James William Pennington
James William Pennington, 73, of Benton, formerly of Crossett, died Friday, August 17, 2001, at the Saline Memorial Hospital in Benton. Born March 27, 1928, to Roy James and Hattie Mae Steelman Pennington in Holly Springs, he was an Air Force veteran, was retired from International Paper Company in Pine Bluff and was a member of the Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Benton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Laverne Pennington.
Survivors include three sons, James Downey Pennington of Sheridan, Michael Pennington of Fayetteville and Billy Pennington of Little Rock; one daughter, Lynette Gracie of Fayetteville; two sisters, Winnie McCann of Benton and Neva Thomas of Crossett; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Grave-side services were at 11 a.m. Monday, August 20, at the Hickory Grove Cemetery with Bro. Paul Payne officiating. Arrangements were by Jones Funeral Home of Crossett.
Eula Mae Robinson
Eula Mae Robinson, 72, of Crossett died Friday, August 17, 2001, at the Medical Center of South Arkansas. A lifelong resident of Crossett, she was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Robinson, Sr., her parents, Mitchell and Izora Childress Green; and three brothers, Michael C., Willie Lee and Willie Jr. "Pony" Green.
Survivors include five sons, Leon Robinson, Jr., Carl Edward and Ricky Todd Robinson of Crossett, Terry Charles Robinson of Los Angeles, CA, and Darryl Raye Robinson of Sacramento, CA; four daughters, Angelia Tucker of Crossett, Hazel Robinson of Los Angeles, CA, and Sheila Williams and Ramona Robinson of Berkeley, CA; one brother, Grady Dawson of Grand Rapids, MI; two sisters, Ruby Phifer and Mary Cason of Crossett; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were scheduled for Thursday, August 24, at 1 p.m. in the Fudge Baptist Church with Rev. Jessie Radford, Sr., officiating. Burial will follow services at the Westview Cemetery, directed by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
Rev. Travis V. Simpson
Rev. Travis V. Simpson, 84, of Crossett died Tuesday, August 14, 2001, at the Ashley County Medical Center. A lifelong resident of Crossett, he was retired from the Crossett sawmill and was a member of the Quinn Chapel A. M. E. Church. Rev. Simpson served as pastor for 55 years in 16 churches including Gates Chapel, Green Grove in Portland, St. Peter's in Lake Village, Mount Pleasant in Monticello and St. James in Warren. He acted as secretary of the South Arkansas Conference for over 40 years and was chairman of the Southeast Arkansas Community Action Agency. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Travestine Simpson; his parents, Rafe and Ardella Warren Simpson; and seven brothers.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Georgia Simpson; one son, Raymond Simpson of Grady; one daughter, Emma Hornton of Houston, TX; one brother, George Simpson of Oakland, CA; two sisters, Margie Luster and Alverna Thomas of Oakland, CA; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 18, in the Gates Chapel A. M. E. Church with Presiding Elder J. R. Hooper officiating. Pallbearers were Revs. Nolan Watson, Ken Broughtan, Jessie Washington, Gwain Hammock, Charles Lovett and Bro. Larry Strong. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Duckworth, Sr., Leandrus Simpson, Rev. Danny Franklin, Billy Simpson and other A. M. E. ministers.
Burial followed services at the Quinn Cemetery, directed by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
Mrs. Fannie Lagrone Black
Mrs. Fannie Lagrone Black, 97, of the Jennie community near Lake Village died Saturday, August 11, 2001, at her home. Born February 6, 1904, at Long Prairie in Ashley County, she was a daughter of the late Henry Bunyon Lagrone and Della Scott Lagrone. She was the widow of Harvey Gurtman Black, a homemaker and a member of the Jennie Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, David Zeke Black and Harvey G. Black of Lake Village; two daughters, Lois Adamson of Edmond, OK, and Patsy Black of Lake Village; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Monday, August 13, in the Jennie Baptist Church with Rev. Marvin Fuller officiating. Burial followed services at the Lake Village Cemetery, directed by Bishop Funeral Home.
