John Hoover Miles
John Hoover Miles, 79, of Crossett died Tuesday, December 11, 2001, at the Overton Brooks VA Hospital in Shreveport, LA. Born September 4, 1922, to Tarlton Van Derren and Ella Mae Dunlap Miles, he was an U. S. Army veteran of World War II, an ironworker for 40 years with Local #79 in Tidewater, VA, and a member of the First Baptist Church of Crossett.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Hugo, William, T. V. and Charles Miles; two sisters, Josephine Fletcher and Bessie Klinefelter; and a son, Gregory V. Miles.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Harry Fuerstenberger of Milford, NJ; a granddaughter, two grandsons, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at 4 p.m. Friday, December 14, in the chapel of Jones Funeral Home of Crossett with Dr. David Newberry officiating.

Dr. Mike Shell
Dr. Mike Shell, 66, of Portland,
died Monday, December 17, 2001, at the Chicot Memorial Hospital in Lake Village. A native of Lubbock, Texas, a resident of Portland for the past 36 years and a former resident of Hamburg, he graduated from Arkansas A & M in Monticello and received his master's degree from Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe. He received his doctorate from the University of Mississippi. He was a education administrator and a former principal at the Portland School and the Portis Elementary School in Hamburg. He was a special education supervisor for five school districts in Southeast Arkansas and for the last year and a half was an education consultant. He was a member, deacon and Sunday School teacher at the Portland Baptist Church for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louie & Effie Mae Taylor Shell and a brother, Jack Shell, Sr.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Piper Shell; a son, Bret Shell and a daughter, Lezlie Shell, all of Portland; a grandson, Kyle Taylor Shell and a granddaughter, Claire Elizabeth Shell.
Memorial services were planned for 4 p.m., Wednesday , December 19, in the Portland Baptist Church. The family will be receiving friends at Dr. Shell's home in Portland Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg. A private burial was to take place Wednesday morning in the Hamburg Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Portland Baptist Church, PO Box 86, Portland, AR 71663.

Mrs. Lillian Standridge
Mrs. Lillian "Lillybean" Standridge, 85, of Dermott died Friday, December 14, 2001, at her home. A native of Hector, she had lived in Dermott for the past 11 years and was a former resident of Montrose and Lake Village. A homemaker and member of the Oak Grove Freewill Baptist Church, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Utah Standridge, in 1990; a son, Rev. James Standridge, in 1995; her parents, Henry and Maudie Heffley Price; and a sister, Lucille Standridge.
Survivors include a daughter, Jeannie Anderson of Burton, Michigan; two sons, Thomas Standridge of Rison and Ronnie Standridge of Collins; one brother, Michael Price of Eudora; one sister, Hazel Ballinger of Russellville; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 16, in the Oak Grove Freewill Baptist Church with Revs. Brian Standridge and Phillip Payne officiating. Pallbearers were Thomas and Ronnie Standridge, William Hardie, Robby Waldrup, Bobby Toth and Jerry Handly. Honorary pallbearers were Michael Standridge and Wifford Coddington. Burial followed services at the Montrose Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg. Memorials may be made to the Montrose Cemetery, c/o Angie Lynn, Lynn Road, Portland, AR 71663.

Mallo Blann Strickland
Mallo Blann Strickland, 87, of Crossett died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001. She was born Oct. 19, 1914, to Charlie and Evie Williams Blann in Hampton, Ark.
Survivors are two sons, Billy C. Strickland of Hampton and Larry Strickland of Crossett; two daughters, Mercille Buck of Crossett and Shirley Goodson of Potosi, Mo.; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, in the Benton Funeral Home chapel in Fordyce. Burial was to follow services at the Means Cemetery near Hampton.
