Estelle Gardner Russell
Estelle Gardner Russell, 91, died December 30, 2000, at the Monte Siesta Retirement Center in Austin, TX. She had lived in Austin since 1993. Born July 26, 1909, in Hamburg to Dudley D. and Maud Duckworth Gardner, she graduated from Hamburg High School in 1928 and attended what was then Arkansas State Teachers College in Conway.
After teaching school briefly in Fountain Hill, she left Hamburg and went to Chicago, IL, where she worked for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Malcolm E. Gardner of Falls Church, VA; and two sisters, Caroline Horan of Tucson, AZ, and Louise Minnick of Brazil.
Survivors include a sister, Mary Imodene Kelly of Shreveport, LA; a brother and sister-in-law, Dudley D. and Carlise Gardner of Buda, TX; three nieces and five nephews. Her ashes will be interred in the Hamburg Cemetery on a date to be determined.
Martha Jane Youngblood
Mrs. Martha Jane Youngblood, 83, of Hamburg, died Wednesday, January 17, 2001, at the Ashley County Medical Center. Mrs. Youngblood was a lifelong resident of Ashley County, a homemaker and a member of Full Gospel Church of God in Christ. She was proceeded in death by a son, Bernice Griffin, and her parents, Columbus and Lee Adams Whiteout.
Survivors include one son, Earnest Jenkins of Hamburg; one sister, Georgia Bell Rindle of Hamburg; seven grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Friday, January 19, at 11:00 a.m. at the Emmanuel Temple Church of God in Christ with the Rev. Jasper Mays officiating. Pallbearers were Jessie James Banks, Lawrence Tippie, Lonnie Walker, James Prewitt, Phillip Mays and Earl Jacob. Interment was in the Norris Hill Cemetery under the direction of Cromwell Funeral Home.
Abbie Snapp Arnold
Abbie Snapp Arnold, 103, was born October 9, 1897, the ninth child in a family of ten to Charles Franklin Snapp and Elizabeth Jane Flinn Snapp of McHue, Independence County, Arkansas, and died January 12, 2001, in Little Rock. She attended elementary school at Jamestown and graduated from Batesville High School in 1916. Her first teaching experience was in 1912 when she was fifteen years old at Blowing Spring where she boarded with a local family. In 1916 and 1917, she lived with her parents and taught the third and fourth grades in Jamestown. She attended State Teacher's College in Conway from 1918 to 1920 when she became principal of the Batesville Elementary School, remaining there until 1926.
She marriage Carl Arnold of Walnut Grove, AL, on September 5, 1923, and they had three children born from 1927 to 1932. When the youngest child began first grade in 1938, she returned to teaching at Desha High School where she taught until 1955.
She attended Lyon College in the summer sessions and received a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1955. She accepted a position as head of the English department of Crossett High School where she taught from 1955 to 1960 when she retired.
Lyon College recognized her contribution to education by giving her the Eta Sigma Outstanding Educator Award in 1980 and the Friend of Education Award in 1990. In Batesville she was an active member of the First Methodist Church, Athena Study Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the Independence County chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Kaufman of Little Rock, eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Arnold; two sons, William J. Arnold and Carl F. Arnold; and one grandson, R. Brent Arnold.
Services were planned for Tuesday, January 16, at 11 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church of Batesville. Burial was to follow services at the Oaklawn Cemetery, with arrangements by Roller-Crouch Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were to be her grandsons, Blair, Guy, and William Arnold, John and Kenneth Kaufman; and a great-grandson, William Arnold. Honorary pallbearers were to be Thomas Dennis, Marcus Halbrook, Charles,. C. R., Pete and James Snapp.
Memorials may be made to the Abbie Snapp Arnold English Award, Lyon College, P.O. Box 2317, Batesville, AR 72503 or to the First United Methodist church, 615 E. Main St., Batesville, AR 72501
William Thomas "W. T." Carter
William Thomas "W. T."Carter, 86, of Crossett died Saturday, January 13, 2001, at the Arkansas Heart Hospital in Little Rock. Born October 10, 1914, to the late Marian Eugene and Daisy Ellen Malloy Carter of Hamburg, he marriage Velma Boney Ingalls in 1940. From this union, two children were born, Mary Ann Carter Castillon of New Orleans, LA, and Carl Eugene Carter of Hamburg. He was a proud American farmer his entire life and a loving and dedicated caretaker for the Pinewood Memorial Park for 40 years.
Survivors include his wife of seven years, Sybil Kincaid Carter of Hamburg; his daughter and son, three grandchildren, Dewayne Carter of Crossett, Mark Castillon of New Orleans and Carla Carter of Crossett; two great-grandchildren, Arron and Kaitlyn Carter of Crossett; five stepchildren and many step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 16, in the Jones Funeral Home chapel in Crossett with Bros. Edward Nelson and Stan Keely officiating. Burial was to follow services at Pinewood Memorial Park.
