Mrs. Lorene Church
Mrs. Lorene Church, 85, of Hamburg died Sunday, August 19, 2001. at the Ashley County Medical Center in Crossett. Mrs. Church was a native of Blytheville, a resident of the Eden community northwest of Hamburg for the past 30 years and a former resident of Benton Harbor, MI. A homemaker and member of the Eden Baptist Church, she was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert Church, in 1997; her parents, Wes & Maudie Mapps Byers; three sisters, Bertie Powell, Bertha West and Ruby Church. and a brother Clarence Byers.
She is survived by two sons, William (Billy) Church of Tomball, TX, and Rick Church of Hamburg; two daughters, Joyce Height of Glendora, MI, and Sue Warren of Marshall, TX; a brother, Jay Byers of Symar, CA; a sister, Gladys Stephenson of Hamburg; 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Grave-side funeral services and interment were at 10 a.m., Monday, August 20, in the Eden Cemetery with Rev. Mike Titsworth officiating. Honorary pallbearers were Danny, Ernie & Jim Stephenson, Skip Davey & Ken Byers. Funeral services were under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg. Memorials may be made to the Eden Baptist Church, 3748 Hwy 133 N., Hamburg, AR 71646.
Mr. Rutledge F. Ford
Mr. Rutledge F. Ford, 74, of Saltillo, MS, died Friday, August 17, 2001, at the Dogwood Plantation Nursing Home in Saltillo. Mr. Ford was a native of Crossett; a resident of Saltillo, MS since 1985 and a former resident of Jonesboro, Leachville & Pine Bluff. He graduated from Hamburg High School in 1944, and he graduated from the University of Arkansas with a master's degree. A World War II Pacific Theater veteran of the US Army, he was an agronomist and worked with cotton, soybean and rice producers in northeast Arkansas for almost thirty years, having a long and distinguished career with the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service before retiring in 1985. After he retired, he established and maintained a crop consulting business in the Mississippi valley region until 1999. He was a Methodist; a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Hamburg Masonic Lodge having received his 50 year pin and a member of the Eastern Star. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred & Paulene Dunn Ford.
He is survived by his wife, Alma Orr Ford; a son, Jonathan Jeffery Ford, both of Saltillo; a daughter, Rebecca Suzanne Ford of Phoenix, AZ; a brother, Gordon Ford of Sulphur Springs, TX; a sister, Martha Holland of Dallas, TX and two grandchildren, Taylor & Brittany Ford.
Grave-side services with Masonic honors are planned for 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 22, at the Judson Cemetery with Gordon Ford officiating. Funeral services are under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg. Memorials may be made to the Judson Missionary Baptist Church, c/o Mr. Dennis Cox, 2512 Hwy 425 N, Hamburg, AR 71646.
Maxine Elnora Girtman
Maxine Elnora Girtman, 83, of Crossett died Saturday, August 18, 2001, at her residence in the White Station community. A homemaker and member of the Mount Zion Crossett Camp Baptist Church, she was a board member of the Singing Union #3, secretary for her church, and a former foster grandparent. She was preceded in death by a son and three daughters, her parents, James Burks and Ruth Edna Bridges, and two brothers.
Survivors include two sons, James Girtman of Oakland, CA, and Nathaniel Girtman of Crossett; two stepsons, Preston Girtman of Oakland, CA, and Willie L. Girtman of New York, NY; five daughters, Rosa Lincoln, Joyce Thornton, Carolyn Davis, Juanita Gibbs and Melba Wright, all of Crossett; a stepdaughter, Helen Tucker of Crossett; one sister, Doris Henderson of Fordyce; 42 grandchildren, 84 great-grandchildren, and 20 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, August 22, in the New Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Baker officiating. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Burial will follow services at the Nimmons Cemetery, directed by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
Charles Ely Grant
Charles Ely Grant, 80, of Crossett died Saturday, August 13, 2001, at the Ashley County Medical Center. Born March 3, 1921, to Herod and Lou Ella Ely, he served in Patton's Third Army, Fifth Infantry Division, the Red Devils. He was preceded in death by two stepsons, Oscar Benitez and Jesus Benitiz.
Survivors include his wife, Juventina Ely of Crossett; two sons, Charles "Buddy" Grant Ely, Jr., of Crossett and Chuck Lund of El Paso, TX; three stepdaughters, Rosa Wallace of Crossett, and Doris Contreras and Irma Lee of Van Nuys, CA; three brothers, Bill Hale of Dallas, TX; Monty Hale of Tecula Lake, CA, and Robert "Bob" Ely of Canoga Park, CA; and 13 grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 15, in the Jones Funeral Home chapel in Crossett with Rev. Ray Mills officiating. Pallbearers were Preston Malloy, Frank Thacker, A. D. Witherington, Johnny Pierce, Clayton Mills, Ray Lochala and Stormy Braswell. Burial followed services at the Antioch Cemetery.
