Vernon Martin
Vernon James Martin, 60, of Cedarville died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at his home. He was a Baptist, former resident of Fort Smith and truck driver for SDS Transportation in Alma.
Survivors include four daughters, Cindy McCulyea of Oklahoma, Susie Warren of North Carolina, Jamie Brennan of Arizona and Stacie Wilson of Illinois; two sons, James Lee Martin of Arizona and Vernon Edward Martin of Illinois; one sister, Betty Garrett of Cedarville; three half sisters, Marcella Williams of Florida and Margie Links and Ann Jones, both of Fort Smith; one half brother, Carl Elmer Martin of Fort Smith; seven nieces and four nephews.
The body was cremated under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Alma.
Mike Mathis
Mike Velton Mathis, 55, of Van Buren died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, in Mexico City. He was a member of New Vision Worship Center in Van Buren and superintendent for Park-Built Construction in Fort Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Linda; four daughters, Monica and Velta Mathis, both of the home, Michelle McFadden of Cedarville and Leslie Sheffield of Roland; two sisters, Dollie Ruth Helms and Pat Mathis, both of Yazoo City, Miss.; one brother, Bill Mathis of Yazoo City; and three grandchildren, James Velton McFadden and Alice Beth McFadden, both of Cedarville, and Baylee Sheffield of Roland.
Funeral service was held Jan. 10 at New Vision Worship Center in Van Buren. Burial was at Mount McCurry Cemetery in Rudy under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Rick McFadden, James McFadden, Kenneth Winberry, Dale Thompson, Joey Bell and Tom Gibson.
Jerry Thomas
Jerry Neal Thomas, 63, of Fort Smith died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at his home. He was a heavy equipment operator for Arkhola Sand and Gravel, Army veteran and attended Van Buren Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Myra; one daughter, Nancy Logan of Muldrow; one son, Mickey Thomas of Fort Smith; one sister, Frances Barenbery of Alma; one brother, Jimmy Thomas of Alma; and five grandchildren, Bryce Kimes of Alma, Lane Thomas, Zachary Thomas and Summer Dodson, all of Fort Smith, and Bethany Logan of Muldrow.
Graveside service was held Jan. 10 at U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home.
Fred Allen
Fred Rudolph Allen, 74, of Van Buren died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at a local hospital. He was a lifelong resident of Crawford County, member of the First Baptist Church in Van Buren and attended the Gospel Rescue Mission. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Post No. 31. He was a retired employee of Roselawn Cemetery.
Funeral service was held Jan. 8 at Ocker Memorial Chapel in Van Buren. Burial was at Lowes Creek Cemetery, south of Ozark, under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home.
He is survived by his wife, Corrine; four daughters, Shirley Ann Wood of Fort Smith, Mary Gaylon Wells of Rogers, Betty Jo Anthony of Fort Smith and Francis Lee Titsworth of Van Buren; two sons, Fred R. Allen and Billy Ray Allen, both of Cedarville; one brother, Eugene Douglas Allen of Salem, Ore.; 19 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Matt Utz, Mike Fotenopulos, John Martin, Jake Wells, Andy Greenwood, Jackie Foulk, Randal Hicks and Webb Merry. Honorary pallbearers will be David Wells, Phillip Wood and Will Anthony.
Natividad Martinez
Natividad "Tivie" Martinez, 66, of Mountainburg died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2001, at a local hospital. He was a member of Mountainburg First Assembly of God Church and a retired construction worker for the Labor International Union of North America Local No. 107.
Memorial service was held Jan. 6 at the Mountainburg First Assembly of God Church with burial at Pope Cemetery in Mountainburg under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Alma.
He is survived by his wife Nona Martinez; one son, Noe Martinez of Sweeney, Texas; one sister, Juanita Rodriquez of Brownsville, Texas; two brothers, Guillermo "Willie" Martinez and Luis Martinez, both of Brownsville; two grandchildren and nine nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Kenneth Swafford, Daniel Swafford, Nowell Martinez, Boe Dickson, Johnny Taylor and Roy Garrett.
