May 29, 1937, in Crossett to Ocie and Lillie Roberts, he was a graduate of the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville and a retired management associate of J. C. Penney Company with 33 years of service in seven states. A member of the First Baptist Church of Crossett, he was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include his wife, Patsy Harrison Roberts of Crossett; one brother, Bob Roberts and wife Karlynn of Pine Bluff; one sister, Linda Land and husband Larry of Crossett; his mother, Lillie Roberts of Crossett; two nieces and one nephew.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, September 7, in the First Baptist Church of Crossett with Dr. David Newberry officiating. Pallbearers were Bobby Brooks, Bill Holder, Billy Howie, Denon Cagle and Wesley Maxwell. Honorary pallbearers were Ivan Smith, Jimmy Grubbs, Pat Cook, Dick Williams, J. C. McGoogan and Bruce Deless.
Burial followed services at Pinewood Memorial Park, directed by Jones Funeral Home of Crossett. Memorials may be made to the Crossett Community Scholarship Association.
Mrs. Nora Murphy Swan
Mrs. Nora Murphy Swan, 91, of Hamburg died Monday, September 3, 2001 at her residence. Mrs. Swan was a native of Hamburg and a resident of the Pine Hill Community outside of Hamburg all of her life. She was a homemaker, a member of the Egypt Missionary Baptist Church and a member of the Spring Hill EHC Club for over 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Winford Franklin Swan, in 1967; her father, Hugh Murphy; her mother and step-father, Mattie Dailey Murphy Livingston and Wesley Livingston; and three brothers, Hugh Murphy, Frank Edward "Gip" Livingston and George Dailey.
She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Bowles Woods and Willa "Stumpy" Ray of Hamburg; five grandchildren, Philip & Neal Bowles, Patricia Lockridge, Joe Britt Ray and Cindi Whitaker; 16 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m., Wednesday, September 5, in the chapel of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg with Revs. Ferrell Breshears and Dale Crumby officiating. Pallbearers were Willie Earl, Ed, Billy, Jerry & Doyle Murphy, Ronnie & Terry Livingston, Allen, Bruce & Norman Swan. Honorary pallbearers were Harold Murphy, Junior Jordan, Danny Sweeney, Ollie Austin, Eugene Morris, Drew Shields, Jarrod Bowen and Morris Pennington. Interment followed servicese at the Crossroads Cemetery.
Lillie Mae Tweedy
Lillie Mae Tweedy, 94, of Hamburg died Friday, September 7, 2001, at the Summit Hospital in West Monroe, LA. A native of Ashley County, she was a homemaker, the oldest member of the First Baptist Church of Hamburg and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilfred Harold Tweedy; and two sons, Ray Wilfred Tweedy and Robert Tweedy.
Survivors include one son, Don Louie Tweedy of Bellevue, Nebraska; one daughter, Bernice Williams of Cypress, CA; one sister, Reba Shell of Huntsville, AL; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Monday, September 10, in the chapel of Cromwell Funeral Home with Rev. Klois Hargis officiating. Pallbearers were Noel McGilton, Jim Goodwin, Ben Huckaby, Jack Shell, Brett Shell and Bill Wise. Honorary pallbearers were Freeman Shell, Jr., Mike Shell, Frank Taylor and Ed Shell. Burial followed services at the Hamburg Cemetery.
George Washington "G. W." Ward
George Washington "G. W." Ward, 88, of Crossett died Friday, September 7, 2001, at the Ashley County Medical Center. A native of Union County and a Crossett resident for the past 57 years, he was retired from the Georgia-Pacific chemical plant and was a veteran of World War II. A member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Ward; his second wife, Alice Davis Ward; one son and three brothers.
Survivors include one son, Larry Ward of Malvern; four daughters, Lee Ester Howard and Mardell Cox of Hamburg and Mary Etta Bowens and Alberta Wilford of Gary, IN; one sister, Patience Lewis of Texarkana, TX; 47 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are planned for 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 12, in the Mount Zion Baptist Church with Rev. W. R. Taylor officiating. Pallbearers were to be Cal Tucker, Lawrence Tippie, Robert Hall, Thurman Bradley, Willis Bowens and R. D. Morgan.
Burial was to follow services at the Johnson Memorial Cemetery, directed by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
