Mr. Charles Samuel Weatherly
Mr. Charles Samuel Weatherly, 77, died Tuesday, July 25, 2000, at his home outside of Wilmot. A native of Monroe County and a resident of Wilmot for the past 32 years, he was a former resident of Brinkley. He was a retired farmer and an U. S. Navy veteran of World War II. He attended the Maranatha Assembly of God Church in Wilmot. He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Susie Jackson Weatherly and three brothers, Louie, Arthur and Ira Weatherly. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Helen Beatrice Brann Weatherly of Wilmot; two sons, Richard & Phillip Weatherly, both of Wilmot; three daughters, Barbara Fitts of Brinkley, Judy Bailey of Newport and Cindy Cossey of Fountain Hill; 13 grandchildren, Harold & Ryan Fitts, Lisa Bailey Roland, Bobby & Jonathan Bailey, Clinton, Blake and Lee Weatherly, Carrie Weatherly Morris, Shawn Cossey Hickman, Crystal, Chassity and Cecil Ray Cossey; and 16 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 27, in the chapel of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg with Revs. Randell Eddlemon and Roger West officiating. Pallbearers were grandsons Clinton, Blake & Lee Weatherly, Ryan & Harold Fitts, Bobby & Jonathan Bailey and Cecil R. Cossey. Interment followed services at the Wilmot Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Maranatha Assembly of God Church, 1879 Hwy 52, Wilmot, AR 71676.
Felma Henry Webb
Sister Felma Henry Webb was born August 25, 1918, to the late Aaron and Maybell Henry and died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at her home in Crossett. She was a member of the Church of Living God Pillar Ground Truth in Haynesville, LA. She was marriage to the late Ivory Webb and was the mother of 11. Three children, Gene Audrey Webb, Shelia Taylor and Verda Mae Washington, preceded her in death, as did four sister and two brothers. Survivors include three sons, Arlester Webb of Crossett, John and wife Elizabeth Webb and Charles Ray and wife Gloria Webb of Texarkana, TX; five daughters, Shirley and husband Newt Washington, Mary Hawkins, Linda and husband Charles Edwards and Annie Mae Webb of Crossett and Gloria and husband Johnnie Jones of Chicago, IL; 28 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 29, in the New Bethel Baptist Church with Revs. E. G. Colquitt and B. J. Jackson officiating. Pallbearers were Nakia Hawkins, Timothy Hawkins, Charles Jones, Tracy Webb, Donnie Webb and Johnnie Hughes. Honorary pallbearers were Charles Ray, John Ivory, Arlester, Troy, and Leonard Webb and James Hampton. Burial followed services at the Westview Cemetery with arrangements by Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.
William Lafayette Black
William Lafayette Black, 85, died April 25, 2000, in Santa Fe, Texas. He was an internationally respected civil engineer, born September 20, 1914 to Howard Black and Effie Jarvis. A native of Hamburg, he was an Atlanta resident from 1962 until 1985. He served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers for 41 years and, while in Atlanta, was the Chief of Operations for the South Atlantic Division, retiring in 1976. Prior to moving to Atlanta, he served in the Office of the Chief of Engineers, Washington D. C. and, earlier, with the U.S. Army Engineer District, Galveston, Texas. He was an expert on the maintenance of waterways and harbors and authored numerous publications on the subject of dredging techniques and management of navigable waterways and harbors. He chaired a task committee on maintenance of navigable waters and a committee on regulation and stabilization of rivers. He organized and led emergency recovery operations following Class-5 Hurricane Camille in 1969, for which he was recognized with the first of two Army decorations for Meritorious Civilian Service. He received numerous honors and recognition for his contributions to the advancement of civil engineering. Bill graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY in 1937 and continued in service to the U.S. Army for the remainder of his career. Bill's memberships included the American Society of Civil Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the Society of American Military Engineers, Permanent International Association of Navigation Congresses, NARFE, Tucker Lodge No. 297, A.F. & A.M. Galveston Council No. 16 and Royal Arch Masons, (past commander). His brother, Truman Black, preceded him in death. The son and grandson of Baptist ministers, Bill was a teacher and member of the First Baptist Church of Avondale Estates and The Arcadia First Baptist Church. His grandfather, Reverend Saint Adolphus Jarvis was a prominent minister in Ashley County in the early century. Bill is survived by his wife of fifteen years, Vesta Johnson Black, his children Anita Orr, Bill Black and Vicki Black, of Atlanta; Alfred Black of Fairfax, Virginia and Cheryl Wilson of Houston, Texas, and their spouses. He left ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was laid to rest with his beloved wife, Rose Marie, at Floral Hills Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia.
Mrs. Peggy Sue Waters Bonds
Mrs. Peggy Sue Waters Bonds, 63, of Pine Bluff, died Wednesday, July 19, 2000, at the Ashley County Medical Center in Crossett. She was a native of Star City; a resident of Pine Bluff since 1985 and a former resident of Hamburg. She was the retired owner of Peggy's Restaurant in Hamburg and a hostess at the Woodlands Restaurant in Pine Bluff. She was a Baptist and was preceded in death by her parents, Bart & Elva Payton Waters and four brothers, Jake, C.B., Charlie & Duffy Waters. She is survived by a son, Bill Bonds, Jr.; a daughter, Tammy Bonds Shelton both of Hamburg; a sister, Alice Waters Hinkle of Pine Bluff; a cousin, Jeanette Cogbill of Pine Bluff; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Grave-side funeral services and interment are 10 a.m., Friday, July 21, 2000 in the Oak Grove Cemetery, at Yorktown with Rev. Klois Hargis officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg.
