Bill Driver (William Fondren Driver, Jr)

Bill Driver, a local stained-glass maker, artist and craftsman, record-setting swimmer, and pilot for the Navy during the Vietnam War, died at his home near Oark, last Wednesday, August 26, 2009. He was 67 and was diagnosed with secondary liver cancer this spring.

The oldest of five brothers-all competitive swimmers-Bill spent his early years in Redmond, Washington then moved to Walnut Lake in Michigan for middle and high school and attended Michigan State University. In 1960, Bill set the American Record for the 100-yard breaststroke. He earned All American recognition 1960-63.

As a naval pilot, Bill served in Vietnam, lived in the Philippines, and in England. A Lieutenant Commander when he left the service, Bill then returned to the Detroit area where he owned and ran a local aviation charter business.

In 1976, Bill and three of his four brothers with their wives and children, as part of a “back to the land movement, ” settled on a beautiful farm on the Little Mulberry River, where they designed and built their own houses. Over the past 33 years Bill and his wife Karen have become deeply tied to their community.

Creativity, physical vitality, a spirit of independence, and a sense of humor have defined Bill’s life. His stained glass can be seen locally at the Post Familie Vineyard and Winery in Altus and at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Clarksville. His talent for rockwork can be seen in the walls and structures surrounding his house as well as pillars here and there throughout the area. Bill also built furniture, played the piano, guitar, and painted-acrylics, oils, and watercolors (the last which he learned from Lucille Murphy of Clarksville). Never one for a 9 to 5 job, Bill has been self-employed for many years, most recently in real-estate renovation.

Perhaps most defining of all is Bill ’s lifelong romance and partnership with his wife Karen, a schoolteacher at Oark Public School for 26 years, retired this year. They have known each other since middle school, and have shared 43 years of marriage, adventures, dreams, and raising their three kids. Erin Driver-Linn, director of institutional research at Harvard University, lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts with her husband Robert Linn, an architect, and their 6-year old son Jackson. Jason Driver, a musician, lives in Portland, Oregon, with his wife Mina Nguyen-Driver, a pediatric neuropsychologist, and their 3-year old son Miles and 1-year old daughter Lila. Brahm Driver, a civil engineer, and his wife Amanda Sobel Driver, who just finished graduate work in museum education, moved back home last week from Boston, Massachusetts.

The family invites friends and loved ones to a memorial service to celebrate Bill’s life, to be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 3rd, on Bill and Karen’s Little Mulberry Creek property, Johnson County Road 5099. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made for a scholarship to be awarded to a creative, well-rounded student from Oark, Arkansas (send contributions c/o William Driver Scholarship Fund, Oark Public School, Highway 215, Oark, AR 72852).
