Elsie Ruth Sumner's first experience with banking was in 1912 when at age eight, she deposited her $5 savings of Lincoln pennies and buffalo nickels at the new bank in her hometown of Katy, Texas, near Houston. She was the bank's first depositor.

Sumner, 98, died Friday at Siloam Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She had been a pioneer for women in banking, with a career that spanned from 1919 to 1984, when she retired as vice president of First National Bank of Siloam Springs.

Sumner's banking career began when she was 15. She had been working part-time as a switchboard operator at the telephone company in Gentry, when J. Knapp Covey of Citizens Bank in Gentry offered her a job assisting the bookkeeper, Sadie Monroe. Sumner's first duties were stamping and filing checks and her wages were $20 a month. Marion Wasson was president of the bank

For many years Sumner, Tom Whiteside and Martha Campbell were the only three employees at the Bratt-Wasson bank. As her skills and banking knowledge increased and both the town and the bank grew, Sumner progressed from bookkeeper to assistant cashier, secretary of the board of directors, assistant vice president and vice president.

Marion Wasson, son of the original bank owner, who followed his father's footsteps in banking, remembers Sumner as a woman dedicated to her job and her community.

"She was outgoing and active in forming an organization of business and professional women. She helped women who were unemployed to find jobs," Wasson said. "She also held every office there was in Eastern Star."

Another friend described Sumner as a "serving lady," who was a "real volunteer and a doer in the community -- truly an institution and the guts of Bratt-Wasson Bank."

"Every Memorial Day, you could see Elsie sitting under a tent at the cemetery, collecting donations for the cemetery," Sharon Wasson said.

Many remember Sumner as a dedicated worker who was actively involved in church and community. She was a member of Twin Springs Christian Church, but also was involved in activities at the neighboring First Methodist Church, alongside her close friend, Elizabeth Goss. The two helped provide meals for bereaved families, cooked for church suppers, were members of the Susannah Wesley Women's Circle, and oversaw the church pantry.

Sumner was firm in her beliefs, Bill Ruble, who knew her about 60 years, said. "She was outspoken. What she believed in, she really believed in," he said. Ruble's wife worked for Sumner at the bank in 1946, he said.

"I went to visit the residents at the nursing home and Elsie was in her wheelchair. Some say she hasn't known people for about 10 years, but she looked at me and said, 'I know who you are,' when I spoke to her."

Fred Reed, a friend and coworker at the bank, said, "If Elsie had a bad side, I never saw it." Reed and his wife Evelyn were members of the Order of the Eastern Star with Sumner. "She was faithful and had a deep interest in the Cookson Hills Christian School in Kansas, Okla. Elsie was a fine Christian person and I had deep respect for her," Fred Reed said.

Art Melson, who began working at the Bratt-Wasson Bank in 1951, echoed others' recollections of Sumner's professional and community service. "She was a hard worker and active in church and civic affairs," Melson said.

Sumner was a member of Daughters of American Revolution and a founder of Business and Professional Women in Siloam Springs.

Survivors include a sister, Capitola Patterson of Casa Grande, Ariz., and several nieces and nephews.
