John Larrison
John Larrison was born in Wilmot on Nov. 18, 1918, and died July 27, 2001, in Costa Mesa, CA. He graduated from the University of Arkansas with a degree in mechanical engineering in 1939 and was inducted into the Arkansas Academy of Mechanical Engineers in 1989. He was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity.
While working for General Electric Co. in New York, he was involved in the infancy of the semiconductor industry. He later moved to Hughes Aircraft in California to develop the first machine to mass produce semiconductors. John Larrison joined Orthodyne Electronics in 1972, where he designed a bonding machine which simultaneously bonds numerous microscopic wires. This equipment is used in the manufacture of automobiles throughout all of Europe and the United States. It is also used extensively in the communication industry.
Larrison was the holder of six patents. He was an avid golfer and dedicated church worker.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl; two children and their families, Mary Jane and Daniel Sola of Costa Mesa, CA, and John and Kay Larrison of Huntsville, Utah. He has three grandchildren, Lauren Sola of Costa Mesa and Darcy and Matt Larrison of Huntsville, Utah. He is also survived by his brother, Clifford Larrison of Wilmot and Greenville, Miss. He was preceded in death by his parents, C.E. and Jimmie Curtis Larrison of Wilmot and his sister, Mary Henry of California. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Jefferson Austin Maddox
Jefferson Austin Maddox, an active member of the Gilroy Church of Christ and founder of the Hollister, California, congregation, died July 25' 2001, in Bastrop, Louisiana. He was 85.
Mr. Maddox was born in Arkansas, served as a second lieutenant in the 77th Infantry Division of the Army During WWII, then settled near Santa Cruz, California, to work with the Soil Conservation Service. In 1955 he moved to Hollister, where he lived until 1992 when he marriage Mary Louise Johnson and moved to Crossett. He retired in the early 1970's after having worked in USDA Soil Conservation offices in San Benito, Santa Clara, Monterey and Santa Cruz counties in California.
Mr. Maddox was preceded in death by his three wives: Florence Margaret Neil Maddox, Elizabeth Bette Long Hardison Maddox, and Mary Louise Reid Johnson Maddox.
Survivors include children Bruce Austin Maddox of South San Francisco, California, and Eugene Denis Maddox of Maryland.
The funeral was August 7 at Grunnagle Ament Nelson Funeral Home, Hollister, California, followed by interment at the IOOF Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of the American Diabetes Association.
Addie Kelley McArthur
Addie Kelley McArthur, 95, of Crossett died Friday, August 10, 2001, at the Ashley County Medical Center. Born on December 17, 1905, in the Promise Land community to J. J. and Nannie Higginbotham Kelley, she joined the Promise Land Missionary Baptist Church in August, 1916, and was baptized in Berry Lake by Rev. T. G. Morgan. A homemaker and member of the Mount Olive Baptist Church, she was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, one sister, and her husband, John Ellis McArthur.
Survivors include two sons, John E. McArthur, Jr., of Fresno, CA, and Walter McArthur of Hamburg; two daughters, Nancy Harris and Linda Haygood of Crossett; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, August 12, in the Jones Funeral Home chapel in Crossett with J. W. Harris officiating. Pallbearers were Steve, John and Michael Haygood, Kelley McArthur, Paul Harris and Gary Gallaway. Burial followed services at the Crossroads Cemetery.
Jimmy Ree Warren
Jimmy Ree Warren, 82, of Crossett died Thursday, August 9, 2001, at the Leisure Lodge nursing home in Crossett. A native of Marion, LA, but a Crossett resident for the past eight years, he was retired as a laborer at the Huttig plywood mill. He was preceded in death by his parents, Williams and Florence Everett Warren; three brothers, Vasco Warren, Joe Ollie Benford and Lesley Scott; and two sisters, Lorene Jackson and Briddie Starling.
Survivors include a brother, Minor Warren of Pontiac, MI; sisters Gladest Wimberly of Crossett, Dallas Bohannon of Milwaukee, WI , Carrie Slade of Lake Village, Jerene Jackson of Los Vegas, NV, and Elsie Campbell of Oakland, CA, and a special niece Tunicia "Muffy" Williams of Crossett.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, August 17, in the Cromwell Funeral Home chapel with Rev. O. T. Carlock officiating. Burial will follow services at the Springhill Cemetery in Strong.
