Francis Austin Burt
Frances Austin Burt, 82, a life-long resident of Crossett, died Tuesday, July 11, 2000, in Mobile, AL. Born December 25, 1917, to Charlie Austin and Pearl Ruth Melton Burt in Crossett, he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Crossett and the Crossett Masonic Lodge #576 and was a former Crossett city councilman. As a teenager, he began work at the Crossett Mercantile store. In 1937, he transferred to the Crossett Company paper mill where he was employed for 45 years. In 1983, he retired as a supervisor for Georgia-Pacific and was the last original Crossett Company employee working at that time. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine Carter Burt. Survivors include a son, Charles Burt of Jonesboro, LA: a daughter, Jane Burt Locke of Pascagoula, MS; a sister, Mary Alice Grubbs of Crossett; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 15, in the First Baptist Church of Crossett with Dr. David Newberry and Rev. Billy Carter officiating. Pallbearers were Jerry Finley, Tommy Pahal, Gayle Deal, Eddie Deal, Burt Grubbs and Robin Grubbs. Honorary pallbearers were Chesley Peters, Walter McArthur and Jim Garrison. Burial followed services at the Carter Cemetery, directed by Jones Funeral Home of Crossett. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, Grounds and Maintenance Fund, 701 Main Street, Crossett, AR 71635.
Pete Hill
Pete Hill, 85, of Hot Springs died Friday, July 14, 2000. Born October 10, 1914, in Parkdale to the late Earle J. and Kate Williams Hill, he was a retired insurance fraud investigator and a member of the First Baptist Church of Hot Springs. He attended schools in Ashley County and what is now the University of Arkansas-Monticello. He worked as a reading clerk for the Arkansas House of Representatives for two sessions and as an undercover enforcement agent for the State Revenue Department. A veteran of World War II, he earned the Normandy, Northern France and Ardennes Forest campaign awards and attained the rank of captain in the military police. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and served as state commander in 1969-1970. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Velma Culpepper Hill of Hot Springs; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Paul Batson of Fayetteville; a grandson and wife, Geoffrey and Cori Batson Hill of Boulder, CO; a granddaughter and husband, Sarah Kathryn "Katie" and Jeremy Swearingen of Little Rock; a sister, Talitha Hill Lindsey of Panama City, FL; several nieces and nephews, and a dear friend and neighbor, Joyce Moore. Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Monday, July 17, in the First Baptist Church of Hot Springs with Dr. John McCallum officiating. Pallbearers were Larry Beckwith, Fred Bibbs, Bob Taylor, Geoffrey Hill Batson, Jeremy Swearingen and Bob Lacey. Honorary pallbearers included Drs. Charles Clifton, Joe Howe, Jim Burton, and Chuck Lane, Q. Byrum Hust, Sr., Al Lane, Jacob King, James Lacy, Frank Witts and pastors, staff and Sunday School members of the church and Larry Jegley. Burial followed services at the Crestview Cemetery with military honors by the honor guard of Thaddeus H. Caraway Post 2278 of the VFW with arrangements by Gross Funeral Home of Hot Springs. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Hot Springs building fund.
Mr. Arvey J. Hughes
Mr. Arvey J. Hughes, 88, of Hamburg, died Saturday, July 15, 2000, at the Beverly Health Care Center in Crossett. Mr. Hughes was a native of Bigelow, a resident of Hamburg for the past 51 years and a former resident of California. He was a retired truck driver for the Ashley County Road Department and P.E. Barnes Lumber Mill. A member of the Trinity Freewill Baptist Church, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alta A. Firestone Hughes in 1989; his parents, Charles A. & Ellie McCuin Hughes; two brothers and a sister. Survivors include a son, James Hughes of Hamburg; a daughter, Vera Morgan of Crossett; a brother, Evert D. Hughes of Hamburg; a sister, Ivey McCain Roper of Collinston, LA; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 16, in the chapel of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg with Revs. Clyde Mitchell, Jr. & John Peters officiating. Pallbearers were Barry & Steve Morgan, Jeff & Jimmy McCain, Dale Myers, Guy, Charles & Billy Jo Hughes and L.D. Myers, Jr. Burial followed services the Crossroad Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 901 N. University Ave., Little Rock, AR 72207.
Mr. Cleveland L. Jones
Mr. Cleveland L. Jones, 92, of Crossett died Friday, July 14, 2000, at the Ashley County Medical Center in Crossett. A a native of Yazoo City, MS; a resident of Crossett since 1981 and a former resident of Wilmot, he was a retired farmer, a Mason and a member of the Portland Masonic Lodge #499 and a member of the Midway Baptist Church at Dry Bayou near Wilmot. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert & Ella Allen Jones, a sister and four brothers. Survivors include his wife of over 70 years, Vernie Lee Ward Jones of Crossett; two sons, Charles "Buddy" Jones and wife Dorothy of Crossett and Gerald Jones and wife Mary of Monticello; a daughter, Louise Taylor and husband, Buddy, of Crossett; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great- great-grandchild. Grave-side funeral services and interment were 10 a.m., Saturday, July 15, at the Dry Bayou Cemetery with Rev. Cecil Harvey officiating. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg. Memorials may be made to the Dry Bayou Cemetery Association, c/o Mrs. Polly Wolf, 138 Ashley Road 378, Wilmot, AR 71676 or to the donor's favorite charity.
