MAVIS ESTELLE HENRY
Mavis Henry, age 87, of Stamps, Arkansas, passed away Monday, January 23, 2012, in Farmers Branch, Texas. She was born in Magnolia, Arkansas, on August 30, 1924, the only child of Bessie and Aurelius Rogers. She was the dearly loved wife of the late Dr. George W. Henry. Mavis Henry was known and loved by many, having taught high school for 30 years, first in Taylor, Arkansas, and then at Stamps High School. She was respected in the region for her work with her students, involvement in community activities, and dedication to the local Methodist Church. She faced life with kindness and honor, and positively touched the lives of all of those who met her. She intended to be here for 100 years, but made the most of the 87 that she spent with us.
She is survived by four daughters; Carla Henry McIntosh of Farmers Branch, TX; Susan Wilhite and husband, Wil of Mountain Home, AR; Kaye Minter and husband, Bill of Buckner, AR; and Krista Griffin and husband, Vernon of Bussy, AR; grandchildren, Doug and Judy Fore; Lauren and Brent Bowles; Hank Fore; Garett Wilhite; Kelly and James Schneider; Emily Minter; Lara Minter; Erin Minter; Darren and Krystal Phillips; and Dillon Phillips; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Joely Fore; Elison, Cora and Danner Bowles; Jadyn and Spencer Fore; and Skylir and Cole Phillips all of whom adored and respected their Grammi.
Funeral Services will be held at 10 am Saturday, January 28, 2012, at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Stamps, AR, with Dr. Raymond Cammack officiating. Burial will follow at Frazier Cemetery in Magnolia, AR. Visitation will be 6-8 pm Friday, January 27, 2012, at the Smith Funeral Home in Stamps, AR. JAMES LOUIE SMITH, M.D.
James Louie Smith, M.D., age 94, of Little Rock, Arkansas, went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 30, 2012. God truly blessed him with an abundant life. He was born in Magnolia, Arkansas, in 1917, the son of Parks Mathews Smith, M.D. and Lillie Buffington Smith. He was the third of their four sons. At an early age he enjoyed helping out in his father’s medical clinic. He received his premedical training at Magnolia Agricultural and Mechanical College, now Southern Arkansas University. He graduated from the University of Arkansas School of Medicine in 1941. He then did an internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, followed by a residency in ophthalmology at New Orleans Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital at Tulane University. In 1945, Dr. Smith returned to Little Rock with his bride, Dede Dabbs Smith, establishing his practice in ophthalmology. In 1946, he joined the Voluntary Faculty of the University of Arkansas School of Medicine as Clinical Instructor working in the Isaac Folsom Clinic and continued as a valuable member of the Voluntary Faculty and held the rank of Clinical Professor. He played an important role in the development and approval of the first residency training program in ophthalmology in Arkansas. He practiced ophthalmology in Little Rock until 1996. He was a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Association of Ophthalmology. He has served as a member of the House of Delegate’s of the Arkansas Medical Society and as Chief of Staff of the Baptist Medical Center. He was active in work for the vocational rehabilitation of persons handicapped by physical disabilities. He was prominent in the organization of the Arkansas Chapter of the National Rehabilitation Association and served as its president. The Southwest Regional Rehabilitation Association awarded him a citation for outstanding service to the disabled of Arkansas. He was a loving husband and father. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and served as a deacon. He was blessed by many years in Bible Study Fellowship and Community Bible Study where he served as a core leader and helped begin the Little Rock Evening Community Bible Study. The love of the Christians in both church and Bible Study was a great blessing especially in his later years. He loved hunting and fishing and was an avid bow hunter and hunted with Ben Pearson.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dede Dabbs Smith; five children; Sara Roberson and husband, Mike of Little Rock, AR; Mariruth Borden of Hawley, PA; Louise Hobbs and husband, Ted of El Dorado, AR; Julia Ann Post and husband, Robert of North Little Rock, AR; and James W.R. Smith and wife, Jody of Qing Dao, China; thirteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 pm Thursday, February 2, 2012, at Immanuel Baptist Church, 501 North Shackleford with Dr. Gary Hollingsworth officiating under the direction of Smith Funeral Homes of Stamps, AR. Visitation will be 6-8 pm Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at Roller-Chenal, 13801 Chenal Parkway. BETTY CAROLYN COOK HARRISON
Dr. Betty Harrison, PhD, age 73, of Magnolia, Arkansas, passed away Tuesday, January 31, 2012. Dr. Harrison was born January 11, 1939, in Cale, Arkansas, to Denver Gaston Cook and Minnie Haddox Cook. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Magnolia, AR, and a retired LSU professor.
Dr. Harrison was a member of the following: Phi Kappa Phi, Ioda Lambda Sigma, Kappa Delta Kappa, Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Kappa Ioda, Gamma Sigma Delta (Honorary); American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Education, Louisiana Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Education, National Association for Career and Technical Education, Louisiana Association for Career and Technical Education, Texas A&M Former Student Association, Professor and Former Director of School of Human Resource Education and Workforce Development; Platinum Edition of Who’s Who Registry Worldwide. Dr. Betty C. Harrison was endowed with a Graduate Fellowship by an anonymous donor in her name.
Dr. Harrison was preceded in death by her parents; one brother and one sister.
She is survived by her husband, David B. Harrison; her son, Jerry David Harrison of Azle, TX; her daughter, Phyllis Harrison Bennett and husband, William Charles of Houston TX; her grandchildren, Paul David Bennett of Columbus, GA; and Lynley Nicole Bennett of Houston, TX.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 am Saturday, February 4, 2012, at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Stamps, AR, with Bro. Joe Brown and Bro. David Watkins officiating. Burial will follow at Ebenezer Cemetery in Bluff City, AR. Pallbearers will be Steve McAteer, Gary McAteer, Donald Ray Beaver, Larry Beaver, Donald Young, Rob Wright, Raymond Whitehead, Mike Whitehead, Michael Mayton, Joe Kotrlik, Steve Scallon, and Jeremy Souter. Mr. Charles Wray Gilkey
Mr. Charles Wray Gilkey, 66yrs, of Olean, NY, formerly of Stamps, AR, passed away February 8th in Presby Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA.
He was born March 22, 1945 in Stamps, AR to George and Annie Mae Loudermill-Gilkey.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Charles Gilkey, Jr, his siblings; William, Curtis, Burnis, Dorothy Gilkey, & Ruth Williams., Grandmother; Rose Loudermill.
Survivors include; his wife Janice Gilkey, three children; Charleston & Annie Mae Gilkey (Olean, NY), Charrae Johnson (Erie, PA), two step-children; Jason Nobles (Erie, PA) & Jeremy App (Olean, NY). His siblings; Terry, George & Robert Gilkey (Erie, PA), Cynthia Gilkey (Stamps), Rev. Otis Gilkey (Vallejo, CA), Raymond Gilkey, Sr (Magnolia, AR), Dennis Gilkey (Cleveland, TX), Linda Gilkey (Los Angeles, CA). (18) Grandchildren & (1) great-grandchild.
Funeral service will be held Thursday, February 16th, at 1:00 p.m. at Smith Chapel (First Street) in Stamps, with burial to follow in the Lakeside Cemetery.
Officiating will be Rev. Otis Gilkey.
Visitation: Wednesday from 11:a.m. until 4:p.m.
EARLINE KING LYNN
Earline King Lynn, age 93, of Taylor, Arkansas, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2012. Ms. Lynn was born April 30, 1918, in Bodcaw, Arkansas, to Luther M. Thompson and Mauda Bryan Thompson.
Ms. Lynn was preceded in death by her parents; three sons, Buddy King, Wendell King and Louie King; two daughters, Patricia Nichols and Lanette Dozier; twelve brothers and sisters; three grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
She is survived by two daughter-in-laws; one sister-in-law; eleven grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; twenty-nine great great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 am Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at the Community Church of Taylor, AR, formally known as Taylor Assembly of God; with Rev. G.R. Collier, Rev. Darrell Cooper, Rev. Bill Stroud, and Rev. John R. Heth officiating under the direction of Smith Funeral Homes of Stamps, AR. Burial will be at Forest Grove Cemetery in Taylor, AR. ETTA LURENE PIERCE
Etta Lurene Pierce, age 92, of Buckner, Arkansas, passed away Thursday, February 9, 2012, at her home. Mrs. Pierce was born November 9, 1919, in Falcon, Arkansas, to Robert McKamie and Retha Cox McKamie. She was a member of Falcon Church of Christ for 80 years. Mrs. and Mr. Pierce were the operators of J.W. Pierce Grocery; well known for their steaks far and wide.
Mrs. Pierce was preceded in death by her parents; her spouse, J.W. Pierce; her daughter, Sharon Pierce Owen; her brothers, Edward McKamie and Denton McKamie; and sister, Evelene McKamie.
She is survived by her brothers, Wallace McKamie of Borger, TX, and Donald McKamie and wife, Betty of Falcon, AR; son-in-law, Gary Owen of Chicago, IL; sister-in-law, Francis McKamie of Falcon, AR; grandson, Jeffery Owen of Chicago, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside Services will be 2 pm Saturday, February 11, 2012, at Falcon Cemetery with Bro. David Nicholas officiating under the direction of Smith Funeral Homes of Stamps, AR. Visitation will be 5-7 pm Friday, February 10, 2012, at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Stamps, AR.
JAMES BARRY BRIGHT
James Bright, age 65, of Lewisville, Arkansas, passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2012. Mr. Bright was born March 1, 1946, in Hope, Arkansas, to Barrett Bright and Avis Bright Redmon.
Mr. Bright was preceded in death by his parents; step father, Sam Redmon; his brother, Billy Bright; and his sister, Kay Strange.
He is survived by his son, James Bright and wife, Emily of Texarkana, AR; daughter, Angie Barton Rickert and husband, Steven of Lewisville, AR; brothers, Barret Bright of Cyprus, TX; and Bailey Bright of Lewisville, AR; grandchildren, Easton Bright and Jackson Barton.

JAMES EARL REDMON
James Earl Redmon, age 89, of Lewisville, Arkansas, passed away Monday, January 23, 2012. Mr. Redmon was born January 10, 1923, in Cress City, Arkansas, to Reginald Ryan Redmon and Maggie Nunn Redmon. He married Lee Odessar Sinclair in 1945. Mr. Redmon was the owner of Redmon’s Grocery and a member of Lewisville Church of Christ.
Mr. Redmon was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lee Odessar Redmon; infant son, Otis Wayne Redmon; son, James Lee Redmon; daughter, Judy Chandler; two brothers and one sister.
He is survived by his daughter, Edna Estes and husband, Jerry of Lewisville, AR; daughter-in-law, Nita Redmon of Lewisville, AR; son-in-law, Gene Chandler of Lewisville, AR; ten grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
