Robert C. Hughes

Robert C. (R. C.) Hughes, 89, of Clarksville died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2007, at his home.
A native of Winchester, Tenn., he was a son of the late William Nathan and Dovie Lee Hall Hughes, Navy veteran of World War II, member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, Little Rock VFW, and Rhode Island Masonic Lodge, volunteer at the Veterans Hospital in Little Rock for 16 years, and was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Inez Alexander Hughes.
He is survived by one daughter, Roberta Gill and husband, Jeff, of Clarksville; one son, Roger Powell and wife, Jean, of Pine Bluff; two sisters, Vernie Mencer of Lake Village and Susie Derden of Sherrill; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16, at Hardwicke Funeral Chapel with Rev. Leon Barnes officiating.
Grandsons served as pallbearers.
The body was cremated.

Tonya Dixon Lavender

Tonya Dixon Lavender, 38, of Euless, Texas, granddaughter of Harvey Severn and Bruce Dixon, both of London, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2007.
She was a native of Russellville, graduate of Spiro (Oklahoma) High School, and was preceded in death by her father, Billy Dixon; grandmothers, Myrtle Armstrong and Juanita Phillips.
Survivors include her husband, Mark Lavender; three daughters, Wendy Dixon, and Donna and Emily Lavender of Euless, Texas; one granddaughter, Kamryn Williams of Euless, Texas; mother, Winnie Pipkins; brother, Mike Storment of Big Ceder, Okla.; grandfather, John Armstrong of Gentry; nephew, Wes Storment of Panama, Okla.; uncle and aunt, George and Carol Severn of Gentry; and aunts, Mary Williams of Greenwood and Anna Hays of Las Vegas, Nev.
A memorial service was held Sunday, Nov. 18, at Amalla Funeral Home in Fort Worth, Texas.

Burley W. King

Burley W. King, 91, of Clarksville died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, at Johnson Regional Medical Center.
He is survived by his wife, Billie King; two sons, Rev. Burnett King of Clarksville and Robert King of Van Buren; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, 2007, at the Harmony Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Harmony cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, at Hardwicke Funeral Home.

Belva Gayle Gregory

Belva Gayle Gregory, 87, of Clarksville died Friday, Nov. 23, 2007, at Johnson Regional Medical Center.
She was of the Pentecostal faith, daughter of the late George Harrison and Miranda Ellen Harris Seals, widow of Ezekiel Gregory, and was preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Lyndel Cox and Dennis Steele; one daughter-in-law, Theresa Gregory; one granddaughter, Stephanie Pearson; one grandson, Lyndel Gregory Cox; three sisters; and three brothers.
She is survived by five daughters, Shirley Acord and husband, Bob, of Farmington; Jean Core and husband, Dan, of Paris, Carolyn Yates and husband, Gary, of Oark, and Marilyn Pearson and husband, Steve, and Lynn Steele, all of Clarksville; three sons, Wayne Gregory and wife, Tricia, and Larry Gregory and wife, Judy, all of Clarksville, and Gary Gregory and wife, Diana, of Hunt; 17 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral was at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, at the Yale Church with Rev. Terry Schlinker officiating.
Burial was in Yale cemetery under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers were Mark Yates, Matt Yates, Geoff Gregory, Brad Pearson, Eric Gregory, Jamie Gregory, Steve Boyd, and Marty Lowrey.
Honorary pallbearers were Anthony Acord, Brock Boyd, Jess Jordan, and Seth Schubarth.

Betty M. Hutchins

Betty Morgan Hutchins, 68, of Magazine died Friday, Nov. 23, 2007.
A native of Coal Hill, she was a daughter of the late Hanford Thomas (Bo) and Marie Louise Fultz Morgan, member of Crossroads Assembly of God Church in Clarksville, and was preceded in death by two sons, Wayne and Bryan Williams.
Survivors include her husband, Roy Hutchins; three daughters, Brenda Hudson of Clarksville, and Karen Yeager and Harlene Thompson, both of Dardanelle; five sons, Mike Williams of Clarksville, and Ricky Williams, Ronnie Williams, Larry Williams, and Jack Scott, all of Magazine; one stepdaughter, Connie Adams of Fort Smith; two stepsons, Danny Hutchins of Fort Smith and Ronnie Hutchins of Lavaca; four sisters, Susie Morgan of Coal Hill, and Gladys Pelham, Debbie Marvel and Kathy King, all of Clarksville; four brothers, Junior Morgan, Gary Morgan, Jerry Morgan and Billy Morgan, all of Coal Hill; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral was at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at the Jamestown Assembly of God Church with burial in Hartman cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Smith Mortuary of Charleston.
Family members served as pallbearers.

Burley Walter King

Burley Walter King, 91, of Clarksville died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2007, at Johnson Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 18, 1916, to Walter John and Eva Johnson King, he was a grandson of a pioneer Johnson County family. He grew up in the Harmony community and was a lifelong member of Harmony Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher and elder. He was a graduate of Clarksville High School and an alumnus of the College (University) of the Ozarks. He had a long-term ministry with the Ozarks Area Mission and served as a lay preacher at Spring Hill, Liberty Hill, Coal Hill, Elkins, Hopewell and Dardanelle. He conducted more than 100 funerals, some as recently as 2006, and countless decoration services throughout Johnson County.
He began his teaching career in one-room schoolhouses in Bluff Springs, Fort Douglas, Dillen and Montana before serving as teacher and superintendent of the Ozone school. He later served in the same capacity in Rondo (Lee County) and Carden Bottom (Yell County). Following his career in education, he served as Director of the Department of Human Services of Johnson, Pope and Yell counties and as Area Supervisor of several counties and a federal auditor.
He was active in the community and served as president of the Clarksville Kiwanis Club, the College (University) of the Ozarks Alumni Association and the Johnson County Boys Club and as chairman of the Johnson County Hospital Board. He was also a member of the Clarksville Parks and Recreation Board. During his tenure as president of the Kiwanis Club, the organization began the Clarksville High School athletic banquet, which has become an annual event.
A devoted Christian with an irrepressible sense of humor and a gift of gab, he loved spending time with his family, walking through town, drinking coffee with friends, learning state and local history and exploring the countryside with his wife, children and grandchildren. He loved the Harmony and Lone Pine communities and enjoyed working on his farm at Lone Pine. He was the author of three books, Harmony: The Golden Years, Our Family: The Early Years, and Swinging Bridges and a Rope Ladder, which were later compiled into one volume, Memories That Bless and Burn.
He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Billie Burnett King; two sons and daughters-in-law, Burnett and Sharon King of Clarksville and Bob and Linda King of Van Buren; one grandson, Scott King and wife Lorna of Mablevale; six granddaughters, Carol French and husband Joey of Shreveport, La., Carla Young and husband Matt of Bella Vista, Christy Collins and husband Jason of Clarksville, Laura King of Rogers, Janice Penix and husband Sterling of Clarksville, and Audrey Nowotny and husband Matt of Cedarville; seven great-grandchildren, Sarah King, John Collins, Jared King, Joshua Nowotny, Hayden Penix, Caleb Nowotny and Vin Young; one sister, Marie Nimmo of Pasadena; two nieces; and numerous other family members.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at Harmony Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Burnett King, Rev. Bob King, Rev. Scott King and Rev. Tracy Julian officiating. Burial was in Harmony cemetery under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Scott King, Joey French, Jason Collins, Sterling Penix, Matt Nowotny and Carl Traylor.
Memorials may be made to the Gideons International, P.O. Box 140800, Nashville, TN 37214-0800; to Harmony Presbyterian Church; or to a designated scholarship fund for education majors at the University of the Ozarks, ATTN: Burley King Scholarship.

David E. Ogden

David E. (Davy) Ogden, 42, of Carthage, Mo., died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2007, at Johnson Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Carthage, Mo., musician, and member of the New River Ministries of Carthage, Mo.
Survivors include his wife, Melody Cochran Ogden; three sons, Kylee Joeseph Ogden, Johnathan Edward Ogden, and Ellis Faubion Ogden, all of the home; parents, David and Mary Odgen of Carthage, Mo.; one sister, Cheryl Pugh of Carthage, Mo.; two nieces and one nephew, Randi, Rachel and Walker, all of Carthage, Mo.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Graveside services and burial were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, at Wanda cemetery south of Stella, Mo., under the direction of Ulmer Funeral Home.

Floyd Olan Fox

Floyd Olan Fox, 86, of Lamar died Friday, Nov. 23, 2007, at the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences of Little Rock.
He was a Windsor Door employee, baptized member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Clarksville, member of the local VFW, decorated World War II veteran and was the recipient of the Victory Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, European, African and Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and two Overseas Bars. He was a son of the late Cam and Annabelle Schavers Fox and was preceded in death by two brothers; three sisters; and one grandson.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Fox; three daughters, Gail Haggard of Grants Pass, Ore., Jeanette Deer of Elma, Wash., and Brenda Renee Fox of Russellville; one son, Floyd Alan Fox of Eugene, Ore.; numerous grandchildren including Adam Bagsby of Clarksville and Ashley Melson of Russellville; and numerous great-grandchildren.
The body was cremated.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at Roller-Cox Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Ross Sawyer officiating.
