Miss Martha Ann Pugh
Miss Martha Ann Pugh, 42, of Portland died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at the George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC. Miss Pugh was a native of Portland. She was a graduate of Chatham Hall School in Chatham, VA. She also graduated from the University of the South in Swanee, TN. She was a resident of Washington, D.C. for the past 20 years and the former office manager for Senator David Pryor. She was a member of the Portland United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her parents, Robert Dean & Jo Ann Ederington Pugh of Portland; two sisters, Mary Pugh Manning of Bentonville and Virginia Pugh Hernandez of Madrid, Spain; two nieces, Ana Louise Hernandez and Mary Catherine Manning; and two nephews, Juan Wilson Hernandez and Van Jesse Manning.
The family will be at home in Portland. Funeral services are at 2 p.m., Wednesday, June 20, in the Portland United Methodist Church with Rev. Joel W. Pugh, II officiating. Pallbearers were to be Joel Newcome, Leyden Pugh, John Newcome, Craig Shackelford, Eddie Scherm, and Jerry Sadler. Interment was to follow services at the Hamburg Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg.
Memorials may be made to the Martha Ann Pugh Memorial Fund for Juvenile Diabetes, c/o The Arkansas Children's Hospital Foundation, PO Box 2222, Little Rock, AR 72203.
Carl Levett Sanford
Carl Levett Sanford, 47, of Crossett died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at the Ashley County Medical Center. A native of Ashley County, he was a member of the Gates Chapel A. M. E. Church and a 1972 graduate of Crossett High School.
Survivors include his parents, Rev. Nolan and Alma Watson of Crossett; a brother, Chanslor Watson of Crossett; and two sisters, Gwendolyn Harris of Crossett and Julie Hatter of Lakewood, CA.
Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 14, in the Gates Chapel A. M. E. Church with Revs. Nolan Watson and Tyrone Broomfield officiating. Pallbearers were Joel Ford, Curtis Boston, Jr., Larry Moore, Perry Johnson, Gordon Kidd and Robert Gilbert. Honorary pallbearers were Chanslor Watson, Aaron Harris III, Tony Tatum, Maurice Williams, Bernard Martin and Jason Belser.
Burial followed services at the Westview Cemetery, directed by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
Mr. William Van Carpenter
Mr. William Van Carpenter, 80, of Monroe, LA, died Monday, June 4, 2001. at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Little Rock. A native of Hamburg and a resident of Monroe for the past 24 years, he graduated from St. Louis University with a degree in commerce & finance. He was an U. S. Navy veteran of World War II, stationed on the USS Yorktown as a gunner's mate. He owned and operated Carpenter's Clothing Store in Hamburg for many years. He was a former president of the Hamburg Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Hamburg Rotary Club and the Hamburg PTA and a former member of the Hamburg City Council and the Democrat Central Committee of Ashley County. He trained with the Arkansas Enterprises for the Blind, now known as the Lions World Services for the Blind and was a representative spokesman for them across Arkansas. He was a member of the Parkview Baptist Church in Monroe where he was an outreach leader. He was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Hamburg where he was a youth Sunday School teacher for many years.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sara Carpenter in 1962; his parents, George Albert & Talnethus Irene Herrod Carpenter; two brothers, Arnold & Rev. Raymond Carpenter; and three sisters, Frances Locke, Alleen Rothchild and Zell Sullivan.
He is survived by two sons, David Carpenter and wife Marilyn of Ladelle and Steve Carpenter of Monroe; a daughter, Claire McCants and husband Art of Greenwood; a sister, Dell Carpenter Hedley of Lansing, MI; four grandsons, Shane & Marcus Carpenter and Will & John David McCants; and one great-grandson, Ryan Carpenter.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 7, in the First Baptist Church of Hamburg with Dr. Lee McGlone & Rev. Klois Hargis officiating. Pallbearers were Glen & Billy Ray Carpenter, Butch Locke, Rudy Bischof, Jack Carpenter, Sr. and Sonny Smith. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Parkview Baptist Church Senior Men's Sunday School Classes. Interment followed services at the Hamburg Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg. Memorials may be made to the Lions World Services for the Blind, 2811 Fairpark Blvd., Little Rock, AR 72204.
MARCIE CARPENTER
Marcie Carpenter, 87, of Hamburg, died March 23, 2014 at her residence.
Funeral services were March 25 at Jones-Hartshorn Funeral Home, with burial in Hamburg Cemtery. The Revs. Eugene Howie and Keith Martin officiated.
She was a homemaker and a member of Gardner Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Raymond Carpenter; two sons, Rev. Bill Carpenter and Richard Carpenter; her parents, Floyd and Odell White Sivils; a brother, Gwain Sivils and a sister, Janie Hobbs.
She is survived by a son, Glenn Allen Carpenter of Hamburg; a brother, John Sivils of Kettering, England; four grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren and other relatives.
Pallbearers were Kenny Carpenter, Jay Griffith, Joe Sivils, Bobby Griffin, Levi Gray and Sam Hobbs.
Memorials may be made to Gardner Baptist Church, PO Box 311, Hamburg, AR 71646.
Jones-Hartshorn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
