Elizabeth "Betts" Roth

Elizabeth Ann "Betts" Roth, of Cherokee Village, a retired educator and author, died Feb. 23, 2007, at the age of 87. A long time resident of Cherokee Village Betts was born in Duluth, Minn., on March 19, 1919, the only child of her parents, Ivy N. and Alois T. Roth, now deceased.
After graduating from Miss Wood's School in Minneapolis, Minn., she earned a bachelor's of science degree from George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tenn., and went on to earn a master's of arts degree from Columbia University in New York. For the next five years (1945-50) she taught in the Duluth Public Schools and at the University of Minnesota, Duluth branch.'
During the next 25 years, she established her professional career as an associate professor of early childhood education at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls. She was a member of several professional organizations including Kappa Delta Pi, the National Education Association (NEA) and the American Association of University Professors. During these years she authored several books on early childhood education and penned a number of articles as instructional resources for Iowa's Midland Schools.
After retiring in 1976, she moved to Cherokee Village where she became actively involved as a member of the League of Women Voters, a member of the election board, a charter member of Friends of Homeless Animals, an enthusiastic member of the Great Decisions Group and an involved participant in her community's property owners association.
She is survived by her special friend of many years, Marshall Schools, as well as by other friends and loved ones whose lives she touched in memorable ways.
After cremation, a tombstone will be inscribed in her memory in the Forest Hills cemetery in Duluth, Minn., beside her parents.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Roth Scholarship Fund at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, or to a charity of ones choice. Arrangements were under the direction of the Tri-County Funeral Home of Highland, Ark.
Donald James

Donald James of Horseshoe Bend formerly of Kirksville, Mo., and La Porte, Texas, died at the age of 86 on Feb. 16, 2007, at the North Arkansas Life Care Center in Horseshoe Bend.
He was born Aug. 30, 1920, the son of the late Asa Clifford James and Maggie Marie Shelton James in Adair County, Mo.
He graduated from Brashear High School and served in the U.S. Army Combat Engineers during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart on three occasions.
He enjoyed a life-long career in the construction trade. He owned and operated James Construction while in Kirksville, Mo.
In Kirksville he was active in the Jaycees, Planning and Zoning Committee, Lions Club and served on the building committee of the First United Methodist Church. He worked as the construction superintendent of Wallace Construction in Dallas, Texas and at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. He later served as a Veterans Administration building inspector while living in La Porte, Texas. He retired to Horseshoe Bend in the late 1980s where he was active as a volunteer for the Horseshoe Bend Police Department, a member of the Lions Club and the Horseshoe Bend United Methodist Church.
Survivors are: his third wife, Laraine Heaberlin James; two daughters, Donna Kohl and husband Nick of Quincy Ill., and Debby Risner and husband Marv of La Porte, Texas; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Boyd and Bina James of Brashear, Mo., and Emmett and Norma James of Kirksville, Mo.; Mark VanMeter of Liberty, Mo.; Jayme VanMeter of Springfield, Mo.; Casey Hehr and wife Tara, of Long Beach, Calif.; Lacey Risner of Austin, Texas, and Tyler Risner of San Marcos, Texas; his stepchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife and mother of his daughters, Shirley Slocum James; and his second wife, Marie Hassel James.
No services are scheduled.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Horseshoe Bend Memorial Chapel.
Memorials may be sent to the North Arkansas Life Care Center or to the Horseshoe Bend United Methodist Church.
Casey Lee Herron

Casey Lee Herron, 17, of Cherokee Village, Ark., died Feb. 15, 2007, in Hardy. He was born Dec. 21, 1989, in Batesville the son of David Herron and Trina Evans Womble. He had attended both Highland and Williford schools.
He is survived by: his mother, Trina Womble of Cherokee Village; his father, David Herron of Ozark Acres; his maternal grandmother, Donna Evans of Hardy; five brothers, Benny Joe Leija, Garrett Leija, Zahery Leija, Bruce Womble and Trevor Sitze all of Cherokee Village; one step-brother, Clayton Sitze of Cherokee Village; a very special friend, John Sitze of Cherokee Village; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Verlon Evans; his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A.V. Herron; and his stepmother, Jeanette Beach.
Funeral services were held Feb. 21 at the Tri-County Funeral Home of Highland with Tom Rhoades officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of the Tri-County Funeral Home of Highland.
Bernice Walker Smith

Bernice Walker Smith, 87, of Glencoe died Feb. 20, 2007, at White River Medical Center in Batesville.
She was born Nov. 12, 1919, in Wiseman, the daughter of Alex Hull Walker and Ruth Elizabeth (Morton) Walker.
She married
Lowell Dean Smith, Nov. 23, 1940. She was a homemaker, dairy farmer and a lifetime member of the Assembly of God Church.
She is survived by: a daughter, Donita Henry and husband, Dee of Glencoe; a son, Stevie Smith and wife, Sue of Franklin; a brother, Alex Walker; a sister, Corrine Smith; five grandchildren, Joni Henry Gaskins and husband, Jeff of Glencoe, Jill Henry Smolenski and husband, Robert of Springdale, Dena Henry Barnett and husband, Travis of Glencoe, Jody Smith and wife, Beth of Violet Hill, Rachel Smith Beaver and husband, Chad of Harrison; eleven great-grandchildren, Joseph Gaskins, Erin Gaskins, Nicholas Gaskins, Jessica Jones, Ashley Neal, Tyler Smolenski, Cody Barnett, Kaci Barnett, Haley Beaver, Cole Beaver and Katie Smith; and two great-great-grandchildren, Chloe Taylor and Landon Jones.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lowell Dean Smith; brothers, Norman Walker, Thornton Walker, Milam Walker; and her sisters, Euna Burns, Nadine Sellers, Alverda Blevins, Arline Sellers and Justine Caruthers.
Funeral service were held Feb. 22 at the Roller-Crouch Chapel in Melbourne with Bill Barnett officiating.
Interment was at the Violet Hill cemetery at Violet Hill under the direction of Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Melbourne.
Shirley Yvonne Milligan Wigginton

Shirley Yvonne Milligan Wigginton, age 69, of Grange, Ark., died Feb. 16, 2007, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro. She was born Dec. 25, 1937, at Belmont, Ark., to Finis Ewin and Martha Lottie (Moore) Milligan.
She was united in marriage to John. D. Wigginton on Dec. 6, 1957, in Albion, Mich. She was a homemaker, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Grange, Calamine Fire Department, the Ladies Thursday Morning Bowling League at the Hollywood Bowl in Batesville and a member of the Milligan Campground Presbyterian Church near Strawberry. She attended the Corinth Baptist Church in Grange where she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; paternal grandparents, Harm Lee and Margaret Milligan; maternal grandparents, Wes and Alta Moore and one brother, Terry Milligan.
Survivors include: her husband, John D. Wigginton of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Debbie Milligan of Grange, Lee and Zana Milligan of Grange; one brother, Steve Milligan of Cave City; six grandchildren, Ashley and husband Jacob Landers of Little Rock, David Wigginton Jr. of Fayetteville, Austin Wigginton, Aaron Wigginton, Amber Wigginton and Joshua Wigginton all of Grange; several nieces; and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Feb. 19 at the Milligan Campground Presbyterian Church near Strawberry with Bro. Dennis Gay and Bro. Alan Meinzer officiating. Burial followed in the Milligan Campground cemetery near Strawberry with arrangements by Qualls Funeral Home of Cave City.
Paul Russell Nau

Paul Russell Nau, 92, of Topsham, Maine died Feb. 4, 2007, at Amenity Manor.
He was born in Burlington, Iowa on Sept. 29, 1914, a son of Russell W. Nau and Bessie (Headley) Nau.
He attended Burlington High School and graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in mechanical engineering.
He married
Beatrice Louise Nau in Milwaukee, Wis. on May 28, 1949.
After a brief period during which he managed the family farm in Iowa, Nau went to work for Wisconsin Motors in Milwaukee. Later, he worked for Clinton Engines Corporation in Maquoketa, Iowa, and for Briggs and Stratton Corporation in Milwaukee. He specialized in the design of carburetion and fuel systems for air-cooled gasoline engines, and was the inventor of several patents. He retired with his wife to Cherokee Village.
Nau was a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, the Danville Lodge, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Lions Club and the United Methodist Church. He enjoyed golf, was an avid investor, and throughout his life worked in partnership with his brother, Donald, to maintain operation of the family farm in Danville, Iowa.
He was predeceased by his wife, Beatrice, in June, 2006.
Surviving are: his son, Paul A. Nau, and daughter-in-law, Luanna Nau, of Brunswick, Maine; his brother, Donald G. Nau of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and his grandchildren, George and Charles Nau.
Services will be held at a later date in Milwaukee, Wis. Arrangements were by the Brackett Funeral Home, of Brunswick, Maine.
