Edna Earl Brewster Shepherd

Edna Earl Brewster Shepherd, 97, of Mabelvale, widow of William Martin Shepherd and daughter of Oscar F. and Nannie Edna Austin Brewster, died icon Saturday, January 11, 2003. She was born icon in Pine Bluff, and graduated from Pine Bluff High School. She attended the University of Arkansas, where she pledged Chi Omega, and taught in Pine Bluff public schools.

Mrs. Shepherd is survived by her daughter Katherine Sue Phillips of Santa Maria, California, son Bill Shepherd of Little Rock, grandsons John Martin (Marty) Kennedy of Livermore, California, and Thomas Lynn (Tom) Kennedy of Little Rock, plus five step-grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several step great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Tuesday at Ruebel Funeral Home, 6313 West Markham, Little Rock. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mabelvale United Methodist Church, 10500 Woodman, Mabelvale, by the Rev. Steve Brizzi, with burial following in Pinecrest Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

Mrs. Shepherd’s family greatly appreciates the special care given by the personnel of Otter Creek Clinic, Chenal Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center and Southwest Regional Medical Center.

Ramona L. Shaw

Ramona L. Shaw, 46, of Little Rock, died icon Saturday, August 16, 2003. She is survived by two sons, Michael Lloyd of Little Rock, and Marshall Lloyd of Lonoke, her parents, Olin and Thelma Jackson of Little Rock, three grandchildren and a life-long friend David Remsing.

There will be a visitation on Tuesday, August 19 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Ruebel Funeral Home with a service to follow at 2:00 p.m. at Ruebel Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.

The family requests memorials in lieu of flowers be made to the Arkansas Hospice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

Sally A. Taylor Serrett

Sally A. Taylor Serrett, 89, of Little Rock, died icon Wednesday, February 19, 2003. She was born icon and raised in Hamburg, AR, where she graduated from high school. She then attended Draughn School of Business. In 1935, she married icon Joseph Serrett and he predeceased her in 1989. Mrs. Serrett was a member of Pulaski Heights Presbyterian Church, Woman’s City Club since 1962 and the Departmental Club. She loved to play bridge with friends. Survivors include her son, Fred Serrett of Hot Springs, two grandchildren, Fred Serrett and Dianne Serrett and four great-grandchildren, Chris and Lauren Stacy, Monica Cruz and Amber Serrett. She was also predeceased by a sister, Mary Leverette and a granddaughter, Robin Phillipe. A visitation will be held from 1-4:00 p.m. Monday at the Ruebel Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Ruebel Chapel. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. in the Hamburg Cemetery, Hamburg, AR.

Lt. Col. Elbert E. Self

Lt. Col. Elbert E. Self, retired, 84, of Little Rock, died icon Tuesday, July 1, 2003. He was born icon August 5, 1918 in La Plata, MO, to James and Laura Ferrell Self. Mr. Self was a resident of Little Rock, since 1972. He was a decorated veteran of World War II and Vietnam, and was employed by Sylvania Security.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Virginia Self, mother of their five surviving children, Gary Self of Faulkner Co., Steve Self and his wife Phyllis of Redding, CA, Ron Self and his wife Sheryl of Elizabethton, TN, Mike Self of Little Rock, and daughter Roxanne Proffer and husband Kirk of Jacksonville, AR. Mr. Self had 7 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. A sister Iola Wilson of Newton, NC, and 3 sister-in-laws, Wanda Self of Tulsa, OK, Stella Cothran and Kathleen Cothran both of North Little Rock.

Mr. Self will lay in state Monday, July 7, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. at Ruebel Funeral Home. Visitation will be held on Monday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Graveside funeral service with full military honors will be on Tuesday, July 8 at 10:00 a.m. at Little Rock National Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

The family requests, if desired, memorials may be made to Arkansas Hospice, 2200 Ft. Roots Drive, North Little Rock, Arkansas 72114.

Georgia Mae McKnight Sears

Georgia Mae McKnight Sears, age 80, of Little Rock, died icon on December 7, 2003 She was born icon on January 1, 1923 to the Late George and Lena McKnight. She was a member of The Geyer Springs Church of Christ and also attended Sandstone Church of Christ.

She is survived by three children, Mary Angela Sears of Little Rock, Sonny Sears and his wife Doris of Bryant, and George Sears and his wife Cheryl of Parker, CO, six grandchildren, Christy Tarkington, Jeremy Sears, Ginny Sears, Joseph Sears, Kristian Strange, and Benjamin Sears. She is also survived by 4 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Arthur Sears.

Funeral Services will be Thursday at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Ruebel Funeral Home with burial following at Forest Hills Memorial Park. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home.

Howard T. Shepherd

Howard T. Shepherd, of Little Rock, died icon Friday, September 26 at his home. He was born icon May 16, 1918 in Little Rock, to Mary Lee Thurmond and Joshua Kemp Shepherd.

He had successfully graduated from New Mexico Military Institute, Washington & Lee University, New York Insurance Institute, National Graduate Trust School, The Kennedy-Sinclaire Trust Sales Class, Officer Candidate School and various Air Force and Selective Service System Schools.

He served four years active duty in Army Air Corps during World War II and had 32 years of total reserve duty retiring as a Colonel in the Air Force Reserve and Commanding Officer of the Reserve Component Selective Service System. He was awarded Selective Service System Meritorious Service Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal.

Mr. Shepherd was a member of the Trinity Cathedral. He was a president of the Shepherd & Company, Fire Insurance Managing General Agents; Vice president of Shepherd & Company, Fire and Casualty Affiliate of National Union Insurance Companies; Resident Secretary and Manager for Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Western Tennessee for National Union Insurance Companies of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Trust officer with Worthen Bank & Trust Co. and a Trust Officer with Union National.

Mr. Shepherd was a member of The Country Club of Little Rock, The Capitol Club of Little Rock; Retired Officers Association; Little Rock Life Underwriters; Little Rock Air Force Base Community Council (Treasurer); Central Arkansas Estate Council; Little Rock Chamber of Commerce (Past Committee Chairman); YMCA (Past Chairman of Metropolitan Board); Arkansas Reserve Officers Association (Past President); Kappa Phi Kappa (Honorary); Ada Thompson Home for the Elderly (Treasurer); and Board Member of Roselawn Cemetery icon Board.

He was an avid swimmer and enjoyed water sports, calisthenics, weightlifting and gardening.

Mr. Shepherd is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margaret Ohm Shepherd, son Stephen Kemp Shepherd and wife Ruth Darrow of Little Rock, grandchildren, Stephanie Shepherd of Devil's Tower, WY, and Paul D. Shepherd of Austin, TX, a niece, Mary Lou Rife of Graeagle, CA, and a nephew, H. Lee Ambrose of Grand Junction, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Marion Shepherd Ambrose.

There will be a gathering at the family's home, 311 Normandy Rd., Little Rock, on Tuesday, September 30 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, October 1 at 11:00 a.m. at Ruebel Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be private.

The family wishes to express a special thank you to the Oncology Nurses at St. Vincent Infirmary and Arkansas Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

Mildred Hortense Higgins Scull

Mildred Hortense Higgins Scull, age 89, of Little Rock, died, Tuesday, November 11, 2003. She was born icon in Arkansas City, Kansas, the daughter of the late Clyde Ellsworth and Lottie Popplewell Higgins Street. Mildred was a graduate of Little Rock High School and attended Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. She was married icon to Miles Scull, Jr. who died icon in 1965. She and Miles live in Alexandria, Virginia, for several years raising one son Miles, III. After retiring in 1985 from her position as a financial secretary for an anesthesiologist she moved to Little Rock. While in Little Rock, she was active in her church, Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, the Arkansas Arts Center, and The Territorial Restoration. The family wishes to thank the staff of Arkansas Hospice for their love and care.

She is survived by her son, Miles Scull, III and wife Melody and their two children; Kristin Ann and Miles Liam Scull all of Tempe, Arizona, and one sister Helen Higgins Wittenberg of Little Rock.

There will be a memorial service for Mildred Thursday at 1:30pm, November 13, 2003 in the Pierce Chapel of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. Burial of ashes will be performed at Arlington National Cemetery icon next to husband.

In lieu of flowers memorials should be made to Trinity Episcopal Cathedral or The Arkansas Territorial Restoration.

Fred H. Schmutz

Fred H. Schmutz, 88, of Little Rock, died icon Sunday, August 17, 2003. He was born icon in Little Rock, to Frederick J. and Lassie Shofner Schmutz. He was educated in the Little Rock public schools, graduated from Little Rock Jr. College, the University of Iowa with a BA degree and the University of Southern California with a MA in Speech and Theater Arts. He was a Delta Upsilon, Phi Beta Kappa, Pi Epsilon Delta and Phi Kappa Phi. He was employed by various radio stations in Little Rock, for a short time before returning to the West Coast. While on the West Coast he performed in numerous stage and film productions including performance on stage as Marchbanks with Ann Harding in "Candida".

With the advent of WWII, he joined the Enlisted Reserve and following training at Randolph Field, he became an instructor at various air fields in California and Texas. Upon his discharge, he joined the J. P. Riddle Co, where he studied Portuguese and became an instructor for the Brazilian Military in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

After returning to Little Rock, he was employed by Channel 17, (later KATV). He then became director of broadcasting for the first show aired by KARK-TV and was employed there for many years. He was then one of several who pioneered public television as a program administrator for what became AETN. He left AETN in 1982. During the late sixties he worked briefly for Cranford, Johnson, Hunt.

Fred served as President of the Board of the Little Rock Community Theater, and President of the Board of the City Beautiful Commission. He was a lifelong member of Second Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Deacon and Elder. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jean Anne, two daughters, Julie Hollon Duro of Brooklyn, NY, and Anne Elizabeth Schmutz and her husband, John Stephan of Coral Springs, FL.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Second Presbyterian Church by Rev. Steve Hancock.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.

Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.
