Clara Ann Barton
Clara Ann Barton, 95, of Garfield, Ark., died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, at Northwest Medical Center of Benton County in Bentonville, Ark. She was born June 24, 1909, in Cosby, Mo., to Frank William Balsiger and Rosa Ellen Glasner Balsiger.
A resident of Garfield since 1947, she had also lived in Missouri, South Dakota and Tacoma, Wash. She marriage Harold Barton on Sept. 6, 1930, in Hiawatha, Kan.
She worked at the Garfield Canning Factory and the Model Laundry for many years. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Denver, Mo., for 84 years. She was a member of the New Meadowbrook Home Extension Club for more than 50 years and enjoyed quilting and all types of needlework. She supported the Volunteer Ambulance Service and the Northeast Benton County Volunteer Fire Department with pies, cakes and quilts.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Barton, in 1980; a daughter, Rosemary Barton; a granddaughter, Vickie Ann Williams; three brothers; and a sister.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Bill Barton and Bernice Barton of Garfield, Ark.; a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy Williams and Stanley Williams of Garfield; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, at Sisco Funeral Home of Pea Ridge, Ark.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at the Sisco Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jack Austin.
Burial will be at the Ruddick Cemetery, near Garfield.
Jean Edens
Jean Edens, 73, of Bentonville, Ark., died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rogers, Ark.
Arrangements are pending with Callison-Lough Funeral Service of Bentonville.
Carol M. Hatcher
Carol M. Hatcher, 81, of Bentonville, Ark., died Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at Regency Hospital of Northwest Arkansas in Fayetteville. She was born Nov. 23, 1923, in Oswego, Kan., to Ardie Dickerman and Ione Ward Dickerman.
She moved to Bentonville in 1965 from Joplin, Mo. She was a co-owner and operator of Hatcher Appliance in Bentonville. She was a member of the Elm Tree Christian Church in Bentonville. She enjoyed listening to music, playing the organ, needlework, yard work and dogs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell Wayne Hatcher.
Survivors include a daughter, Becky Hatcher of Rogers, Ark.; a sister, Ardis Ann Romine of Oswego, Kan.; a grandson, Adam Wayne Burton of Rogers; and a special friend, Jimmie Burger of Rogers.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 4, at the Elm Tree Christian Church in Bentonville with the Rev. Jerry Young.
Inurnment will be Saturday, March 5, at the Oswego Cemetery in Oswego, Kan.
Cremation arrangements are by Stockdale Funeral Services of Rogers, Ark.

Shannon Billy Wade Jones
Shannon Billy Wade Jones, 42, of Bentonville, Ark., died Wednesday, March 2, 2005, at Northwest Medical Center of Benton County in Bentonville. He was born May 13, 1962, in Rogers, Ark., to Billy S. Jones and Patricia Ruhl Jones.
He was preceded in death by his father, Billy S. Jones, in 2002.
Survivors include three children, Justin Teehee of Bentonville, Chaunte Humphrey of Anchorage, Alaska, and Natoshia Woodcock of Fayetteville, Ark; his mother, Patricia Ruhl Jones of Bentonville; a brother, Shawn Jones of Bentonville; a sister, Eufaula Teehee of Bentonville; and his companion, Deanna Clark.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, March 4, at the Backstrom-Pyeatte Chapel in Bentonville.
Graveside funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at the Bentonville Cemetery with the Rev. Larry Markham.

Anna Mae Howard Searles
Anna Mae Howard Searles, 98, of Bentonville, Ark., died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at Bentonville Manor Nursing Home. She was born Nov. 22, 1906, in the Osage Nation of Indian Territory, now Tulsa, Okla., to Frank Howard and Clara Bowman Howard.
She graduated from Central High School in Tulsa. She received an associate of arts degree from Odessa Texas Junior College, and a bachelor of arts degree and a master of education degree from the University of Arkansas.
She marriage Isaac Adams Searles on May 26, 1933, in Fayetteville, Ark. The couple had lived in Kilgore and Midland, Texas; and Rogers, Ark. She taught English and journalism at Rogers High School until she retired in 1972. She then taught at Northwest Arkansas Community College until 1990.
She was an active volunteer with Altrusa International, Delta Kappa Gamma, the Rogers Garden Club, the Benton County Historical Society, the Retired Teachers Association, the Beaver Lake Literacy Council, Kappa Kappa Iota, the Ozark Natural Science Center and the Girls Scouts. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church of Rogers, a lifetime member of the Parent-Teacher Association and a charter member of the Apple Spur Community Club. She was director of the Benton County Learning Center and was a docent at the Rogers Historical Museum for many years.
She donated 10 acres of virgin prairie, known as the "Searles Prairie," to the Arkansas National Heritage Commission. She was featured in an article in "Guideposts" magazine about the prairie and was chosen as an "Arkansas Hero" by then-Governor Bill Clinton. The Altrusa Club of Rogers is publishing a cookbook titled "From Anna Mae’s Table" to raise funds for the club’s dental program, which she initiated.
She enjoyed cooking, gardening, teaching and volunteering in the community.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac Searles, in 1987; four brothers, Leo Howard, Ercell Howard, Calvin Howard and Covell Howard; and a sister, Alta Lou Hable.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann Hoppe and Herman Hoppe of Rogers, Ark.; two granddaughters, Debra Niemann of Lake Jackson, Texas, and Diane Puckett of Bedford, Texas; two great-granddaughters, Sally Puckett and Katie Puckett; a great-grandson, Max Niemann; two sisters-in-law, Effie Howard of Tulsa, Okla., and Ruth Howard of Bartlesville, Okla.; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 3, at Callison-Lough Funeral Home of Rogers, Ark.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 4, at Peace Lutheran Church in Rogers with Pastor Erik Boye.
Burial will be at the Barton City Cemetery in Liberal, Mo.
Pallbearers will be Michael Niemann, Warren Puckett, Alan McElroy, Phil Garling, A. R. Estes and Gene Schubert. Memorials may be made to Peace Lutheran Church in Rogers.
Janet Lynn Geng
Janet Lynn Geng, 53, of Centerton, Ark., died Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville, Ark. She was born March 8, 1951, in Stockton, Calif., to Melvin Dean Combs and Wilma Jean Bramen Combs. She marriage Edmund Josef Geng on Dec. 19, 1978, in Germany. She retired as a teacher at Cleveland Elementary School in Stockton, Calif. While teaching at Cleveland Elementary School, she was injured in a school shooting in 1989. She was active in the campaign for gun control in the early 1990s. She was founder and executive director of the Children’s Museum of Stockton. She worked with the Oakland Project in California, helping people to learn the American culture.
She moved to northwest Arkansas in April 1995 from Stockton, Calif., and worked as education curator at the Rogers Historical Museum in Rogers, Ark. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Rogers.
She received many awards, including the Crossed Palms Medal of Honor from the Boy Scouts of America in 1989; the California State Senate Woman of the Year award in 1992; the California governor’s Courage to Care Award in 1994; and the Arkansas Museum Association’s Staff Person of the Year award in 1996. She enjoyed reading, teaching children, traveling the world and learning about other cultures.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilma and Melvin Combs.
Survivors include her husband of 26 years, Edmund Josef Geng; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Michael Geng and Laura Geng of Bentonville, Ark., and Kevin Geng of the home; and a brother and sister-in-law, Randy Combs and Vicki Combs of Modesto, Calif.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at Peace Lutheran Church in Rogers, Ark.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 12, at Peace Lutheran Church in Rogers with Pastor Erik Boye.
Cremation arrangements are by Stockdale Funeral Services of Rogers.

Mattie V. Duffel
Mattie V. Duffel, 81, of Gentry, Ark., died Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, at Siloam Springs Memorial Hospital in Siloam Springs, Ark. She was born Oct. 10, 1923, in Yeager, Okla., to William E. Lyons and Rose Evelyn Jackson Lyons. She spent 30 years in California before returning to Gentry, where she had lived for the past 20 years. She was a weighmaster for the Funsten Nut Co. in California before she retired. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Gentry. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond T. Duffel, on May 19, 1988; and a daughter, Carolyn Kauffman. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Jacobson of Missoula, Mont., and Paula Tilghman of San Diego, Calif.; a brother, Burl Lyons of Gentry; two sisters, Jewell Kee of Ceres, Calif., and Rosalee Morris of Riverbank, Calif.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, March 4, at Wasson Funeral Home of Siloam Springs, Ark. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at the First Baptist Church in Gentry with Mark Evans and Dr. Robin Cowin. Burial will be at the Gentry Cemetery.
Kenneth Leon Thurman
Kenneth Leon Thurman, 73, of Siloam Springs, Ark., a lifetime resident of northwest Arkansas, died Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville, Ark. He was born Jan. 27, 1932, in Washington County, Ark., to Elize Thurman and Tina Poole Thurman.
He was a Korean War veteran, serving in the U.S. Air Force. He marriage Margie Brandon on Feb. 26, 1964. Prior to his retirement, he was a medical admissions officer for the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Fayetteville, Ark. He was a member of the Weddington Missionary Baptist Church in Wedington, Ark.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Thurman.
Survivors include his wife, Margie Thurman; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Mike Thurman and Maria Thurman of Montgomery, Ala., Marty Thurman and Ann Thurman of Huntsville, Ark., and Kenny Thurman, and Lenny Thurman and Regina Thurman, all of Siloam Springs; three daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly Williams and Gurney Williams of Spiro, Okla., Jeannie Palmer and Chris Palmer of Titus, Ala., and Tina Evans and John Evans of Siloam Springs; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 4, at the Weddington Missionary Baptist Church in Wedington, Ark., with the Rev. Phil Misenheimer.
Burial will be at the Weddington Cemetery in Wedington.
