Donald Glenn Morse
Donald Glenn Morse, 70, of Austin passed away peacefully on Monday, September 17, 2007, at his home with his family at his bedside. A memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 21, 2007, at Harrell Funeral Home followed by burial at Forest Oaks Memorial Park in Oak Hill. Visitation was held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, September 20, 2007.
Mr. Morse was born on July 16, 1937, in the Old Brackenridge Hospital in Austin. He grew up in Austin and Odessa, and attended Austin High School. His family moved to the Flatrock community near Russellville, Arkansas, when he was a teenager. He was a 1955 graduate of Lamar High School in nearby Lamar, Arkansas. After graduating, he served two years in the United States Army Reserves. After discharge, he joined the Air Force. He was stationed at Fairford Air Force Base in Gloustershire, England, which had been transferred to the United States during the Cold War. He served on Fairford's aircraft fire and rescue team. While there, he met and married
the former Margot Ward of Cheltenham, Gloustershire, on October 15, 1960. After five years of service in the Air Force, they returned to Arkansas.
A few years later, Don and Margot moved their young family to Austin to manage, and later own, the Bel Air Motel on South Congress Avenue. After selling the Bel Air, he continued to own and manage apartments in South Austin until he retired in 2001. Don also worked for several years for Yarlings Department Stores as the downtown warehouse manager.
Don was a devoted husband and father. He had a natural inclination for mechanics, building construction, and crafts. Through the years, Don enjoyed morning coffee with friends and fishing of Lake LBJ, but most important to him was his family. He and Margot were married
for 47 loving years. He was an honest and straightforward man, and leaves his children and grandchildren a legacy of strong family values, honest work and steadfast devotion.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, William Donald and Bethel Hollis Morse, and sister, Helen Elmore.
He is survived by his wife, Margot Morse; daughter and son-in-law, Kerry and Garry Gore of College Station; sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Shana Morse of Dripping Springs and David and Melanie Morse of Alvin; grandchildren, Amy and Lindsey Gore, Cale and Jensen Morse and Jordan Morse; sister and brother-in-law, Oleta and Steve Tillman of Flatrock community, Arkansas, and twin sister, Donna Glennell Underwood of McGregor; brothers-in-law, Bob Ward and wife, Sue, and Mick Blakeley, all of Cheltenham; sister-in-law, Diana Peacey of Churchdown, Gloustershire; aunts, Ella Morse, of Lextington and Rozell Franks of Lockhart; and numerous relatives and friends.
Our family wishes to thank Dr. Thomas Tucker and his staff for their guidance and care during treatment, the wonderful staff of Hospice Austin and Christopher House, and especially Diane Flood, RN, and Daisy Calderon for their exceptional compassion and care for Don at home.
