John Martin Perkins
John Martin Perkins, 89, of Wilmot died Thursday, November 29, 2001, at the University Medical Center in Little Rock. Born to David R. and Mattie Martin Perkins in Wilmot, he attended the public schools in Wilmot and Langston University in Langston, OK. He served the community as a teacher, president of the school board for 15 years, Sunday School teacher, stewart and trustee. He was Worshipful Master of Dexter Lodge #411 for fifteen years.
Survivors include his wife, Lois B. Perkins of Wilmot; three nieces, Karen Harrison of Detroit, Michigan, Blanche Kooly of Cleveland, OH, and Debra Rachell Perkins of Dallas, TX; and a sister-in-law, Ruth C. Perkins of Paris, TX.
Funeral services were Tuesday, December 4, at the Shady Grove Church in Wilmot. Burial followed services at the Jim Smith Cemetery in Wilmot with arrangements by Davis Strickland Funeral Home of Dermott.
Robert Wayne "Slim" Turlington
Robert Wayne "Slim" Turlington, 72, of Crossett, a native of Tatum, TX, died Thursday, December 6, 2001, at his home on Hancock Road. Born January 25, 1929, to Angus and Irene Goad Turlington, he retired from the maintenance department of the Crossett Public Schools in July,1994, after 14 years of service. He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Blanche Hancock Turlington; one sister, Nell Hyatt of Tatum, TX; five daughters, Becky Turlington of Ozark, AL, Sherrie Turlington of Marshall, TX, Sherrye Lewis of Crossett, Kathy Ray of Paragould and Connie Gannaway of Arkansas City; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 9, in the Jones Funeral Home chapel in Crossett with Philip Kelley and Rev. Jody Gannaway officiating. Pallbearers were Wayne Jordan, Donald Noble, Phillip Kelley, J. B. Maxwell, Dale Carpenter and Mike Gates. Honorary pallbearers were James B. Maxwell and Orville Maxwell. Burial followed services at the Lakewood Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the John Pierce Scholarship Fund, c/o Administrative Office, Crossett High School, 301 West Ninth Avenue, Crossett, AR 71635; to the Crossett Cemetery Fund, c/o William E. Finch, 407 East Third Avenue, Crossett, AR 71635, or to any other favorite organization.
Verlon "Sonnyboy" Adams
Verlon "Sonnyboy" Adams, 68, of Hamburg died Monday November 26, 2001, at his residence in the Pine Hill community. A native of Ashley County, he was a Baptist and was preceded in death by his father, Verlon Adams, and two sons, Monroe Adams and Verlon Adams III.
Survivors include his wife, Lora Adams; his mother, Almeter Goree Adams of St. Louis, MO; three brothers, Johnny and wife Irene Jasper and Jimmy "James" Adams of Hamburg and Ira "Buddy" Adams of St. Louis; three sisters, Lucille Daniel of Fountain Hill and Lanobie Allen and Ruby Allen of St. Louis; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Thursday, November 29, in the Cromwell Funeral Home chapel with Rev. W. R. Taylor officiating. Pallbearers were Jackie Lee Robinson, Henry Moore, Jessie Parker, Richard Washington, James Hampton and Johnny Lee Hampton. Honorary pallbearers were John B. Gibbs, Billy Gibbs and Mortiel Gibbs. Burial followed services at the Pugh Cemetery.
Louis "Buddy" Arrington
Louis "Buddy" Arrington, 70, of Hamburg died Tuesday, November 27, 2001, at his home. A native of Ashley County, he was a retired railroad worker. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Annie Snorton Arrington; three sisters and one brother.
Survivors include his wife, Earnestine Arrington; two sons, Ricky and Curtis Arrington of Little Rock; a stepson, Johnny Ray Bennett of Hamburg; three daughters, Nadine Parker of Hamburg, Karen Arrington of Little Rock and Ruby Arrington of Lake Village; two stepdaughters, Florine and husband Johnny Jasper of Hamburg and Teresa and husband Charles Brown of Gary, IN; one sister, Lottie Bell Lyons of Little Rock; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 1, in the Mount Zion Baptist Church with Rev. W. R. Taylor officiating. Pallbearers were Johnny Jasper, Etroy Lyons, Tyrone Bennett and Timothy Bennett. Burial followed services at the Carlock Cemetery under the direction of Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
