Leroy A. Lukins II
Leroy Albert Lukins II, 35, of Liberty Mounds, Okla., died April 11, 2009, in Clarksville from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident.
He was a native of Forrest City, son of the late Leroy Lukins, plumber employed by All-American Plumbing, little league coach, Christian, and was preceded in death by one brother, Clarence.
Survivors include his wife, Karla Beth Askins Lukins; two sons Tylor C. Lukins of Clarksville and Jordan Ryan of the home; one stepson, Tyler Gattis of the home; mother, Janet Harmon of Clarksville; one sister, Glenda Lukins of Clarksville; one brother, Cecil Lukins of Clarksville; two sisters-in-law, Angel Askins of Tulsa, Okla., and Kay Hibbs of Subiaco; and one brother-in-law, Ronnie Askins of Subiaco.
Funeral was Tuesday, April 14, at Jubilee Worship Center in Tulsa, Okla. The body was cremated under the direction of Midtown Chapel in Tulsa, Okla.
Mary I. Volentine
Mary Irene Volentine, 95, of Clarksville died Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at her home.
She was a native of Webb City, daughter of the late Lee Preston and Francis Amanda Brown Price, widow of William Travis Volentine, member of the First United Methodist Church in Clarksville and a Mustard Seed volunteer, and preceded in death by one son, Carroll Dean Volentine and wife, Jo Ann; one brother, Marvin Price; and one sister, Frances Wayne Price.
She is survived by two sisters, Ellen Sharp of Charleston and Oma Lee Armstrong of Atlanta, Ga.; three grandchildren, Joe Dean and wife, Marjorie Valentine of Kingsport, Tenn., and Mary Louise and husband, Clay Freels, and Bobbie Jean Dyer, all of Knoxville, Tenn.; and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services and burial were at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at Oakland cemetery with Rev. David Hanshaw officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.
Mattie Mozelle Atkins
Mattie Mozelle Atkins, 83, of Ozone died Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at her home.
She was a native of Ozone, daughter of the late Jack and Lillian (Bump) Melson, retired school cook, member of Ozone Baptist Church, and was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Turner; and four brothers, Paul, Elzie, C. W. and Virgil Melson.
Survivors include her husband, Ollen Atkins; two sons, Jerry Atkins of Ozone and Jesse Atkins of Paso Robles, Calif.; two brothers, Doyle Melson of Clarksville and Eugene Melson of Ozone; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral was at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 18, at the Ozone Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Sawyer officiating.
Burial was in Mt. Airy cemetery under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers were David Melson, Rickey Melson, Mike Melson, Steve Melson, Matthew Atkins, and Dejuan Turner.
Honorary pallbearers were Wesley Kendrick, Darren Turner and Randall Atkins.
William Carroll Bumpers
William Carroll Bumpers died in Phoenix, Arizona on April 13, 2009. He was born November 17, 1921 to the late W. R. and Lattie Jones Bumpers in Charleston, Arkansas, where he graduated from high school and was valedictorian of his class.
He was the husband of Catherine Rogers Bumpers, a native of Clarksville, Arkansas, and the father of Bruce Bumpers, who predeceased him, Dr. Paula Bumpers, a veterinarian in Denver, Colorado, and Donna Bumpers Kelly (Chris), who resides in Phoenix. He was the brother of former Arkansas Governor and U. S. Senator Dale Bumpers, and the late Margaret Ware Kahliff, founder of a vending company based in Ohio and later a member of the board of U. S. Export-Import Bank.
Carroll graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1943 and went into the U. S. Army, where he served for three years, much of it in the European Theater. He returned to the University of Arkansas, where he received a Masters Degree, and then attended Harvard Law School and graduated in 1951 with an LLB degree. He then joined the legal staff of Standard Oil of California, and from there successively went to several large leasing firms. He moved to Phoenix with his family in 1972 and was President of Greyhound Leasing and Finance Corp. He then became a group Vice President of the Dial Corp. and retired while at FINOVA.
Carroll served on the Advisory Board of the First Commercial Bank in Little Rock, AR for several years. He was an active and long-time member of the Phoenix First United Methodist Church where a memorial service was held on Monday, April 20, at 2 p.m.
Billy Edward Spicer
Billy Edward Spicer, 62, of Scranton died Monday, May 4, 2009, in Paris.
A native of Scranton, he was a son of the late Hassel Spicer, and was employed as a heavy equipment operator for the county and a store manager for several years.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Rosetta Floren Spicer; one son, Jamie Spicer and wife, Jami, of Scranton; one daughter, Shelley Turner and husband, Paul, of Scranton; mother, Ocie Knight Spicer of Paris; and two sisters, Grace Fholer and Margie Core, both of Tulsa, Okla.
Funeral was at 2 p.m. Friday, May 8, at Roller Funeral Home Chapel in Paris followed by burial at McKendree cemetery in Subiaco.
Active pallbearers were Lyndall Rogers, Tim Moffet, Earnie Mellon, Roy Houser, Troy Houser, and Tony Schluterman.
Honorary pallbearers were Jerry Koerdt, Ryan Wilson, T. J. Pridgin and Paul Turner.
Clara Bachus Blackwell
Clara Bachus Blackwell, 81, of Clarksville died Tuesday, May 5, 2009, at Clarksville Health and Rehab.
She was a native of Lamar, daughter of the late William and Katie Gompf Kreipke, widow of Norman (Woody) Bachus, Baptist, and preceded in death by one granddaughter, Beverly Bewley; one sister; and four brothers.
Survivors include her husband, Earl Blackwell; two daughters, Linda Garrett of Gainesville, Texas, and Jane Little of Clarksville; one son, Leon Bachus of Lamar; two sisters, Dora Smith of Los Angeles, Calif., and Irene Tanner of Wichita, Kan.; two stepchildren, John Blackwell of Decatur, Ill., and Kay Peace of Camp Verde, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral was at 10 a.m. Friday, May 8, at Roller-Cox Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bob Oden officiating. Burial was in Holman cemetery.
Pallbearers were Darrell Clubb, Leo Knoernschild, Terry D. Miller, Buddy Smith, Clyde Patterson, and Jeff Wood.
Dennis W. Young
Dennis W. Young, 59, of Clarksville died Wednesday, May 6, 2009, at Little Rock.
He was a member of the Clarksville Church of Christ and son of the late Bill and Adean Dunlap Young.
Survivors include his wife, Sandra Metzker Young; two daughters, Jessica Bartlett and husband, Dustin, of Clarksville and Jennifer Webb and husband, Coley, of Ozone; one son, Jason Young of Clarksville; one sister, Donna Bean of Cottonwood, Ariz.; three nephews, Terry Young, Todd Bean, and Tim Bean; and two uncles, Edd Young and Ted Young.
Funeral was at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 9, at the Clarksville Church of Christ with John Ballard officiating.
Burial was in Woodland cemetery under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers were Coley Webb, Terry Brandenburg, Craig Dollar, Terry Young, Raymond Holt, and Mike Bosold.
Honorary pallbearers were Ted Young and Edd Young.
Doke Memorial
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 16, at the Lone Pine cemetery for J. Doy Doke and his son, Dan W. Doke. All who wish to attend are welcome.
Eula Mae Hill
Eula Mae Stewart Hill, 78, of Springdale died Sunday, May 3, 2009, at Fayetteville.
She was born in Oark to George W. and Susie Mayfield Stewart, member of House of Worship in Hindsville, and retired from Danaher Tool Group in 1992. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Norma Martin; one sister, Vickie Sue Mitchell; one granddaughter, Teresa Ann Beck; and three great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, J. C. Hill; one daughter, Oma Long and husband, Dennis, of Springdale; two sons, T. J. Hill of Springdale and David Hill and wife, Nancy, of Winslow; seven sisters, Euca Faye Easterley of Hiwasse, Ruby Morris of Ontario, Calif., Maudie Acord and Linna Kay Mobbs, both of Batson, Wilma Vae Adams of Ozone, Judy Burns of Joplin, Mo., and Mary Russell of Fallsville; two brothers, George Stewart of Springdale and Bobby Stewart of Elkins; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral was at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 7, at Westfield Chapel with Rev. Bill Williams officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens in Fayetteville.
Active pallbearers were Darrell Long, Jeff Meadors, J. T. Hill, Ray Dean Hill, John Cambron, and Scott Hill.
Honorary pallbearers were Justin Bryant and Jacob Hill.
