MALVERN -- Lucille Crowe Pilcher, 84, of Malvern died Feb. 1, 2005, in Arkadelphia. She was born Oct. 31, 1920, in Midway, daughter of the late Hardy Sherman Buck and the late Sarah Catherine Hughes Buck. She was a member of the Landmark Missionary Baptist Church of Malvern and a homemaker. She was an active member of the Malvern Senior Citizens.
Survivors include: Her husband, Joe Pilcher: three daughters, Maurice VanRoekel of Temecula, Calif., Mary Collins of Arkadelphia and Brenda Treadway of Bismarck; three stepdaughters, Barbara Davis of Hot Springs, Sharon Cash of Friendship and Brenda Kennedy of Antioch; two stepsons, Joe Howard Pilcher and Bruce Pilcher of Malvern; one sister, Pauline Ables of Poyen; and six grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Atkinson Funeral Home with Harold Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Neighbors Cemetery at Midway. Pallbearers will be Michael Hall, Kris Treadway, Michael Daniels, Jeff Buck, Kevin Crowe and Bruce Efird. Honorary pallbearers will be her step-grandsons.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
James Austin Capps
Colonel James Austin Capps, Sr. (Ret. USAR) of Gurdon , Arkansas , went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, 14 April, 2007.
Col. Capps was born in Dobyville , AR on 22 November, 1913, as the eldest child of Della Mae Wingfield Capps and James Roy Capps. Preceded in death by his parents, his brother Layton , and his devoted loving wife of 67 years, Mary Lou Wells Capps, he is survived by his two sons Col. James A. Capps, Jr. (Ret. USAF, MD) and wife Judy, and William Roy Capps, D.D.S and wife Betty of Hot Springs and Gurdon. Other survivors are his two sisters, Louise Mann of Houston , Texas , and Alyene Fowler of Ft. Scott , Kansas .
Affectionately known as “Big Daddy” to his family, the memory of his famous Easter boxes full of chocolate candy and Christmas surprises will be carried forever in the hearts of his seven grandchildren, Don Austin Capps of Gravette, AR, Jon Thornton Capps of Centerton, AR, Julia Anne Beldyga of Bella Vista, Mary Frances Capps of Springdale, AR, Leslie Ann Whalen and Charles Michael Capps of Hot Springs, and Jon Mark Capps of Gurdon. The love that Big Daddy invested in his family will be carried on in the lives of his nineteen great-grandchildren.
A life-long resident of Clark County and a graduate of Ouachita Baptist College where he was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, Austin served his Country during World War II in North Africa , Italy and France . Under his command in Marseille, France, Austin’s 379th Port BN Army unit was awarded the Pacific Victory Cup in recognition by the US Army for Excellency in Performance of Duty in facilitating troop and supply ships. Austin continued his service to his country by enlisting in the US Army Reserves upon his return to Gurdon.
He carried with him his diligence to duty and his service to his fellowman while in the retail and rental business for 70 years in Gurdon. The foundation for Austin ’s high level of commitment to his family, church and community was his love for his Lord Jesus Christ. He lived his faith by always striving to benefit the town of Gurdon both professionally and personally. Exercising his gift of mercy and service, he was always sensitive to recognize the needs of others and respond quickly.
He will be remembered as a fine man with a most generous heart – his blessings from the Lord were always shared with others. Austin was a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church of Gurdon, serving as an Elder, Sunday School teacher and choir member while his late wife Mary Lou was organist for over 40 years. Active in every aspect of life in Gurdon, Austin was a Paul Harris Fellow in the Gurdon Rotary where Mary Lou was the first woman member and also recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. Austin was a faithful Gideon, former member of Board of Trustees of Baptist Hospital in Arkadelphia and receiver of many awards for his retail success while owner of Austin ’s Appliance and Furniture in Gurdon.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 18 April, 2007, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Gurdon. Officiating will be Reverend Rick Pyron, Lay Leader Liz Hardin, and one of Austin ’s beloved “second children”, Col Jackie Ryan, Chaplain , US Army. Serving as pallbearers will be Austin’s grandsons, great grandsons and grandsons-in-law, Jeremy Whalen and Cory Beldyga. Interment will follow in Rose Hedge Cemetery with military honors. The family will host a Celebration of Life visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. in the church fellowship hall. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Horne Funeral Home, Gurdon.
Rosie M. Rogers
ARKADELPHIA -- Rosie Mae Rogers, 56, of Arkadelphia, formerly of Gurdon, died Feb. 1, 2005, at Baptist Health Medical Center-Arkadelphia. She was born March 25, 1948, in Waldo, the daughter of the late Lossie and Siller Rogers Sr. She was a retired nurse's aide and a member of First Memorial Church of God in Christ where she was a choir member and a Sunday school teacher.
Survivors include: Two brothers, Terry Rogers of Arkadelphia and Louis Rogers of Gurdon; and one sister, Clara Cummings of Gurdon.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Memorial Church of God in Christ with Eld. Chester Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hedge Cemetery at Gurdon under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.
Benjamin E. Davis
MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Benjamin E. Davis of Montgomery, Ala., formerly of Arkadelphia, died Feb. 1, 2005. He was the son of the late Buster and Edith Davis.
Survivors include: His wife, Georgie Davis of Montgomery; a son, Benjamin Davis of Hayward, Calif.; a daughter, Gena Davis of Montgomery; three brothers, Bishop Willie E. Davis, Moses Davis and Darrell Davis of Hayward, Calif.; and two sisters, Elizabeth Davis and Marie Hall of Milwaukee, Wis.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Feb. 8 at Cathedral Restoration Church. Burial will be in Damascus Cemetery in Green ville, Ala., under the direction of Ross-Clayton Funeral Home of Montgomery.
Hettie M. Smith
Hettie Mary Smith, 93, of Bellflower, Calif., formerly of Manning, died Jan. 29, 2001 at Woodruff Convalescent Center in Bellflower. She was born Aug. 8, 1907 in Kansas, daughter of the late Sterling Richard and Victoria Jane Fannon Ausbun. She was a clothing finisher and a Baptist. She was the widow of Clyde Smith.
Survivors include: Two daughters, Arlene DeKoning of Chino, Calif., and Gladys Combs of San Bernardino, Calif.; two sons, Carl Smith of Colgate, Okla., and Merl Smith of Bellflower, Calif.; a sister, Della Mae Erwin of Las Vegas, Nev.; and several grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Delamar Cemetery near Manning with Rev. James Calhoun officiating. Burial will be under the direction of Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home of Arkadelphia.
Wyndal Ira Minton
Wyndal I. Minton, Sr. age 79 of Gurdon died Tuesday, July 31, 2007. He was Owner of Minton Farms, member Beech Street Baptist Church and a US Army Veteran of World War II. Mr. Minton has served as a board member on the Clark County Farm Bureau, the Clark County School Board and was currently a board member of the Bethlehem Cemetery
Survivors include his devoted wife of 59 years Betty Stone Minton

Luther M. Norris
Luther "L.M." Norris, 84, of Little Rock died Feb. 6, 2001. He was born July 31, 1916 in Poughkeepsie. He was an employee of Missouri Pacific Railroad, a World War II veteran, a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Beech Street Baptist Church.
Survivors include: A son, John Norris of Little Rock; a sister, Geneva Horne of Arkadelphia; two grandchildren and a niece.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Rose Hedge Cemetery with Rev. Maurice Hitt officiating. Burial will be under the direction of Horne Funeral Home of Gurdon.
Billy M. Nicholson
Billy Morris Nicholson, 75, of Gurdon died April 8, 2001. He was a salesman for business colleges and a member of Calvary United Pentecostal Church. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Douglas Nicholson.
Survivors include: His wife, Carmen Nicholson of Gurdon; a son, Richard W. Nicholson of Porter, Texas; three daughters, Karen Denise Sabban of Clear Lake, Texas, Elizabeth Darnell Riemer of Chicago, Ill., and Sandra Lee Montgomery of Texas City, Texas; a stepson, Dan Peterson of Del Rio, Texas; two stepdaughters, Nina O\'Connell of Gurdon and Linda Sue Riser of Del Rio, Texas; and 21 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Calvary United Pentecostal Church of Gurdon with Rev. Bill O\'Connell officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hedge Cemetery under the direction of Horne Funeral Home of Gurdon.
