Freddie Mitchell, Sr.
Freddie Mitchell, Sr., 71, of Portland died Tuesday, October 16, 2001. He was born June 4, 1930, in Parkdale to the late Corine and Monroe Mitchell. A lifelong resident of Ashley County, he was a member of St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church in Montrose. On November 12, 1950, he marriage Geraldine Curtis, and to this union, ten children were born. His second wife, Margaret Mitchell, also preceded him in death. He was known as a farmer, hunter, fisherman, frog hunter, gardener, craftsman, mechanic and cook.
Survivors include eight sons, James Mitchell of Oakland, CA, Freddie and wife Joann Mitchell of Chicago, IL, Jessie and wife Alice Mitchell of Montrose, Eddie and wife Lisa Mitchell of Killeen, TX, Tilon and wife Jeanette Mitchell of Dermott, Edmond and Brandon Mitchell of Portland and Greg Gillis of Montrose; ten daughters, Fannie Mae Mitchell of St. Louis, MO, Mary Wilson of Fort Worth, TX, Corine Mitchell of Montrose, Alice and husband Harold Watts if Chicago, Maud and husband James Mitchell of Chicago, Dell Mitchell of New Orleans, LA, Geraldine "Rosie" and husband Willie Branch of Montrose, Sylvia and husband David Drake of San Antonio, TX, Katina Mitchell of Montrose and Brenda and husband Lucan Hargraves of Dermott; four brothers, Charlie and wife Verna Mae Mitchell of Dermott, Handy and wife Lillie Mitchell, Monroe and wife Annie Pearl Mitchell, and Enoch and wife Desiree Mitchell, all of Kenosha, WI; one sister, Girlean Bowie of Cleveland, OH; 40 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 20, in the Number Two Baptist Church in Portland with Revs. Archie Smith and Albert Fenceroy officiating. Pallbearers were Freddie Jr., Eddie, Edmond, Jesse Sr., Tilon Sr., and Brandon Mitchell, Jake Gay, Kevin Frazier, Greg Gillis and Seafar Frazier. Honorary pallbearers were George Thomas, Jr., Joe Bonner, Robert Williams, William C. Woods, Sylvester Curl, Charles Wade, Sr., and Charlie, Monroe, Handy and Enoch Mitchell. Burial followed services at the Number Two Cemetery with arrangements by Dillard Funeral Home of Eudora.
Louis Douglas Norrell
Louis Douglas Norrell, 51, of Hamburg died Sunday, November 4, 2001, at his home. A lifelong resident of Hamburg, he was a former construction worker for David Crockett and a Methodist. He was preceded in death by his father, Mr. Louis Norrell, Jr.
Survivors include a son, Adam Louis Norrell of Atlanta, GA; and his mother, Grace Norrell of Hamburg.
Grave-side services were at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 8, at the Carlock Cemetery with ro. Roy Craig officiating. Arrangements were by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
Mr. Charles G. Grubb
Mr. Charles G. Grubb, 72, of Hamburg, died Saturday, November 3, 2001, at his residence. A native of Fountain Hill and a resident of the Promise Land community east of Hamburg for the past 32 years, he served in the US Air Force from 1948 until 1952. He retired in 1991 from the Ashley County Road Department as the road foreman in the Delta Area. He was a Baptist and attended the Promise Land Missionary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by parents, Ray & Lonnie Jim Locke Grubb, and four brothers, George Lee, James E., Cecil Dwain and Doyle E. Grubb.
He is survived by his wife, Charlie Mae Lair Grubb of Hamburg; two sons, Richard Grubb of Hollandale, MS and Max Grubb of Hamburg; three daughters, Patricia Simpson and Kay Avery of Eudora and Glenda Jones of Shreveport, LA; a brother, Billy Grubb of Beebe; and 16 grandchildren.
Funeral services were planned are 2 p.m., Tuesday, November 6, in the Promise Land Missionary Baptist Church with Revs. Kenny Williams & Bill Woodall officiating. Pallbearers were to J.R. Grubb, Nicholas Simpson, Brandon Richter, Tony Grubb, Jonathan Grubb, Daniel Richter, Devin Richter, Zachary Grubb, Bill Grubb, Tyler Richter, Jordan Richter, Emory Grubb and Spencer Richter. Interment was to follow services at the Promise Land Cemetery under the direction of Jones Funeral Home of Hamburg. Memorials may be made to the Promise Land Cemetery Association, c/o Mrs. JoAnn Sullivan, 318 Ashley Road 131, Hamburg, AR 71646.
Carl Chester "Raymond" Lewis
Carl Chester "Raymond" Lewis, 76, of Hamburg died Wednesday, October 31, 2001, at the Arkansas Heart Hospital in Little Rock. A native and lifelong resident of Hamburg and retired as a laborer at the Georgia-Pacific paper mill, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Ida Marie Jackson; his parents, Carl and Caldonia Tucker Lewis; two brothers, Sonny Kemp and LaVaughn Harris; and one sister, June Faye Bunton.
Survivors include three sons, Chris T. Lewis and Carl Terry "C. T." Lewis of Hamburg and Lexie Lewis of Crossett; three daughters, Linda Hill and Bridget Lewis of Hamburg and Juanita Booker of Gary, IN; two sisters, Carlene Tucker of Hamburg and Dorothy Harris of Los Angeles, CA; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 7, in the Mount Zion Baptist Church with Rev. W. R. Taylor officiating. Pallbearers were to be Lawrence Tippie, R. D. Morgan, James Prewitt, Willie Ashford, Jessie Banks and Willie Earl Jacob. Burial was to follow services at the Johnson Memorial Cemetery, directed by Cromwell Funeral Home of Hamburg.
