August 26, 1922, to George and Velma Pearson Doss in Hamburg, he spent most of his childhood in Ashley County and attended school in Hamburg.
On July 12, 1940, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War II in the Pacific Theater. His decorations and citations included the American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Following his discharge on December 16, 1945, he joined his wife and son in Long Beach, CA. While there he worked as an installer and technician for General Telephone Co. for almost 40 years, retiring in 1977 when he moved to Ashland, OR, then Corvallis in the early 1980s. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Second Ward and an avid fisherman.
Survivors include his wife Cora Doss; his son, John Doss of Keizer, OR; daughters, Mary Ann Taylor of Duarte, CA and Priscilla Jan Doss of Phoenix, OR; a sister, Dorothy LeVesque of Hamburg; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services were at 10 a.m., October 5, in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Corvallis State Center on Harrison Blvd. The dedication of the grave and burial followed at Twin Oaks Memorial Gardens in Albany. Gabrielle "Gaby" F. Edmonds
Gabrielle "Gaby" F. Edmonds, 85, of Little Rock died Thursday, November 9, 2000. Originally from Paris, France, she came to Little Rock in 1946 after marrying James Russell Edmonds. Although naturalized as a United States citizen in 1956, she cherished her French heritage throughout her life. In addition to raising three children, she taught French and art at Our Lady of Holy Souls School, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral School and Franklin Elementary School in Little Rock and in the Portland Public Schools. She was a member of Our Lady of Holy Souls Catholic Church in Little Rock.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 17 years, James Russell Edmonds.
Survivors include her son, Frank Edmonds; her daughter, Annie Ross, both of Little Rock; daughter-in-law Annemarie Escouflaire of Germany; five grandchildren, Frederick Escouflaire, Monique Escouflaire-Englert, and Annette Escouflaire of Germany, Stephen Ross of Little Rock and Michael Ross of San Francisco, CA; four great-grandchildren, and many friends and former students.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 11, in Our Lady of Holy Souls Catholic Church with arrangements by Griffin Leggett Healy and Roth of Little Rock.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, TN.
Mrs. Annie L. Walthall
Mrs. Annie L. Walthall, 78, died Friday, November 10, 2000, at her residence in Fountain Hill. A native of Brandon, MS, and a resident of Fountain Hill for over 40 years, she was a homemaker and a member of the Fountain Hill First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tony Franklin Walthall, in 1983; a son, James Lee Walthall, in 1960; her parents, Wesley & Mattie Sue Kersh Smith, and three brothers.
She is survived by two sons, Johnny Walthall of Fountain Hill and Eugene Walthall of El Dorado; seven daughters, Gracie Spivey of Dumas, Betty Chance of Lake Village, Mary Davis of Fountain Hill, Juanita Knight of Hamburg, Susan Gifford of Fountain Hill, Nancy Coulter of Hamburg and Cindy Harris of Fountain Hill; a brother, Lester Smith of Fresno, CA; three sisters, Louise Walthall of Bastrop, LA, and Willie Jones and Wilma Barrett of Fountain Hill; 22 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are 2 p.m., Sunday, November 12, in the Fountain Hill First Baptist Church with Revs. Bill Elton and Edward Gulledge officiating. Pallbearers were Chris, Jonathan and Paul Walthall, Chris and Dewayne Bussell, Will Coulter, Eric Roberts, and Dion Darbonne. Interment followed services at the Flat Creek Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg.
