Katherine Groce
Katherine Groce, 78, of Warren died Sunday, November 4, 2001, at her home. Born July 29, 1923, in Ashley County to the late Ernest D. and Ola Gibbs Coody, she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Warren. A retired teacher, she served in the Drew Central and Bastrop, LA, school systems. She marriage Conway Wilson Groce on July 19, 1954, and he died in October, 1981. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Erastus Coody, and a sister, Ola Ernestine Coody.
Grave-side services were at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 7, at the Rock Springs Cemetery near Monticello with Rev. Greg Stanley officiating and with arrangements by Frazer's Funeral Home of Warren. Pallbearers were Wayne, Bill Sr., Bill, Tom and Rodger Groce and Brooks Vick. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Warren or to the Rock Springs United Methodist Church building fund.
Tracy Lee Hill
Tracy Lee Hill, 59, of Monticello died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001, at Drew Memorial Hospital in Monticello. Born July 27, 1942, in Ashley County, he was manager of the Hamburg Shirt Factory and a member of the Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church. He was the son of the late Maxwell Hill and Eloise Bates Hill.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Shirley Sanson Hill of Monticello; two sons, Tony Hill of Arkadelphia and Brad Hill of Monticello; four brothers, Dean Hill of Hamburg, Phillip Hill of Little Rock, Ricky Hill of Sacramento, Calif., and Walter Hill of Hamburg; two sisters, Karen Carter of Mountain Home and Charlun Brett of Hamburg; and three grandchildren, Evan Hill, Tyler Hill and Jessy Hill, all of Monticello.
Funeral services were planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 13, in the Stephenson-Dearman chapel in Monticello with Rev. David Jacks officiating. Pallbearers were to be Darrell Windham, Mickey Finley, Billy McDonald, Sonny Withers, Alvin Jordan and Gale Hill. Burial was to follow services at the Union Ridge Cemetery.
Steven Dearell Johnson, Jr.
Steven Dearnell Johnson, Jr., 10, of Oakland, CA, formerly of Crossett, died Saturday, November 3, 2001, at the Oakland Children's Hospital. A native of Crossett, he was a student at the Eastmore Cox Elementary School.
Survivors include his father, Steven Dearell Johnson of Crossett; his stepmother, Dashunda Johnson; his mother, Sharon Robinson of Oakland, CA, and his stepfather, Emmanuel Robinson; one brother, S. D. Johnson of Crossett; three sisters, Tyeishia Johnson and Nakeshia Wilson of Oakland and Donyell Johnson of Crossett; his maternal grandparents, Carrie and Allen Stroud of Portland and James Wilson of Bastrop, LA; and his paternal grandparents, Levell Johnson of Oakland and Rosie Hicks of Bastrop.
Funeral services were planned for 1 p.m. Tuesday, November 13, in the Ivory Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Gregory Baker officiating. Burial was to follow services at the H. B. Adams Cemetery, directed by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
Mrs. Christine Lanier
Mrs. Christine Lanier, 72, of Hamburg died Friday, November 9, 2001, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe, LA. A native of Decatur, AL, and a Hamburg resident for the past ten years, she was a former resident of Thorsby, LA, a homemaker and a Jehovah's Witness. She was preceded in death by her father, Marvin Hardy; her mother, Elsie Bailey Loggins; a sister, Irene Ireland; a grandson, Chris Pennington; and a granddaughter-in-law, Vicki Pennington.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Walter Ed Lanier of Hamburg; a son, Charles Lanier and wife Sandy of Thorsby, AL; three daughters, Glenda Pennington and husband Butch of Hamburg, Elizabeth Rawls and husband Leon of Monticello and Angie Craig and husband Mark of Hamburg; a brother, Donald Kookans and wife Sandy of Erie, PA; a sister, Dorothy Smith and husband George of Fort Myers, FL: 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 11, in the chapel of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg with Scott Roberts and Michael Scott officiating. Pallbearers were Tim Pennington, Tony Rawls, Darren Rawls, B. J. Craig, Charles Lanier, Jr., Henry Bissell, Darren Birdwell, Jarrod Culp and John Smith. Burial followed services at the Antioch Cemetery.
