Jane Keenan
Jane Jones Keenan, 95, of Pottsville died Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Russellville.
The daughter of Alexander Marshall and Avice Idona Kindrick Jones, she was born
May 16, 1912, in Pope County. She was a graduate of the University of Tennessee and was a registered nurse. She married
George Wendell Keenan on Sept. 14, 1940 in Tucumcari, N.M., and they lived in Clovis, N.M., until moving to Pottsville in 1971. Jane was a member of the Mars Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George Wendell Keenan; four brothers and three sisters.
Survivors include a son, George Keenan and wife, Glenda, of Oxford, Miss.; a daughter, Peggye Cluck and husband, John, of Amarillo, Texas; six grandchildren, Amye Brewer of Short Hills, N.J., Hannah Cluck of Republic of the Congo, Karl Keenan Cluck of Shanghai, China, Matt Keenan of Birmingham, Ala., Johnathan Keenan of Charlotte, N.C., and Annie Pons of Washington, DC.; four great-grandchildren, Jane Katherine Brewer and Evan Michael Brewer of Short Hills, and Ella Flowers Keenan and Frances Harper Keenan of Birmingham; one brother, Billy Warren Jones of Pottsville; one sister, Nell Norris of Pottsville; a nephew and niece, William and Martha Jones; and many other loving nieces and nephews.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. today at Bowden Cemetery
in Pottsville with the Rev. Bill Moody officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Humphrey Funeral Service.

Vada Almond
Vada Lee Almond, age 98, of Russellville, passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2008, at Stella Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
A daughter of the late Phillip and Hattie Duncan Montgomery, she was born
Dec. 20, 1909, at Bismarck, Ark. Before her retirement, she was a buyer for Sears in Little Rock. She was an avid reader and really liked to solve advanced crossword puzzles. She was a member of Winans Avenue Missionary Baptist Church in Hot Springs. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester Lee Almond; two daughters, a granddaughter, four brothers and a sister.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Phillip Lee and Marie Almond of Russellville; four grandchildren: Tiffany Almond Lutrell and her husband, Russ, of Russellville, Charles Hamby and his wife, Jan, of Cabot, Allen Hamby and his wife, Ronaee‚ of Bryant, and Sharon LaBruno and her husband, Rick, of Dalzell, S.C.; 12 great-grandchildren, including Allison Grace Lutrell of Russellville; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
The graveside service and burial will be conducted by Shinn Funeral Service at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at DeRoche Cemetery
near Bismarck. Bro. Chris Morrison will officiate.
Honorary pallbearer will be her sister-in-law, Willie Montgomery.

Harold Dixon
Harold Udell Dixon, age 82, of Little Rock, died Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at the Hospice Home Care Inpatient Facility.
A son of the late Buford and Othel Kendrick Dixon, he was born
Sept. 29, 1925, in Russellville. He was a retired florist and U.S. Postal clerk, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Disabled American Veterans in Conway, and the Legion Hut in Little Rock. He was a member of the Chicot Road Baptist Church of Little Rock. He was also preceded in death by a son, Johnny Leonard Dixon, and two brothers, David Houston Dixon and Olan James Bowden.
Survivors include his wife of almost 60 years, Mildred L. Dixon; a sister, Frances Helen Donahou of Russellville; five grandchildren, Katrinka Mondy of Little Rock, Harold Oneil Dixon of Mabelvale, Lucinda Cathaleen Wilder of Little Rock, Johnny Leonard Dixon Jr. of Mayflower and Shawn Michael Dixon of Kenosha, Wisc.; and two great-grandchildren, Geni Cathaleen Wilder and Larry Wayne Wilder, both of Cabot.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. today at the Shinn Chapel, officiated by Bro. Sam Whitlow. Burial in Oakland Cemetery
will be by Shinn Funeral Service of Russellville.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 10-11 this morning at the funeral home.
Oneta Sweeden
ATKINS - Oneta Sweeden, 86, of Atkins, died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center.
She was born
Feb. 7, 1922, in Pope County, Ark., and was the daughter of the late Wade and Dovie Austin. She was also preceded in death by a son-in-law, Bill Fike. She was a member of the Bells Chapel Methodist Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, Herbert “Son” Sweeden of Atkins; two daughters and a son-in-law, Anna Fike of Russellville, and Nina and Jerry Davis of Atkins; grandchildren, Missy Haney, Ronnie Davis, Keith Fike, Kevin Fike, Terri Poynter and Roxanne Jones; 10 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, at Lemley Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Robert Woody officiating. Burial will be in Atkins City Cemetery
by Lemley Funeral Service.
Visitation will be 6-8 tonight.
Pallbearers will be Ronnie Davis, Keith Fike, Kevin Fike, Eddie Higman, Toby Whitcomb, Shawn Crites and Tyler Haney.
Opal Tolbert
CLARKSVILLE - Opal Ann Barnes Tolbert, 89, of Clarksville died Monday, Feb. 11, 2008, in Johnson Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 28, 1918, at Swain (Newton County), she was the daughter of the late John L. and Fannie Edgmon Barnes. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, worked in the church Mustard’s Shop for 20 years. She was the life partner of a prominent local peach grower for 50 years, Watts Tolbert, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Tolbert.
Survivors include a son, Phillip Tolbert and wife, Glenda, of Muskogee, Okla.; a daughter, Maris Jean Fletcher of Beebe; two brothers, Thurman Barnes of Sand Springs, Okla., and Charlie Barnes of Lebanon, Mo.; grandchildren, Kenneth Fletcher of Richland, Wash., Mark Fletcher and wife, Liz, of Houston, Texas, and Steven Tolbert and wife, Michelle, of Muskogee, Okla.; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, at Hardwicke Chapel with the Rev. David Hanshaw. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery
under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home.

Laurel Caviness
DANVILLE - Funeral service for Laurel A. Caviness, 84, will be held at 10 a.m. today at Cornwell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Parks Cemetery
on State Highway 28, one mile west of Gravelly.
Laurel Ellis was born
May 30, 1923, in Memphis, Texas. She married
Jim Caviness on Dec. 9, 1949, in Memphis. He preceded her in death in 1982.
She lived a frontier life, moving from the plains of the Texas Panhandle to a homestead near Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming before settling on a cattle ranch at Gravelly, Ark., in western Yell County. She was a fine shot with a rifle and claimed her fair share of antelope and deer. She was a housewife, sold real estate and volunteered at the Danville Public Library.
She loved her Arkansas Razorbacks, Dallas Cowboys and NASCAR. She also enjoyed the occasional venture to Las Vegas, Reno and Oaklawn. She was a voracious reader and astute political observer. However, nothing equaled the joy of spending time with her grandchildren.
Mrs. Caviness died at home with her family present Monday, Feb. 11, 2008.
Survivors include one son, Keith Caviness of Little Rock; one daughter, Cheryl Heskett of Jonesboro; one sister, Lee Murdock of Amarillo, Texas; and four grandchildren, Patricia Caviness Stepp, Laura Caviness, Jordan Heskett and Christine Heskett.

Hurley O. Scroggins, 85, of Dardanelle died Tuesday Feb. 12, 2008, at River Valley Medical Center in Dardanelle.

Steven Gomez
CLARKSVILLE - Steven Brad Gomez, 28, of Clarksville died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, at his home.
He was born
Sept. 10, 1979, and was employed in heating and air construction. He was elected student body president of the Arkansas Tech University Ozark campus, graduating top in his class for heating and air. He was a graduate of Bakersfield (Calif.) High School and served four years in the Army National Guard.
He will forever be loved and missed.
Survivors include a son, Steven Vance Gomez of Clarksville; a stepson, Zachary Leos; parents, Terri Burnett of Clarksville and Steven Gomez of Ohio; a brother, Justin Claye Beck and wife, Shauna, of Lamar; a sister, Alex Gomez of Bakersfield, Calif.; his girlfriend, Sarah Sanders of Lamar; nieces, Cayla and Sydney Beck, Marina, Maranda and Kaylee; grandparents, Tom and Francine Burnett of Coal Hill; aunt, Starlett Burnett of Coal Hill; and cousins and many friends.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, at Roller-Cox Chapel with the Rev. Darrell Bridges officiating. Burial will be in Coal Hill Cemetery. Arrangements are by Roller-Cox Funeral Home.
Pallbearers include Jeremy Adams, Boone Conquest, Aaron Sanders, Larry Riley, Andy Butler and Christopher Wood.
Honorary pallbearers are Justin Claye Beck, Tonya Henson and Tyrone Willis.
