Delbert Adolphe Schmand
Delbert Adolphe "Del" Schmand, age 88, of Little Rock, died Tuesday, September 9, 2003. He was born
in Little Rock, where he graduated from Little Rock High School, Little Rock Junior College and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, with his B.S. degree in electrical engineering in 1937. After school he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and then in the Army reserves, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1965. Del worked for the Corp of Engineers for 37 years. Part of this time included supervising design of locks and dams on the Arkansas River. He was awarded the Meritorious Civilian Service Metal (highest honor a civilian federal employee can receive) and was placed in the gallery of distinguished employees.
Following retirement from the Corps, Del became director of the Little Rock Port Authority until 1977, when he became associated with Garver and Garver Engineers in Little Rock. Del was inducted into the University of Arkansas College of Engineering Hall of Fame in 1973 and was appointed a charter member of the Advisory Council to the College. He was a member of Theta Tau, Chi Epsilon, and Tau Beta Pi (Eminent Engineer-Syracuse University). In the State of Arkansas, Del had served two terms on the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, and served as president of the Arkansas Post, Society of American Military Engineers and the Little Rock Engineers Club. Del joined the Arkansas Society of Professional Engineers in 1950, a group he served as president, treasurer, and national director. He also served on the National Society of Professional Engineers as regional vice-president, chairman of Professional Engineers in Government, 1967-69 and as president in 1977-1978. He was recently awarded the Outstanding Professional Service Award in 2000.
Apart from engineering, Del's interests are varied. He was an avid duck hunter having membership in the Big Six Duck Club, a member of Quapaw Quarter Association, Pulaski County Historical Society, Concordia Historical Institute, and a member of the Little Rock Jazz Club. He was very active in Scouting for over 25 years, having been a Scout Master and a member of Troop 045. His music career started playing the saxophone in the high school band, the National Guard Band and The Arcadians, a local dance band. He was an active member of his church, First Lutheran, which he served as president and treasurer. He also was a member of the Master's Swim Program, setting several records for his age group.
His latest projects included two books he authored-"Heritage of First Lutheran Church", published in 1988, and "The Sweet Side of Little Rock- A History of Candy Making in Arkansas, published in 1997.
Del is survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances Rossner Schmand of Little Rock, two sons; Delbert A. Schmand, Jr. and wife Mary Ann of Memphis, Eric R. Schmand and wife Melissa of Newport Beach, California, two daughters; Jane Carter and husband Ken of Little Rock, Jo Anne Holmes and husband Ron of Little Rock, predeceased by a brother, William Schmand Jr., a sister Alma Schmand Stephen, and 6 grandchildren, Emily and Margaret Holmes, and Nikki Schmand, Nolan, Bradley, and Lauren Carter.
There will be a visitation Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Ruebel Funeral Home, followed Friday with a funeral service at 10:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, 8th and Rock in Little Rock, officiated by Pastors Steven Teske and Paul Jilg. Burial will follow at Arkansas State Veteran's Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

Joseph A. Scerbo Sr.
Joseph A. Scerbo, Sr., of Little Rock, died Saturday, March 15, 2003. He was born
in Italy, and at the age of 16, came to America. After 50 years in the retail floral business in Jersey City, New Jersey, he and his wife Anna moved to Little Rock, in 1997. He loved to maintain a vegetable garden, which include two hundred tomato plants. He would often share his bounty with family and friends. He was a member of Our Lady of Good Council Catholic Church, and a life-long member of the Sons of Italy. Joseph is survived by his wife Anna Maria Aloi Scerbo of Little Rock, three son; Fred Scerbo and wife Pat of Tinton Falls, New Jersey, Joseph Scerbo and wife Judi of Little Rock, Frank Scerbo and wife Sue of Birmingham, Michigan, nine grandchildren; Gina Bilger, Denise Zemanovich, Gerilyn Aspres, Lori Scerbo, Heidi Iversen, Jennifer Fehr, James Scerbo, Holly Scerbo, and Joseph Scerbo, and 9 great-grandchildren. There will be a Rosary held Monday evening at 7pm at the Ruebel Funeral Home followed Tuesday with a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Good Council Catholic Church at 11 am, officiated by Reverend Greg Luyet and Reverend Jack Vu. Burial will be in New Jersey. Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Good Council Catholic Church.
Jimmy Richard Sayles
LTC (Ret.) Jimmy R. Sayles, 63, of North Little Rock, and Eureka Springs, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, September 21, 2003. Jimmy served 34 years in the Arkansas Army National Guard, retiring in 1993. He was assigned to STARC (-) AR ARNG at Camp Robinson. He was the S3 of 212 Signal Battalion Headquarters and was the Executive Officer for the 212 Signal Battalion. He also served as the Company Commander for D Company and was OSHA certified. At the time of his retirement, he was the Director and Civil Engineer for the Installation Support Unit at Camp Robinson. For the past seven years, Jimmy has served in the capacity of Director of Environmental Services for the Eureka Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Carol Diane Sayles; brothers Don Sayles of Hensley; Phillip Sayles of Jacksonville; daughters Dana Wiggins of Booneville; Tamara Rees of Jonesboro; Leslie Kerr of North Little Rock; son Raymond Scott Brown of Hot Springs. Jimmy was the proud grandfather of 6 ˝ grandchildren, Grant and Chase Wiggins; Reagan, Kendal, and baby Zachary Mark Rees to be born
in January; Lanie and Joshua Kerr. Jimmy will be greatly missed by a host of very close friends and family.
There will be a visitation from 6:00-8:00 pm Tuesday at Ruebel Funeral Home. Services will be Wednesday at 10:00 am, September 24, 2003 at Ruebel Funeral Home in Little Rock with Rev. Larry B. Henderson officiating. Interment
will be at Pinecrest Memorial Park in Alexander.

Kathryn Elizabeth Jones Frawley Turner
Kathryn Elizabeth Jones Frawley Turner of Reno, Nevada, formerly of Little Rock, passed away at her home on May 6, 2003, at the age of 44. She was born
to parents, Leland "Bud" Jones and Sarah Derbyshire Jones in Little Rock, on September 15, 1958. Kathryn was preceded in death by her grandparents, Francis and Leland B. Jones, Sr. and Marian and Louis W. Derbyshire. She is survived by an extended loving family, including her mother Sarah D. Jones of Little Rock; her father, Leland "Bud" Jones, and his wife Janet of Little Rock; her daughter, Elizabeth Faith Frawley of Fayetteville; her husband, Bill Turner of Reno, Nevada; her aunt and uncle, Dianne Kelly and John Saxon of Little Rock; her sister Laura Jones Thomson, brother-in-law David, and niece Emily of Arkadelphia; her sister Kristin Jones Heitzer, brother-in-law Greg, and niece Auden of Santa Cruz, California; along with many cousins.
A graveside memorial service will be held at Roselawn Cemetery
on Monday, May 12, at 3pm. Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

Herbert C. Turner
Herbert C. Turner, 95, of Little Rock, died Friday, July 18, 2003. He was born
on October 26, 1907 in Mulberry, AR, and was raised in Ft. Smith. In 1941, he married
Pattie Virginia Polk. Herbert worked his entire adult life calling on pharmacies and drug stores across the state of Arkansas, retiring when he was nearly 85. He was ordained a Deacon and an Elder at First Presbyterian Church where he also served as Sunday School Treasurer for many years. He was currently a member of Westover Hills Presbyterian Church.
He was predeceased by his wife Pattie Polk Turner on July 16, 2003. He is survived by his daughter, Betty Glenn and her husband, Carl, a granddaughter, Sharon Boyd and her husband, Patrick, two great-granddaughters, Erin and Ashlyn, and a sister Victoria Carroll of Ft. Smith.
A graveside service for Herbert and his wife will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday followed by a memorial service at Westover Hills Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m. Arrangements are by Ruebel Funeral Home.

John Douglas “Doug” Toney, Sr.
John Douglas "Doug" Toney, Sr. of Little Rock, died Tuesday, August 5, 2003. He was born
in Dallas, Texas, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, seeing action in the Pacific Theatre. Upon his return, he and his wife, Mary settled in Little Rock, where Doug eventually became a Real Estate Broker and Developer.
He was responsible for the development and co-founder of Western Hills Country Club, a principal in the development of the Antique Car Museum on Petit Jean Mountain, and past board of director of the Little Rock Board of Realtor's. Doug was very civic-minded having run for the Little Rock City Board. He and Mary were involved for many years with the American Field Services International Program hosting several exchange students.
He loved the outdoors, fishing as often as possible as well as taking the family on camping trips. He invented and manufactured his own fishing lure the "Dugspin" and holds the record Small Mouth Bass catch on the Buffalo River. He loved family vacations taking his family on trips worldwide. He played several musical instruments, loved country music and was writing a book. His favorite expression to his grandchildren was, "Did you have fun?"
Mr. Toney is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Elizabeth Raines Toney of Little Rock, two sons; John D. Toney, Jr. of Little Rock, George Toney of Charlottesville, Virginia, three daughters; Ann Wolfe and husband Lanny of Phoenicia, New York, Katie Barnett and husband Jerry of Vancouver, Washington, Laura Wheeler of Little Rock, 7 grandchildren; J.D., Katherine and Brooks Toney, Bonnie and Lee Barnett, Morgan and Griffin Wheeler.
There will a graveside service at 10 a.m. Friday, August 8, at Arkansas State Veteran's Cemetery
in North Little Rock, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 2223 Durwood Road, officiated by Reverend John Fleming. Services are under he direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

Phyllis Marie Geis Tolstedt
Phyllis Marie Geis Tolstedt, 80, of Little Rock, died Monday, September 29, 2003. She was born
in Sioux Falls, SD, where she graduated from Washington High School. In 1954, she married
Howard Hanson and was the first woman licensed Real Estate Broker in South Dakota. She successfully-operated Poulos and Hanson Real Estate Co. until her retirement in 1977, when she and Howard moved to Little Rock. He predeceased her in 1985. She and Grandon Tolstedt were married
in January 1995. Phyllis was a member of Our Lady of the Holy Souls Catholic Church.
She is survived by her husband, one son, Phil Hanson and his wife, Georgia of Sioux Falls, SD, and two grandchildren, Andrea Thompson and Peter Thompson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, October 2 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Holy Souls Catholic Church.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the South Dakota School for the Blind, Toy Library in Aberdeen, SD.

Clifford D. Thorpe
Clifford D. Thorpe, 90, of Little Rock, passed away at Presbyterian Village on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003. He was born
in Little Rock, March 30, 1913. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Nell McQuire, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Thorpe and his sister, Marian T. Flake.
He is survived by one sister, Helen T. Hoke of Little Rock, his nieces Ruth Healy, of Little Rock, Sue Kochel, of Jonesboro, Trish Norton, of Benton, nephews, Morgan Flake of Little Rock, Charles Hoke of Yukon, OK, and Robert Hoke of St. Petersburg, FL. He had retired after 43 years from Arkla Gas Co. He was plant operator for Arkla at Morrilton, AR, and Jefferson, TX, and later was town manager at England, AR, for 20 years. In 1965, he was promoted to superintendent of gas measurements at Little Rock. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Scottish Rite.
There will be a private burial at Pinecrest Cemetery
officiated by Rev. Howard Gordon.
