Jack Lowman Bodie

Jack Lowman Bodie, 79, of Little Rock, died icon Friday, June 20, 2003. He was born icon in Morrilton, AR, April 13, 1924, to the late Jim and Frances Bodie. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 32 years, Inee Bodie. He graduated from Pine Bluff High School in 1942, where he lettered in basketball and football for 3 years, was All-State quarterback in 1942, and played in the symphony and marching band. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1946. While there he was Cadet Commander, Eastern Intercollegiate Boxing Champion, and B-squad football quarterback. He was a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force and participated in a pilot exchange program with Great Britain's Royal Air Force. He served as Squadron Commander in the RAF, and was chosen to fly in the London coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. He retired from the USAF as a Lt. Colonel.

Since returning to Arkansas in 1963, he served as a Deacon, Sunday School teacher and choir member at First Baptist Church in Pine Bluff. In addition, he was Chairman of the Southeast Arkansas Blood Drive, served on the board of Southeast Arkansas Arts and Science Center, had leading roles in community theater productions, founded the Pine Bluff Chapter of Christian Business Men's Council, was a Youth Home board member, and President of the Diamond State Chapter of the Society of Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America. He was also an avid runner and continued to compete in races into his sixties.
After moving to Little Rock in 1983, he became a Master Scuba diver, and served as an Elder, Sunday School teacher and choir member at Grace Presbyterian Church. He volunteered at First Presbyterian Church's Stew Pot and was a board member of the Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home in Monticello. He retired after 30 years as a broker with Morgan Stanley Dean Witter.

He is survived by his children: Kathy Bodie Allison and her husband Steve of Cabot, Jan Bodie Danner and her husband Edsel of Little Rock, Bill Bodie and his wife, Teresa of Little Rock and Beth Yocom and her husband Tony of Hope, AR, a brother Morgan William Bodie and his wife, Joan of Garland, TX and his twelve grandchildren, Stephanie, Angie and Kristie Allison, Jimbo and Liz Ramsay, Lane and Mackenzie Bodie, Leslie and Tyler Yocom and Clayton, Casey and Cory Danner.

A visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the Ruebel Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church, 9301 N. Rodney Parham Rd., at 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 23, officiated by Rev. Ann Russ. Immediately following service at the church, lunch will be served for those who wish to attend both services.

Full military burial will be held on Monday at 2:00 p.m. at the Arkansas State Veteran's Cemetery icon located at 1501 W. Marilyn, North Little Rock.

The family expresses special thanks to Paul Spann, Ron Malnor, and the staffs of Delicious Temptations and Dixie Café.

Hilda Cornish Coates

Hilda Cornish Coates, age 98, of Little Rock died icon Wednesday, February 12 in Atlanta, Georgia. She was born icon in Little Rock on March 21, 1904, to Ed and Hilda Cornish. She was pre-deceased by her husband, James Mitchell Coates, in 1982. They had been married icon for 57 years.

Hilda graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1925. She was active in the Planned Parenthood Movement in Arkansas in the 1930’s and volunteered for the Red Cross during World War II. She was a long-time member of the Junior League of Little Rock and the Country Club of Little Rock. When she was in her 80’s, she volunteered at the Fletcher Public Library for many years.

She is survived by two sons, James Mitchell Coates, Jr., of Tampa, Florida, and Edward Cornish Coates of Little Rock, and by one daughter, Mimi Coates Jones of Atlanta. She is also survived by six grandchildren, James Mitchell Coates, III, of Dallas, Texas, Cindy Coates Miller of Little Rock, Robin Coates Look of Dallas, Bentley Jones of Atlanta, Priscilla Jones McIntosh of Barrington, Illinois, Mimi Jones Stamper of Atlanta, and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family had a private memorial service in Atlanta on Thursday. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 17, at the Ruebel Funeral Home Chapel in Little Rock. Memorials may be made to the Fletcher Public Library, 823 N. Buchanan, Little Rock, AR 72205, or to the Planned Parenthood of Arkansas, 5512 W. Markham, Little Rock, AR 72205

Francis X. Cline

Frank X. Cline, of Little Rock, died icon Thursday, August 21, 2003. Dr. Cline was born icon in Monroe, and attended Northeast Jr. College, The US Military Academy, La Tech University, and LSU.

Dr. dine graduated with honors from LSU Medical School in New Orleans in 1951 served from 1953-1955 in the United States Air Force, being awarded the USAF Commendation Ribbon in 1955.

Dr. Cline practiced at the Delhi Clinic and Hospital through 1957, then furthered his education, completing his orthopedic surgery residency in 1960; after which he was a member of the orthopedic clinic in Monroe until he retired in 1996.

Dr. Cline was a member of numerous medical societies and fellowships, including President of this Society in 1984.

Dr. Cline was a fellow of the AAOS, The American College of Surgeons, The American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society, and The American Academy of Disability Evaluating Physicians.

Dr. Cline was a "giver" of community services.

He served as team physician for Neville High School and NLU. Nearly 40 years he provided orthopedic coverage for the La. State Handicapped Children's Service. His hours of service as an instructor for the City of Monroe, Trauma Life Support, and Instructor for Advanced Trauma Life Support through The American College of Surgeons is documented.

Dr. Cline authored many publications, gaining national recognition for his pioneering efforts related to injuries from ATV's.

Having boundless energy, Dr. Cline also pursed and enjoyed numerous other activities, many revolving wound his attraction for water sports - swimming, scuba diving, and serving as a founding member and president of the D'Arbonne Yacht Club. He joined the Orthopedic Clinic of Monroe in 1980. His business knowledge could and should be appreciated and utilized by some of our younger physicians.

Dr. Cline is survived by his wife Ann M. Cline of Little Rock and Monroe, Louisiana, one son, Francis X. Cline, III of Dallas, Texas, daughters Colleen Cline Stewart and husband James of Monroe, Louisiana, Catherine Goggin and husband Timothy of Noblesville, Ohio, Mrs. Cline's daughter, Pamela Johananoff of Paris, France, and 5 grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service at St. Andrews Church, 6711 W. Markham, Sunday at 3pm followed by a funeral service in Monroe, Louisiana later in the week.

Local arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

Bettie L. Black Christeson

Bettie L. Black Christeson, of Little Rock, died icon on Thursday, March 6, 2003. She was the widow of Dr. William Watkins Christeson who preceded her in death on June 4, 1993. Mrs. Christeson was a communicant member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral for thirty years. Her memberships included The Little Rock DAR Centennial chapter, Past State President of the Arkansas Pioneers Association, founding member of the Old State House Museum Association where she served on the board of directors for eight years and a member of the Little Rock Departmental Club as well as being an active volunteer in several other organizations. She is survived by her children, Marcus E Black of Loveland, CO and Imelda N. Black of Austin, TX, her brother, John C. Lloyd, two sisters, Eleanor McCoy and Grace Bascope’. She is also survived by Dr. Christeson’s children, Michael Christeson, Diane Phillips, Carol Bulloch and family and several grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral by the Very Reverend Henry Hudson. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park.The family will receive friend from 6-8 pm on Sunday evening at the Funeral Home. Pallbearers will include Dr. Tom Roberts, Michael Christeson, Tyler Bulloch, Victor Bulloch III, Victor Bulloch IV, and Wesley Bulloch. Honorary pallbearers will be Hannah Christeson, and Cole Bulloch. In lieu of floral tributes, Mrs. Christeson asked that donations may be made to CARTI and/or Angels in the Attic. She will be dearly missed by her friends and family. Arrangements are by Ruebel Funeral Home.

Brigadier General Edwin S. Chickering

Brigadier General Edwin S. Chickering, fondly known as “Chick”, died icon Friday, February 14, 2003 in Little Rock. He was born icon September 21, 1912, the third of four children of James and Helen Chickering of Oil City, Pennsylvania, where his father was with the Oil Well Supply Company. He grew up in Oil City, attended the University School in Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated with an engineering degree from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in 1935 where he was a member of the Chi Psi fraternity as were his father and older brother before him. During his boyhood, Chick developed a passion for flight, leading him to build and then fly his own glider which hung in the engineering lab at Lehigh for many years. Following graduation from Lehigh he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and attended flight school at Randolph and Kelly Fields in San Antonio, Texas. After winning his wings he applied for and was awarded a regular commission as a Second Lieutenant and was assigned to Kelly Field as an instructor. During this time he met and married icon Mary Jim Lane of Little Rock, Arkansas.

When the U. S. entered World War II, Chick was appointed Commander of the 357th Fighter Group which he led in combat from England. In June of 1944 he went into Normandy on D-Day Plus Two with advance elements of the Ninth Tactical Air Force to establish airfields which would be used by the Allies. Subsequently he was named Commander of the 367th Fighter group which he led until the war ended. During the war he was promoted to Colonel.

Following World War II, Colonel Chickering became an instructor at the Air Command and Staff School at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama. He attended the Air War College, graduating in 1950. In November of 1950 the Chickerings’ son James was born.

During the Korean conflict, Colonel Chickering served as Deputy Commander of the Air Force Fighter Weapons School, Las Vegas, Nevada, and later commanded the 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing at Kimpo, Korea.

Upon his return to the U. S. from Korea, Colonel Chickering became Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations of the Ninth Air Force and was based at Pope Air Force Base, North Carolina. In 1954 he was promoted to Brigadier General and assigned as Commander of the 405th Fighter Bomber Wing and Commander of Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. These organizations were merged into the 836th Air Division in 1957 which General Chickering commanded. During his tour of duty at Langley, General Chickering was awarded a commendation from the community of Hampton Roads for exceptional community service that raised the prestige of the military and greatly improved the relations between the military personnel of Langley and the surrounding area.

In 1958 General Chickering was assigned as Chief of Staff for Operations of the Pacific Air Forces, Hickam Air Force Base, Honolulu, Hawaii. In August of the following year he took command of the Pacific Air Forces Base Command, the Hawaiian Air Defense Division, and Hickam Air Force Base. During his tour of duty, statehood brought many exciting changes to Hawaii.

Returning to the mainland in 1961, General Chickering was assigned to the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force and later to the Office of the Secretary of Defense on a special project with the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency. His last military assignment followed as Chief of Staff to the U. S. Representative to the NATO Military Committee and Standing Group. General Chickering retired in November of 1967 in Alexandria, Virginia.

Active as always in his retirement, Chick worked several years for a Baltimore, Maryland engineering firm. He also was a founding member of the Clan Hamilton Society at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games in Linville, North Carolina and served as its Arkansas Commissioner after moving to Little Rock. Chick was an active Rotarian and held several offices including President.

General Chickering always encouraged youth and education, and in addition to the schools which he attended, he supported The Episcopal High School of Alexandria, Virginia, The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, and The College School of Webster Groves, Missouri, among others. He also generously supported the construction of the new Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville, North Carolina.

Chick is survived by his wife Mary Jim Chickering, his son Jim Chickering and daughter-in-law Robin Chickering of St. Louis, Missouri, his grandchildren Allison Christine Chickering and Edwin Shepard Chickering II, also of St. Louis, his older brother Kenton Chickering of Houston, Texas, nephews, Kenton Chickering III of Houston, Texas, Scott Chickering of The Woodlands, Texas, Benjamin Hamilton Chickering of Canton Georgia, a niece, Mrs. Carolyn Moore of Hilton Head, South Carolina, a nephew, Col. Champlin F. Buck III of Alexandria, Virginia, many cousins, and a host of admiring friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Easter Seals of Arkansas (3920 Woodland Heights Rd, Little Rock, AR 72212), All Saints Episcopal Mission (P. O. Box 117, Linville, NC 28646), The Friends of the Air Force Academy Library (P. O. Box 188, U. S. Air Force Academy, Colorado, 80840), or to another worthy cause.

Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery. Arrangements are by Ruebel Funeral Home.

The Honorable Agripino Cawich

The Honorable Agripino Cawich, age 56, of Belize, Central America, died icon Friday, August 8, 2003, at the University of Arkansas Medical Science Center. His Honor was the Minister of Government of Belize.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Gloria Ramirez Cawich, and three sons; Dr. Ian Cawich and wife Melissa of Little Rock, Demetrio Cawich, and Pablo Joaquin both of Belmopan, Belize.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

Rhode B. Causey

Rhode B. Causey, 99, of North Little Rock, passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2003. He was born icon on Feb. 6, 1904, in Ruston, La. where he grew up. After graduation in 1927 from Louisiana Tech in Ruston, he worked in sales for several major firms in Pine Bluff and Little Rock. He was regional manager for Marchant Calculator Company until 1953 when he formed the R. B. Causey Company. This 50-year-old office machine distributor continues in business today with his son, Blanchard Causey, as president. Mr. Causey remained active in his business long after normal retirement age, continuing to go the office daily until just a few weeks ago. In 2000, the Prime Time Program honored him as Arkansas' oldest living active full time worker. In that capacity, he joined other older active workers from all 50 states in a special meeting in Washington where their accomplishments were recognized in both Houses of Congress and they appeared before a Joint Committee on Employment of the Senior Worker. Mr. Causey was recognized as one of the oldest living alumni of Louisiana Tech at the school's 2001 Homecoming celebration.

He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church of Little Rock and the Baraca Sunday School Class for many years. Prior to that, he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher at Baring Cross Baptist Church in North Little Rock and Ohio Street Baptist Church in Pine Bluff. He has been a Mason for nearly 60 years.

An energetic sportsman, he was a long time member of Ducks Unlimited and enjoyed fishing as well. He spent many hours supervising and working on his rice and soybean farm in Prairie County. Another hobby was beekeeping and, until recently, he maintained a number of hives on his farm. He was often called upon to "rescue" swarms of bees that collected in public places in Little Rock.

Mr. Causey was preceded in death by his wife, Daisy Reed Causey of Pine Bluff in 1963 and by several brothers and sisters. He is survived by his daughter, Gaylia Causey Fortson and her husband D. Eugene Fortson of Little Rock; his son, Blanchard Causey and his wife Lynn of North Little Rock; a brother, M.L. Causey of Monroe, La.; and a sister, Lucille Smith of Ruston, La. In addition to the above, six grandchildren survive him; Gregory Hoyt Fortson of Little Rock; Daria Causey Aldridge of Memphis; Gigi Fortson Bailey of Little Rock; Grant Eugene Fortson of Little Rock; Vicki Causey Steadman of North little Rock; and Alyssa Causey Burke of Lewisville, Texas. 13 great-grandchildren also survive him.

Funeral services will be held at Ruebel Funeral Home in Little Rock at 11 a.m. on Tuesday with Dr. Rex Horne officiating. Family and friends burial services will be at Graceland Cemetery icon in Pine Bluff at 3 p.m. Visitation will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Monday at Ruebel Funeral Home, 6313 W. Markham in Little Rock.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Immanuel Baptist Church Building Fund or to a favorite charity.

Maurice Elizabeth Carter

Maurice Elizabeth Carter, age 87, of Little Rock passed away Saturday January 4, 2003.

Maurice was born icon on January 16, 1915 in Bald Knob and was the daughter of the late Thomas Douglas & Allie Mae Carter.

Miss Carter was a long time member of Oak Forrest United Methodist Church in Little Rock having joined in 1956.

She was a member of the Open Door Sunday school class, served in various positions of the church administrative board and was active in the Rebecca group of United Methodist Women.

She was retired from the Employment Security Division in Little Rock as a supervisor and had more than 25 years of faithful & dedicated service.

At the time of her death she was active in EHC City Club (Home Extension).

She was preceded in death by her sister Emma Carter and her brother Mahlon Clayton Carter.

She is survived by her 3 nieces Debbie Cowherd (Bob) of Little Rock, Mary Faust (Scott) of Denton & Ann Graham (Walter) of Richmond Virginia.

She is also survived by several great-nieces & nephews, Tracie & Justin Faust, Clay Alberson, Carter Graham & Emilie Godwin.

Funeral services will be Wednesday January 8, 10:00 a.m. at Oak Forrest United Methodist Church in Little Rock with the Reverend Beth Waldrup officiating.

Burial will be at Pinecrest Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Clay Alberson, Justin Faust, Carter Graham, Walter Graham, Scott Faust, Bob Cowherd.

Memorials may be made to Oak Forest Methodist.

Arrangements are by Ruebel Funeral Home of Little Rock.

John Milton Carr

John Milton Carr, age 64, of Little Rock, died icon Tuesday, October 21, 2003.

He was born icon in Little Rock and worked many years for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Family and friends will miss him.

He is survived by two sisters; Margaret G. Fairweather of Little Rock, Lyla Meredith Blakely of Harlingen, Texas, two nephews; Brandon L. Clark and wife Joy of Little Rock, Steven Clark of Little Rock, three nieces; Heather and Robin Blakely, Lyla Heeman, great-niece Jillian Miranda Clark, great-nephew, Blake Logan Clark, a close friend Nancy Wilson, and his devoted pets Annie and Martha.

There will be a graveside service Friday at 2pm at Edgewood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Pulaski County Humane Society.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.
