Mr. Doyle Wayne Lea
Mr. Doyle Wayne Lea, 55, of Crossett, died Sunday, January 28, 2001, at the Ashley County Medical Center in Crossett. Mr. Lea was a native of Manning, a resident of Crossett for the past 10 years and a former resident of Hamburg. He worked as a lab technician for Georgia Pacific Paper Division and had worked for Georgia Pacific for the past 33 years. He was a retired Army Reservist and a member of the First Baptist Church of Crossett where he served as a deacon. He was preceded in death by his father, Doyle Lea.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Miller Lea of Crossett, two daughters, Angi Lewis and husband Steve of Crossett and Michelle Farmer and husband Brad of Whitehall; his mother, Daphne Reynolds Wood of Arkadelphia; a brother, Bo Lea of Hot Springs; a sister, Fonda Ayers of Little Rock; and two grandchildren, Carter and Madeline Lewis.
Funeral services were planned for 11 a.m., Tuesday, January 30, in the First Baptist Church in Crossett with Dr. Bobby Pennington, Dr. Tommy Cunningham and Rev. Charles Christie officiating. Pallbearers were to be are Pete Hollis, Dan Kersey, Freddie Martin, Jess McCrory, Bob Rush, Robert Stone, Jim Yarbrough and Pat Allison. Honorary pallbearers were to be Jimmie Lewis and Keith Carter. Interment was to follow services at the Flat Creek Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Lottie Moon Fund, 701 Main Street, Crossett, AR 71635.
Lora Matheny Maxwell
Lora Matheny Maxwell, 84, of Crossett died Sunday, January 28, 2001. Born February 4, 1916, at Dry Bayou to Bishop and Effie Simmons Matheny, she was the middle child, with two brothers and two sisters who all preceded her in death. A graduate of Parkdale High School, she marriage George Hilliard Maxwell on Christmas Day, 1934. In her early years, she managed a chain of dairy cafes, and due to her husband's occupation, they moved frequently. A homemaker, she set up 45 different residences for the family during her life. After moving to Crossett, she established and was the former owner of Maxwell Cleaners. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Crossett where she was active in the United Methodist Women. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1988.
Survivors include two sons, Rev. George Larry Maxwell of Leesville, LA, and Richard Lee Maxwell of Crossett; two grandchildren, George Larry Maxwell, Jr., and Amanda Leigh Maxwell; and one great-grandchild, Codie Maxwell; two step-grandchildren, Linda Perrin and Judy Ames; a step-great-grandchild, Jennifer Barnes; and a step-great-great-grandchild, Dalel Harrison.
Funeral services were planned for 3 p.m. Tuesday, January 30, in the First United Methodist Church with Bill Williams officiating. Burial was to follow services at Pinewood Memorial Park under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.
Percy Payton
Percy Payton, 87, of Wilmot died Saturday, January 27, 2001, at the Beverly Health Care of Wilmot. A native of Eudora and a Wilmot resident for the past 70 years, he was a retired farmer and a member of the Sweet Home Baptist Church where he served on the deacon board for 55 years. He was preceded in death by nephew he raised as a son, Jessie James Stanley.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Louise Lemon Payton; one son, Curtis "Fox" Hillard of Parkdale; one daughter, Shirley Shelton of Wilmot; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, February 2, in the Sweet Home Baptist Church with Rev. W. L. Plummer officiating. Pallbearers will be Elijah Brown, William Jackson, Robert Kitchen, Harold Moore, Calvin Lemon, Jr., and Hubert Shelton. Burial will follow services at the Jim Smith Cemetery, directed by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
Mrs. Eddie Lee Vail
Mrs. Eddie Lee Vail, 75, of El Dorado died Sunday, January 28, 2001, at the Ashley County Medical Center. A native of Rayville, LA, and for many years a resident of Hamburg and Crossett, she had lived in El Dorado for the past five years. A homemaker and member of the Victory Baptist Church in El Dorado, she was preceded in death by her parents, Neil and Anna Lee Langley Vines, three brothers and a sister.
Survivors include her husband, Marvin Vail; a son, Doyle Vail, both of El Dorado; a sister, Estelle Cossey of Parkdale; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were planned for 3 p.m. Tuesday, January 30, in the chapel of Jones Funeral Home in Hamburg with Rev. Mark Staples officiating. Pallbearers were to be Jerry Childs, Hershel Alford, Carlton Vines, David Grice, Bill Vines and J.D. Grice. Burial was to follow services at the Parkdale Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Parkdale Cemetery Association, c/o Mrs. Glenda Wells, P. O. Box 104, Parkdale, AR 71661.
