Preston Simmons
Preston Simmons, 87, of Scott, formerly of Dermott, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001. He was born January 22, 1914, in Coatopa, AL.
Survivors are his wife of 66 years, Callie Wiliford Simmons of Scott; six sons, Henry Simmons of Detroit, Mich., Joe Louis and wife Pearlie Simmons of Grenada, MS, William "Willie" Simmons, of Crossett, Douglas and wife Ferry Simmons of Little Rock, Alvin Simmons of Scott, and Bobby and wife Linda Simmons of Atlanta, GA; five daughters, Joella and husband Elmer Johnson, and Effie and husband Robert Danzy of Crossett, Ida and husband Roosevelt Rogers of Little Rock, Lecester and husband George Brown of Coatopa, Ala., Evelyn and husband Sie Moore of Scott; one brother, Burt and wife Hannah Simmons of Dermott, Ark.; two sisters, Carrie Carter of Coatopa, Ala., and Juanitha and husband Warren Pearson of Phoenix, Ariz., 60 grandchildren and host of great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14, 2001, at Greater Second Baptist Church, 5800 Geyer Springs, Little Rock. Visitation will be from 6-7 p.m. Friday at Ruffin & Jarrett Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rest-in-Peace.

Larlue Smith-Stokes
Larlue Smith-Stokes, 85, of Wilmot died Monday, April 2, 2001, at the St. Vincent's Medical Center in Little Rock. A lifelong resident of Wilmot, she was a retired cook for Place Nursing Home. A member of the John Wesley A. M. E. Zion Church, she was an usher at the church for over 50 years, currently serving as president, and she was a member of Class #2. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Stokes, Sr.; her son, Arthur Stokes, Jr.; her parents, Ed and Vessie Young Smith; two sisters, Lucy Dale Smith-Tolston and Arizona Smith; and a brother, James Lasker.
Survivors include five sons, Cloman and wife Della Stokes and Levert and wife Connie Stokes of Wilmot, Sterling and wife Sandra Stokes of Inglewood, CA, Willie Stokes of Fontana, CA, and Lee Stokes of Sherman Oaks, CA: a daughter, Vessie and husband Leroy Harris of Wilmot; a favorite cousin, Henry Parker of Wilmot; 18 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 7, in the John Wesley A. M. E. Zion Church with Rev. James A. Vault officiating. Pallbearers were Calvin Brown, Curtis Hillard, William Jackson, Cleveland Parker, Charles Raino and DeWayne Watts. Honorary pallbearers were sons and grandsons. Burial followed services at the Second Baptist Cemetery, directed by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.

Karlida Kenyotta Thornton
Karlida Kenyotta Thornton, 29, of Crossett died Sunday, April 1, 2001, at the Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff. A native of Los Angeles, CA, and a Crossett resident for the past 20 years, she was employed at Brookshire's and was a member of the New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. A 1989 graduate of Crossett High School, she was preceded in death by her mother, Darlene Smith.
Survivors include her husband, Jimmy Thornton; two sons, Demarcus Bridges and Devin Adams of Crossett; her father, Woodrow Wilson Dent of Los Angeles, CA: and three sisters, Shante Morris of Crossett, Kenyatta Dent of San Bernardino, CA, and Cynthia Dent of Hawaii.
Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Friday, April 6, in the New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. B. J. Jackson officiating. Pallbearers were Gerald Brown, Vaughn Smith, Bobby McDaniel, Gordon Kidd, Cannon Foster, Curtis Boston, Jr., Johnny Mack Brown and Ronnie Smith. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Crossett High Class of 1989.
Burial followed services at the Westview Cemetery, directed by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.

Opal Perry Barner
Opal Perry Barner, 76, of Crossett died Monday, March 26, 2001, at her home. Born August 27, 1924, in Atlanta, AR, to Hershel N. and Addie Carson Perry, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Crossett where she was active in the Willie Spivey Sunday School Class. Before moving to Crossett, she taught and was involved in several businesses with her husband, the late Roland Ashley "Ash" Barner. When they moved to Crossett, she and her husband operated Barner and Sons Trucking Company and the Wagon Wheel Caf‚. She enjoyed flower gardening and was an avid sports fan, especially following the Atlanta Braves.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Patsy Ruth and Jody Haney of Crossett; a granddaughter, Erin Elizabeth Haney of Crossett; and three sisters, Pauline Porter of Edgemont, and Clara Vansickle and Mary Cheatham of Victoria, TX.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, in the First United Methodist Church of Crossett with Rev. Bill Williams officiating. Pallbearers were Bob Rush, Bob Biggers, James Herbert Burchfield, Jim Brooks, Ben Johnson and Johnny Craig.
Burial followed services at Pinewood Memorial Park, directed by Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.
