Hugh Thomas ‘Tom’ Platt IV

Hugh Thomas "Tom" Platt IV, 69, of Springdale, Ark., died Saturday, April 2, 2005, at his home following complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was born Sept. 30, 1935, in Little Rock, Ark., to Hugh Thomas "Bud" Platt III and Emmy Kretschmar Platt.

He moved with his parents from Fort Smith, Ark., to Springdale in 1952, at which time the family purchased Jumbo Motor Supply in downtown Springdale. He graduated from Springdale High School in 1953 and from St. John’s College in Winfield, Kan., in 1955.

He marriage Roberta Eidson on Aug. 14, 1959. He received a bachelor of science in business administration degree in marketing from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville in 1961. After completing his education, he continued as owner of Jumbo Motor Supply until his retirement in 1999.

He was a U.S. Army veteran. He served on the board of directors of the American Savings and Loan Association, and was a board member of the Automotive Service Industry Association and the Arkansas Wholesalers Association. He was an active member of Salem Lutheran Church in Springdale, where he served as a choir member and in many elected and voluntary leadership positions.

Survivors include his wife, Roberta Eidson Platt; a daughter, Kathryn Elizabeth Platt; a son, Mark Daniel Platt; his stepmother, Rosalie E. Platt of Fort Smith, Ark.; a sister and brother-in-law, Susan Parbhoo and Ernest Parbhoo of Lake Worth, Fla.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. Michael Platt and Bettye Platt of Rogers, Ark., and Dr. Richard Platt and Mary Platt of Pensacola, Fla.; two grandchildren, Ivy Dawn Platt and Aaron Xavier Platt; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, at Salem Lutheran Church in Springdale with Pastor Mark Louderback.

Private family burial will be held at a later date at the Zion Cemetery in Springdale.

Arrangements are by Sisco Funeral Chapel of Springdale.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Circle of Life Hospice, 610 E. Emma Ave., Springdale, AR 72764; or to the Salem Lutheran School Scholarship Fund, 1800 W. Emma Ave., Springdale, AR 72764.

John Fay Montroy

Dr. John Fay Montroy, 89, of Bella Vista, Ark., died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at Lake Wales Medical Center in Lake Wales, Fla., of complications after surgery. He was born Feb. 22, 1915, in Le Roy, N. Y. He was a physician. He was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Bella Vista. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 44 years, Marian Alice Montroy. Survivors include his wife, Catherine Montroy; three daughters, Fay Vrana of Oklahoma City, Okla., Sharon Scofield of Baton Rouge, La., and Marilyn Blackmon of La Canada, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Deborah Rhine of Weatherford, Texas; a son, John Henry Montroy of Little Rock, Ark.; two stepsons, Robert W. Ritchie of Plano, Texas, and Gary L. Ritchie of Maui, Hawaii; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 5, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Bella Vista with Father Andrew Smith. Arrangements are by the Bella Vista Funeral Home and Crematory. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Knights of Columbus Scholarship Fund, in care of St. Bernard Catholic Church, 1 St. Bernard Way, Bella Vista, AR 72715.

Carol Hatcher

Carol Hatcher, 81, of Bentonville, Ark., died Tuesday, March 1, 2005. Arrangements are pending with Stockdale Funeral Services of Rogers, Ark.

Janet Geng

Janet Geng, 53, of Centerton, Ark., died Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville, Ark. She was born March 8, 1951.

Arrangements are pending with Stockdale Funeral Services of Rogers, Ark.

Gary David Carver

Gary David Carver, 64, of Claremore, Okla., died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at Craig County General Hospital in Vinita, Okla. He was born Nov. 4, 1940, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Lowell Carver and Maude Nagel Carver.

He lived in Cincinnati for the first 10 years of his life, then moved with his family to Tulsa, Okla. He graduated from Will Rogers High School in 1958. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and subsequently the Marine Reserves. He marriage Gloria Dunn on Sept. 18, 1959.

Upon discharge from the military, he began his career in retail, working for TG&Y; stores as a retail manager. He opened two Family Centers in Sand Springs, Okla., where he and his family lived for 17 years. He moved to Woodward, Okla., to open another TG&Y; Family Center.

He was then offered employment at Wal-Mart’s Home Office in Bentonville, Ark., by Sam Walton. In 1976, he was promoted to merchandise manager and continued in that position until 1983, when he went to work for HEB Grocery Stores in Corpus Christi, Texas. He later became the store manager of the original Wal-Mart Supercenter in Claremore until retiring in 1997.

Following retirement from Wal-Mart, he sold cars in Tulsa and Claremore, and most recently worked as a customer service representative for Addtronics. He was an avid horseman and enjoyed his rural home, taking care of his horses, team penning and trail riding.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Carver; two daughters and a son-in-law, Cathy Dickens and Kevin Dickens of Neosho, Mo., and Kim Holderby of Claremore; a son, Craig Carver of Russellville, Ark.; four grandsons, Kelly Dickens, Kyle Dickens and Kaden Dickens, all of Neosho, and Benjamin Holderby of Claremore; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard Carver and Beth Carver of Tulsa, Okla.; two sistersin-law, Debra Dester of Tulsa and Tammy Minn of California; six nieces and nephews, Nina Carver, Nikkol Carver, Sam Dester and Jacob Dester, all of Tulsa, and Kaili Minn and Kendall Minn of California; and a close friend, Hank Holderby. Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 28, at the First United Methodist Church in Claremore, Okla. Burial was at the Floral Haven Memorial Gardens in Broken Arrow, Okla. Arrangements were by Rice Funeral Service of Claremore. Memorials may be made to the Rogers County Community Services Center, P. O. Box 446, Claremore, OK 74018.

Phyllis June Butler

Phyllis June Butler, 60, of Sarcoxie, Mo., died Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, at Cox Medical Center South in Springfield, Mo. She was born Dec. 31, 1944, in Hood River, Ore., to Gilbert Ross and Hazel Nida Ross.

She graduated from Sarcoxie High School and received a bachelor’s degree in social welfare from Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg. She worked for the Division of Family services in childcare, then later for Heaven on Earth Hospice in Miami, Okla. She was a member of the Monett (Mo.) General Baptist Church. She was an organ donor.

Survivors include a son, Casey Butler of Sarcoxie; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol Brown and Sherman Brown of Marionville, Mo., and Marla England and Dale England of Neosho, Mo.; her parents, Gilbert and Hazel Ross of Sarcoxie; a sister, Linda West of Sarcoxie; three grandchildren, Wyley Brown of Marionville, and Amber England and Alisha England of Neosho; and a special friend, Larry Cameron of Sarcoxie.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 4, at Fohn Funeral Home, Williamson Chapel, of Cassville, Mo., with the Rev. Geoff Buffalo. Memorials may be made to the Wyley Brown Trust, in care of Fohn Funeral Home, Williamson Chapel, Cassville, Mo.

Deborah Ann Hamilton

Deborah Ann Hamilton, 36, of Watts, Okla., died Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, at Siloam Springs Memorial Hospital in Siloam Springs, Ark. She was born April 8, 1968, in Columbus, Ohio, to Willie Caudill and Barbara Frye Caudill-Rice.

She marriage Kenneth Hamilton on March 21, 1998, in Columbus. She and her husband owned Hart Angel Transportation, a trucking company. She was active in the Faith Chapel church in Siloam Springs.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Hamilton; two daughters, Sarah Hamilton and Stephanie Hamilton, both of Siloam Springs, Ark.; her mother, Barbara Rice of Columbus, Ohio; her father, Willie Caudill of Columbus; four brothers, Jerry Rice, Willie Harold Caudill Jr., Mike Caudill and Steve Caudill, all of Columbus; her grandmother, Sola Ann Caudill of Columbus; and a granddaughter, Lanie Brook Young of Siloam Springs.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, at the Backstrom-Pyeatte Chapel in Siloam Springs, Ark., with the Rev. J. D. Beckett.

Burial will be at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Siloam Springs.

Arrangements are by Backstrom-Pyeatte Funeral Home of Siloam Springs.

Anna Mae Searles

Anna Mae Howard Searles, age 98, died Saturday, February 26, 2005, at Bentonville Manor Nursing Home. She was born November 22, 1906, in the Osage Nation of Indian Territory, now Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Frank and Clara (Bowman) Howard. She marriage Isaac Adams Searles on May 26, 1933, in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1987; her parents; four brothers, Leo Howard, Ercell Howard, Calvin Howard, Covell Howard; and one sister, Alta Lou Hable.

She is survived by one daughter, Mary Ann Hoppe, and son-in-law, Herman Hoppe, of Rogers; two granddaughters, Debra Niemann and husband Michael Niemann of Lake Jackson, Texas, Diane Puckett and husband Warren Puckett of Bedford, Texas; two great-granddaughters, Sally Puckett and Katie Puckett; and one great-grandson, Max Niemann; two sisters-in-law, Effie Howard of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Ruth Howard of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Anna Mae graduated from Central High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She received an Associate of Arts degree from Odessa Texas Junior College, a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Arkansas and a Master of Education degree from the University of Arkansas.

She taught English and journalism at Rogers High School until she retired in 1972. She then taught at Northwest Arkansas Community College until 1990.

Anna Mae was a very active volunteer with many local organizations: Altrusa International, Delta Kappa Gamma, Rogers Garden Club, the Benton County Historical Society, the Retired Teachers Association, The Beaver Lake Literacy Council, Kappa Kappa Iota, the Ozark Natural Science Center, the Girls Scouts, and was a lifetime member of the Parent-Teacher Association. She was the director of the Benton County Learning Center and helped many adults learn to read and speak English. She was a docent for many years at the Rogers Historical Museum, and a charter member of the Apple Spur Community Club.

Anna Mae donated 10 acres of virgin prairie to the Arkansas National Heritage Commission, and it is known as the "Searles Prairie." She was featured in an article in "Guideposts" magazine about the prairie and was chosen as an "Arkansas Hero" by then-Governor Bill Clinton. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church of Rogers. The Searles family purchased 20 acres in Rogers in 1939, but only resided there during the summers, and lived in Kilgore and Midland, Texas, during the school years. Ike and Anna Mae retired in 1961 and moved from Midland, Texas, to Rogers, permanently.

Anna Mae loved: the Lord, her family, cooking, gardening, teaching and volunteering in the community where she lived. The Altrusa Club of Rogers is publishing a cookbook titled, "From Anna Mae’s Table" to raise funds for their dental program that Anna Mae initiated many years ago. The cookbook will be available in April.

Visitation will be held at the Callison-Lough Funeral Home of Rogers on Thursday, March 3 rd, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 4 th, at 10:00 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, 805 W. Olrich St., Rogers, Arkansas. Pastor Erik Boye will be officiating. Interment will be at Barton City Cemetery, Liberal, Missouri. Pallbearers will be Michael Niemann, Warren Puckett, Alan McElroy, Phil Garling, A. R. Estes and Gene Schubert.

Memorial gifts may be made to Peace Lutheran Church of Rogers.

Jami LeeAnn Mader

Jami LeeAnn Mader, 16, of Bentonville, Ark., died Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at Northwest Medical Center of Benton County in Bentonville. She was born Sept. 25, 1988, in Rogers, Ark., to Mike Mader and Michelle L. Anderson Mader.

She was raised and educated in Bentonville. She enjoyed animals, music, art and writing. She had played basketball for several years.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Dwayne Mader; two great-grandfathers, Jack Stennett and August Mader; and her maternal great-grandparents, Harold "Dutch" Anderson and Laura Anderson, and Walter Lundberg and Elsie Lundberg.

Survivors include her parents, Mike and Michelle Mader of the home; her paternal grandmother, Sheila Ziegelmeier of Rogers, Ark.; her maternal grandparents, Richard and Mavis Anderson of Bentonville; and two great-grandmothers, Jean Stennett of Bentonville and Ann Mader of Attica, Kan.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 29, at the First Presbyterian Church of Bentonville with the Rev. Art Fogarty and the Rev. Laura Fleetwood.

Arrangements are by the Bella Vista Funeral Home and Crematory in Bella Vista, Ark. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Northwest Arkansas Children’s Shelter, 7702 S. W. Regional Airport Blvd., Bentonville, AR 72712.

Ruth Ellen Smalley Williams

Ruth Ellen Smalley Williams, 84, of Berryville, Ark., died Friday, March 25, 2005, at her home. She was born Oct. 23, 1920, in Cherokee County, Okla., to John D. and Elzenna Scroggs Smalley.

She marriage Everett Williams on Aug. 13, 1938. She worked at Ocoma Foods in Berryville, Tyson Foods in Green Forest, Ark., and retired in 1999 from the Berryville School District after nearly 30 years, having served in the school cafeteria.

She was a Christian from an early age and was a member of Boyd Church in Oak Grove, Ark. She enjoyed singing, coordinating Christmas programs, cooking and being a grandma to everyone. She and her husband frequently opened their home to visiting preachers, and she was a volunteer with St. John’s Berryville Hospital Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband Everett Williams; five brothers, Everett, Clarence, Chester, Paul and Carter Smalley; four sisters, Pearl Roberts, Clara Utt, Mabel Doss and Nora Ewing; and one son-in-law, Lonnie Awbrey.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Lonnie Williams and Linda Williams of Berryville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Eula Dean and Kenneth Allen of Green Forest and Edna and Tom Bear of Rogers, Ark.; one brother, Jesse Smalley of Green Forest; six grandchildren, Belinda Howerton, Doug Allen, Deretha Walker, Lisa Anderson, Kevin Williams and Brad Awbrey; twelve great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, March 28, 2005, at the Boyd Church in Oak Grove with the Rev. Les Robison and Brother David Keith. Interment will follow in the Hale Cemetery under the direction of Nelson Funeral Service of Berryville. Memorial donations may be made to St. John’s Hospice or to the Boyd Church. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren and their spouses. Honorary pallbearers will be her great grandchildren and their spouses, and her great great grandchildren.
