Clevester Barnes
Mr. Clevester Barnes, 59, of Hamburg, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at his home. Mr. Barnes was a native of Parkdale, but a resident of Hamburg the past 41 years. He was an employee of Akers Cleaners for 40 years and a member of Liberty Mission Church of God in Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife, Savannah Barnes; his parents, Jeffroe and Corean Dismuke Barnes; three brothers, Houston, Claude and R.B. Barnes; and one sister, Louise Robinson.
He is survived by two sons, David Dennis and Herman Madison, both of Hamburg; one daughter, Evelyn Barnes Taylor of North Little Rock; one brother, Ezell Barnes of Salem, NJ; one sister, Gerelean Smith of Bridgeton, NJ; and 22 grandchildren.
Funeral services were Saturday, April 21, at 3:00 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Supt. Jasper Mays officiating. Pallbearers were Cleveland Wilson, Larry Works, James Prewitt, Jack Hill, Earl Jacob and Carl James Cox. Honorary pallbearers were Jessie Banks, Lawrence Tippie, Willie Ashford and Willie Jackson. Interment was in the Phillip Grove cemetery under the direction of Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
Inelma Fike Freeman
Mrs. Inelma Brown Fike Freeman, 81, of Crossett died Sunday, April 15, 2001. The sixth child of Dock and Fannie Easter Brown, her parents and five siblings preceded her in death. She accepted Jesus Christ and was baptized by Rev. Hue Gooden, pastor of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church of Strong. In 1943, she united with New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. J.H. Allen. Sis Freeman remained a faithful member of New Bethel until her death, and she served on the senior usher board for several years. Before moving to Crossett, Inelma marriage Lewis Fike of Strong and bore one son, who preceded her in death at nine months of age.
She graduated from T.W. Daniels High School after successfully completing night courses. In August, 1950, she received a certificate for successfully completing course work as a practical nurse. She received certificates of appreciation from the Ombudsman Club, Order of Eastern Star #306 and Ashley County Extension agency. She was employed by Ashley Memorial Hospital, Rose Inn Hotel and Area Agency Home Health. She was a member of Silver Star Chapter #306 Order of the Eastern Stars for more than 50 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Jonnie Faye Jones and Erma Jean Swanson, both of Gary, Indiana; two grandsons, Willie Harlod Freeman and Michael Edgar; one granddaughter, Pam Robinson; five great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, April 20, at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. B.J. Jackson officiating. Pallbearers were the deacons of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, with members of Eastern Star #306 serving as honorary pallbearers. Burial was at the Westview Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.
Melissa Inez Hooks
Mrs. Melissa Inez Hooks, 94, of Crossett, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at North Monroe Medical Center. Born March 25, 1907, to Joseph Lafayette and Roena Trim Peacock, Mrs. Hooks was a member of the First Baptist Church of Crossett. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester Louis Hooks; four brothers, Carl, George, Floyd and J.L. Peacock; and three sisters, Clara Ladd, Ruth Ladd, and Bessie Peacock.
Survivors include one son, Tommy Hooks of Crossett; one daughter, Shirley Mobley and her husband John; one grandson, John David Mobley; one granddaughter, Melissa Ann Mobley, all of Sikeston, MO; and one sister, Christine Peacock of Crossett.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 23, at the First Baptist Church of Crossett with Dr. David Newberry officiating. Interment followed at the Pinewood Memorial Park. Pallbearers were Wayne Moffatt, Joe Cantley, Doogie Darling, Paul McDougald, Roger Nutt, D.C. Pierce, Jack Allen, and Bob Bridges. Services were under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.
Rev. Larry Eugene Johnson
Rev. Larry Eugene Johnson, 75, of Crossett, died Monday, April 16, 2001, at the Arkansas Heart Hospital in Little Rock. A native of Coldwater, Mississippi; a resident of Crossett for many years and a former resident of Hamburg and Strathmore, CA, he was ordained by the General Council of the Assemblies of God in Springfield, MO. He pastored for over 50 years with his churches including the Cloverdale Assembly of God Church in Crossett for 15 years, First Assembly of God Church in Hamburg for eight years, Strathmore Assembly of God Church in Strathmore, CA, Buttonwillow Assembly of God Church in Buttonwillow, CA, Maricopa Church of God in Maricopa, CA and several others. He started and finished his ministry at the Cloverdale Assembly of God. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Jesse Johnson; a sister, Goldie Stockton; and two grandchildren, Rick Rick Johnson and Tressie Crouch.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Elaine Anders Johnson of Crossett; three sons, Danny Johnson and wife Helen; Wayne Johnson and wife Cathy; and Roger Johnson and wife Marie, all of Crossett; two daughters, Judy Crouch and husband Ed of Hamburg and Diane Riordan and husband Norman of Crossett; 25 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and a host of friends.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 18, in the Cloverdale Assembly of God Church with Revs. J. W. Bobo, Jackie Kinard and Bro. Johnson's son-in-law, Rev. Norman Riorden officiating. Pallbearers were Dale Bolin, Charles Berryman, Keith Curran, James Hamilton, Bob Pell, Jr. and Kenneth Knight. Honorary pallbearers were the ministers of the Arkansas District of the Assemblies of God. Interment followed services at the Crossroads Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg. Memorials may be made to the Cloverdale Assembly of God Church, 376 Ashley Road 15, Crossett, AR 71635.
