, and Robert, Jr., James Harold, Stacey, and Cleophis Lewis. Burial followed services at the Union Ridge Cemetery of Monticello, directed by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
James Edward Maxwell
James Edward Maxwell, 88, of Crossett died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at the Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff. Born February 4, 1912, to Lin Lenard and Lula Bertha Forest Maxwell in Crossett, he was a farmer for most of his life. Survivors include three sisters, Jewel Fleming, Annie Carter and Ollie Mae Taunton, all of Crossett; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday, January 31, in the Community Baptist Church with Bros. Dan Webb and James Halford officiating. Pallbearers were Ronna Dean Forest, Ron Tucker, David Duncan and Chad, Brad and Keith Maxwell. Burial followed services at the Hickory Grove Cemetery, directed by Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.
W. Farris Sawyer
W. Farris Sawyer, 86, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, in Monroe, LA. Born February 16, 1914, to W. P. and Lou Ella Oden Sawyer, he started to work for the Crossett paper mill in 1937 during the mill startup and helped organize the International Brotherhood of Paperworkers (now PACE) and was a charter member. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1942, and after World War II, returned to work for the paper mill. He and his wife owned the operated the Wagon Wheel Caf‚ from 1947 to 1955. Mr. Sawyer was employed as an organizer and union representative for the International Brotherhood of Papermakers in 1956. In 1960, he and his family moved to Houston, TX, where they lived until he retired in 1976 and returned to their farm in Milo, remaining there until 1998. He was a member of the Crossett Lodge #576 of the Freemasons for 54 years and a member of the First Baptist Church of Crossett where he was an active member of the choir. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Lindsey George and Ogden Sawyer. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Helen Little Sawyer; two daughters, Paula Hamilton and husband Robert of Atascocita, TX, and Lottie Jean Vincent and husband David of Sterlington, LA; two grandsons, Keith William Welshimer of Twenty Nine Palms, CA, and David Gentry Vincent of Houston, TX; two granddaughters, Cheri Ingram of Houston and Suzanne Hamilton of Atascocita, TX; a great-grandson, Blake Ingram of Houston, TX; two sisters, Lee Ella Ely of North Crossett and Luna Broach of Milo; and a brother, Billy Sawyer of Milo. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 26, in the Jones Funeral Home chapel in Crossett with Bro. Titsworth officiating. Burial followed services at Pinewood Memorial Park.
