Mr. Robert "Doobie" Woods
Mr. Robert "Doobie" Woods, 64, of Hamburg, died Wednesday, November 8, 2000, at the Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff. A native of Ashley County and a resident of Hamburg for over 40 years, he was a retired farmer; a member of the Martinville Baptist Church and a veteran of the US Army. He was a devoted husband and father and an avid hunter and fisherman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Travis & Lena Moore Woods, and one brother, Pete Woods.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel Kelley Woods of Hamburg; two sons, Mark Woods of Selma, AL and Neal Woods of Hamburg; two daughters, Charlotte Woods of Hamburg and Deborah Woods of Houston, TX; two sisters, Hazel & Brenda Bolin of Hamburg; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, November 10, in the Martinville Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Wood officiating. Pallbearers were Joe Dean Graves, Richard Collins, Jeff Woods, Charles Bolin, Rudy Wrzesinski and Eddie Corder. Interment followed services at the Old Union Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg.
William H. Barnes
William H. Barnes, 83, of Moore, OK, died Sunday, October 15, 2000, surrounded by his loving family. Born January 24, 1917, in Monroe, LA, he grew up in Crossett. His life was a tapestry of science, music, outdoor activities and time with family and friends. He was an ardent Arkansas Razorback fan and was the son of Iley M.Barnes, Sr., who was mayor of Crossett from 1922 to 1936. .
He served in the U. S. Army Signal Corps during World War II and was wounded in the Philippines. He was most proud of being chosen as a civilian scientist and being sent to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he assisted in the development of radar. In the Public Broadcast System documentary Echoes of War, he is shown working on the radar technology that was instrumental in the United States winning World War II. He was educated at Louisiana Tech and taught electronics at various universities. An accomplished musician, he recorded several songs with Les Brown and his Band of Renown. He retired from the Federal Aviation Administration in 1975 and was nationally recognized for his "unselfish contribution of time and energies, off the job, to community voluntary activities without legal compulsion or compensation in such services.". He was a 32 degree Mason. He organized the American Legion baseball program for the city of Moore and personally presented American flags to the city of Moore, the Moore Jaycees and the Boy Scouts. He organized a charter chapter of the Civil Air Patrol in Moore and South Oklahoma City and served for many years.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Sybil M. Barnes; a son, William R. Barnes and wife Sharon of Tuttle, OK; a daughter, Donna L. Newsom and husband Donald of Edmond, OK; a son, Jerry A. Barnes and wife Rebecca of Albuquerque, NM; a brother, Iley M. Barnes and wife Doty of Chattanooga, TN; grandchildren Julie, Jonathan, Jennifer, Aris and Marian; and great-grandchild, Jonathan Grant; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 19, at the South Colonial chapel with interment following at Resthaven Cemetery.
Myrtle Dee Bright
Myrtle Dee Bright, 93, of Crossett died Saturday, November 4, 2000, at the Leisure Lodge nursing home in n Crossett. Born in Prescott on June 15, 1907, to Joseph William and Alpha Omega Lewis, he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Crossett and was preceded in death by her husband, William A. "Bill" Bright, three brothers and a sister.
Survivors include a son, William L. Bright and wife Gail of Oklahoma City, OK; a daughter, Barbara Gates and husband Mike of Crossett; a brother, Glen Lewis of Delight; three grandsons, Doug Bright and wife Christy of Norman, OK, Tom Bright and wife Leslie of Oklahoma City and Pat Bright and wife Anna Lisa of Edmond, OK; and seven great-grandchildren, Amanda, Zack, Hunter, Trevor, Abby, Devin and Brandon.
Funeral services were planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 7, in the First Baptist Church of Crossett with Bro. David Newberry officiating. Pallbearers were to be Tom Streetman, Jonathan Gates, and Loomis, Doug, Tim and Pat Bright. The Leisure Lodge Big Wheelers were to be honorary pallbearers.
Burial was planned following services at 2 p.m. at the Sweethome Cemetery in Prescott, with arrangements by Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.
Memorials may be made to the Leisure Lodge activity fund, Crossett Scholarship Foundation or for Gideon Bibles.
Mr. L. T. Clark
Mr. L. T. Clark, 75, of Hamburg died Wednesday, November 1, 2000, at the Ashley County Medical Center in Crossett. A native of Fountain Hill and a resident of Hamburg for all of his life, he worked at Big O's Tire and Pennington's Tire in Hamburg for the past 12 years. He was a member of the Gardner Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher. He was an U. S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, William & Carrie Moore Clark; a brother, Max Clark; and an infant daughter, Shirley Jean Clark.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann Campbell Clark of Hamburg; three sons; Johnny, Tommy and Bobby Clark, all of Hamburg; two daughters, Linda Day and Betty Beaver of Fort Worth, TX; two stepsons, Bucky Carpenter of Hamburg and Robert Carpenter of Downsville, LA; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Saturday, November 4, in the Gardner Baptist Church with Revs. Charles Pullin and Lane Amos officiating. . Pallbearers were Allen Waldrup, Oscar Clark, Steven Hodge, Russell Maxwell, George Norman Swan and Alan Swan. Honorary pallbearers were Mike Harville, Hob Moffatt, Fred Mausehardt, Howard Foster, Royce Bowden, Bobby Ferguson, Earl McCrory, W. M. Wigley, Charles White, James Tassey, Tommy Sivils, Jack Turner, Edward Akin, Jim Bailey, Tommy Morgan and Dennis Byrd. . Interment followed services at the Eden Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg. Memorials may be made to the Gardner Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 506, Hamburg, AR 71646.
