Willie Shaw
Willie Shaw, 88, of Hamburg died Wednesday, November 1, 2000, at the Beverly Heath Care Center in Crossett. A life-long resident of Hamburg, he was a retired member worker and a member of the Phillip Grove Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Isabel Maggie Griffith Shaw; his parents, Winston and Mattie Jones Shaw; and five sisters.
Survivors include a son, Abraham Shaw of Crossett; three daughters, Sarah Jacob and Janice Lambert of Hamburg and Willie Jean Brown of Crossett; 13 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 19 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 5, in the Phillip Grove Baptist Church with Rev. W. R. Taylor officiating. Pallbearers were Levell, Ray, and Glenn Stanley, Curtis Howard, Larry Tippie and Billy Ray Robinson. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Shaw Hunting Club.
Burial followed services at the Phillip Grove Cemetery, directed by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
Mae Avery
Mae Avery, 78, of Crossett, died Wednesday, October 25, 2000, at the North Monroe Hospital. Born September 18, 1922, to Willie Sam and Claudia Octavia Caldwell Free, she was a homemaker and a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Avery.
Survivors include one son, Lester Avery and his wife Beth of Crossett; one daughter, Janice Stratton and her husband Donnie of Crossett; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 28, at Mount Olive Baptist Church with the Revs. Randy Maxwell and Don Ward officiating. Pallbearers were Dan Kersey, Richard Edwards, Billy Ray Free, Dick Avery, Bryan Bays, Johnny Free and Tommy Free. Burial followed at Lakewood Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.
Leavy Rice Barnett
Leavy Rice Barnett, 89, of Crossett died Saturday, October 28, 2000, at the Morehouse General Hospital in Bastrop, LA. Born January 25, 1911, she was a homemaker and a member of the Holly Ridge Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Toby Barnett.
Survivors include three sons, Leroy Barnett of Bonita, LA, Gene Barnett of Jones, LA, and Joe Barnett of Crossett; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 3 p.m. Monday, October 30, in the chapel of Jones Funeral Home of Crossett with Revs. Roy Craig and Donald Bryant officiating. Pallbearers were Wayne Hatfield, Robert Riles, Henry Sowers, Ed Hartness, Charlie Smith and Jimmy Krenshaw. Burial followed services at the Simms Cemetery.
James Edward "Monk" Birdner
James Edward "Monk" Birdner was born in Mer Rouge, LA, on July 14, 1941, to Ms. Bernice DeBose Birdner and the late William Birder. After living there, he moved to Bastrop, LA, and graduated from Morehouse High School. He later moved to Crossett and marriage Sandra Releford, and they had three children. Employed at the Georgia-Pacific paper mill until his death, he was converted, baptized and united with the First Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. I. J. Jordan in Mer Rouge.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Bernice DeBose Birdner of Bastrop; three daughters, Felisa "Lisa" Smith and husband Dennis of Lynwood, CA, Constance Brown and husband Geryle of Crossett and Cynthia Austin and husband Clarence of Bastrop; three sons, Erin Rex Robinson and wife Gail of Panorama City, CA, Ray Anthony Birdner and James "JJ" Webb of Crossett; three sisters, Anna Lucas and husband Joseph of Detroit, MI, Irene Lanier and Ruthie DeBose of Bastrop; two brothers, Michael DeBose and wife Gwendolyn of Baton Rouge, LA, and Ervin DeBose of Bastrop; 18 grandchildren, two god children, many other relatives, and a special friend, Dorothy Smith of Crossett.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 26, in the Gates Chapel A. M. E. Church with Revs. T. A. Broomfield and E. G. Colquitt officiating. Pallbearers were Roland Dale Hester, Clezell Brown, Leonard Webb, Ray Charles Martini, Tim Hawkins, Willie Green, Monroe Christian, Lazarus Adams, Anthony Dawkins, Glen Ellis, Nakia Hawkins, Keith Martin, Ralph Reese, and James Adams. Honorary pallbearers were Erin Rex Robinson, Ray Anthony Birdner, James Webb, Ervin DeBose, Michael DeBose, Edward Lanier, Keith Wilson, Robert Baldwin, Geryle Brown, Jr., Spencer Brown, Antwain Birdner and Tararus Hunter.
Burial followed services at the Westview Cemetery, directed by Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.
