James Rachel
James E. “Sonny” Rachel, 56, of Russellville died Sunday, March 2, 2008, at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center.
He was born
Sept. 8, 1951, at Russellville to James Erwin and Hettie Rachel. He was employed at Cogswell Motors, Inc., a U.S. Army veteran and attended First Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Becky Rachel of Russellville; a daughter and son-in-law, Brooke-Allison and Mark Taylor of Russellville; a son and daughter-in-law, James and Kayla Rachel of Russellville; his parents, James and Hettie Rachel of Russellville; two brothers, Paul Rachel of Dover and David Rachel of Russellville; two sisters, Patti Craig of Kingston, Tenn., and Carole Muncy of Russellville; a grandson, Jackson Taylor of Russellville; and several nephews and nieces.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2008, at the First Church of the Nazarene in Russellville with the Rev. Ira Taylor and Rev. Brian Jones officiating. Burial will be in Booher Cemetery
at Russellville under the direction of Shinn Funeral Service.
Pallbearers will be Ed Schwartz, Ken Langford, Mike Brafford, Tommy Hindsman, Sam Hindsman and Kiah Gardner.
Honorary pallbearers will be the employees of Cogswell Motors.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Vestal Chronister
Vestal Elvina Duvall Chronister, 90, of Russellville, was called home to heaven Monday, March 3, 2008.
She was born
Oct. 16, 1917, at Gumlog, to the Rev. John Garland and Susie Amanda Davis Duvall. She married
Woodrow Wilson Chronister on June 19, 1937, and was married
for 51 years. She attended the Pine Hill Community Church and was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a daughter, Linda Pullen; a son-in-law, Bert Phillips; two brothers; seven sisters; a half-brother; and two half-sisters.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Fannie Phillips of Russellville and Geneva George and her husband Thurman Jr. of Mountain View; a son-in-law, Jimmy Pullen of Dover; five grandchildren, Michelle and Michael Phillips, both of Russellville, Brian Pullen of Fayetteville, Renee George of Sheridan and Christopher George of Mountain View; a great-granddaughter, Paige Phillips of Russellville; two half-sisters, Jewel Harris of Little Rock and Bonnie Hill of Russellville; and numerous nephews and nieces.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at the Shinn Chapel with the Rev. Ron Chenault officiating. Burial will be in Shady Grove Cemetery
near Atkins under the direction of Shinn Funeral Service.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Chronister, Jerry Taylor, Jimmy Pullen, Brian Pullen, Christopher George and Michael Phillips.

Lavan Whorton
Loving husband, father and adoring grandfather, W. Lavan Whorton, 67, of Hot Springs, passed away Sunday, March 2, 2008, at a Hot Springs hospital.
Lavan was born
July 19, 1940, in Russellville, to Woodrow W. and Georgia Whorton. He attended Russellville High School and later graduated from Arkansas Tech University with a degree in accounting. He spent his career serving as accountant and financial officer for numerous companies in the poultry industry. He was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church in Russellville and First United Methodist Church in Hot Springs. He was an avid runner and golfer early in life, and spent much of his final years boating and fishing with his grandchildren. Lavan fought the good fight and kept the faith, surviving 14 years after a liver transplant in September 1994. His family will be forever grateful to his anonymous donor.
His father, Woodrow W. Whorton, and sister, Mary Hubbard preceded him in death.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Joey Standridge Whorton of Hot Springs; mother, Georgia Whorton of Russellville; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Greg and Amy Whorton of Hot Springs; son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Tammy Tyler of Springdale; and five precious grandchildren, Ryan Tyler, Bailey Tyler, Hannah Whorton, Hayes Whorton and Helen Claire Whorton.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home in Hot Springs

DARDANELLE - Keith Millard Moore, 73, of Dardanelle died Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at River Valley Medical Center.
He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who loved his family and his dog, Ginger, very much. He was born
July 14, 1934, at Carden Bottoms to Eurby and Johnny Mae Maxie Moore. He was a member of the Dardanelle City Council, Disabled American Veterans of America, Masons, Shriners, Scottish Rite, Lions Club, Eastern Star and Dardanelle First United Methodist Church. He served on the Dardanelle School Board for 15 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Keith Allen Moore and Dennis Lee Jones; brother, Dick Moore, Peck Moore and J.E. Moore; and sisters, Opal Fisher, Johnny Nell Smith and Ruby Moore.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Patricia Henry Moore; children and spouses, Michelle and Charles Gordon of Dardanelle, Melanie and Jimmy Paulman of Russellville, Scott Moore of Russellville, and Kristen and Aaron Hoffman of Dardanelle; a father and grandfather to Jeremy and Tara Lamb, September Anthony and Mercedes Antony, all of Dardanelle, and Rachelle Vor of Minnesota; and four great-grandchildren, Stormy Lamb, Christiana Vor, Joshua Vor and Joseph Vor; brothers, William Eurby Moore of Pottsville and Scotty Moore of Dardanelle; a sister, Ora Faye Tousky of Dardanelle; and several nieces and a nephew.

CLARKSVILLE - Herbert Arch Griffin Sr., 93, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Clarksville, died Saturday, March 1, 2008, at Spring Gate Nursing Home in Memphis.
He was owner/operator of a sawmill. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Henry and Ruby Lillian Harvey Griffin; and his wife, Mamie Lee Clark Griffin.

Lewis Billings Sr.
Lewis W. Billings Sr., 89, a resident of Russellville died Saturday, March 1, 2008, at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Russellville.
He was born
Oct. 31, 1918, at Newton, Ill., to Lewis Elijah and Margaret India Jenkins Billings. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a guidance counselor at Crossett Public Schools for 16 years and at Russellville Public Schools for 14 years; and a member of the community chorus for 35 years. He loved to garden and was a member of the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Russellville. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Martha Ann McCarthy; a half-brother, Claude Earl Billings; and two half-sisters, Hazel Sullivan and Myrtle Celarier.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Martha Billings of Russellville; a son and daughter-in-law, Lewis Billings Jr. and Patricia of Livingston, Texas; three brothers, Dr. James J. Billings of Las Cruses, N.M., and David Neal and John Billings, both of Little Rock; four grandchildren, Lewis Billings III, Mathew Carrol Billings, Carol McCarthy and Mary McCarthy; and five great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at Shinn Chapel with the Rev. Otis Mackey officiating. Burial will follow in Booher Cemetery

CLARKSVILLE - Kenneth William Turner, 83, of Lamar died Sunday, March 2, 2008, at Veterans Administration Hospital in Fayetteville.
He was born
Feb. 12, 1925, in Hiawatha, Kan., and was a saw miller and logger and a member of Bunch-Walton Post 22 of the American Legion and Lamar Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred Burl and Lena Pearl Turner; wife, Dorothy Turner; son, James Dale Turner; and three brothers, Ray, Fay and Arnold Turner.
Survivors include a son, Bill Turner of Lamar; daughters, Kathy Dyer, Lynne Nichols and Rita Kraus, all of Lamar; brothers, Ottis Turner of Portland, Ore., and Burl Wayne Turner of Pomona, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, Jamie Taylor, Becky Taylor, Erica Thomas, Alfred Milam, Shauna Milam, Matt Needham, Ashley Stewart, K.T.
