Martha Ann Graves Siemers

Mrs. Martha Ann Graves Siemers, aged 66, of Redwood City, California, died icon Friday, December 10, 2004. She was a native of Little Rock, Arkansas, daughter of the late William A. and Mabel Morehart Graves. She spent her early childhood and youth in Little Rock. When she was age fourteen her father, who was an officer and Interstate Commerce Commission Practitioner with the Rock Island Railroad, was transferred to the railroad's central office in Chicago, and she lived with her family in the Chicago suburbs of La Grange Park and Western Springs. Upon graduation from Lyons Township High School, she enrolled in the University of Illinois at Urbana, from which she received her baccalaureate degree in Education in 1959. After teaching for several years in an elementary school in suburban Chicago, she moved to the San Francisco area in the early 1960's. Beginning a lifelong career with the west coast Postal Data Center of the United States Postal Service in San Mateo, California, she met there her future husband, William Siemers, who was an accountant at the center. They were married icon on April 13, 1974.

Early in life she excelled academically. Even while enrolled in the third grade at the Fair Park Elementary School, she wrote a prize book review that was published in the Arkansas Gazette, and she was a blue ribbon participant in the Little Rock Public Library's summer reading program. Later, while a student at Pulaski Heights Junior High School, she attained listing on the school's Honor Roll. In high school she was inducted into the National Honor Society, and in 1956, out of a total of 750 students who took scholarship examinations, she was one of 72 students who were awarded the prestigious University of Illinois scholarship, exempting her from all tuition fees. While a student at the University, she was initiated into the Alpha Lambda Delta honor society, and she was the recipient of the Pan-Hellenic Council's commendation for highest scholarship. She also worked as a reporter for the college newspaper, The Daily Illini, and in addition belonged to the Delta Delta Delta sorority.

In Redwood City, with her husband, she was an active parishioner and communicant at St. Pius Church. She also provided numerous hours each week of volunteer service to the Redwood City Pets in Need animal shelter, while at the same time showering her own pets with much love and affection. A truly gentle and caring person, she will be remembered always by her family and friends for her kindness, warmth, and generosity of spirit.

She is survived by her husband, William Siemers of Redwood City, California, and a brother, John William Graves of Little Rock. An earlier funeral service was held at the Redwood Chapel Funeral Home in Redwood City, California, on December 16. A final graveside service will be conducted in Little Rock this Wednesday, December 22, at 2:30 p.m. at Roselawn Memorial Park, with the Reverend William Elser presiding. A visitation prior to the burial will be held on Wednesday from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Ruebel Funeral Home.

Loyde Dale Shaver

Loyde Dale Shaver, 50, of Mabelvale, died icon Friday, April 23, 2004. He was born icon in Sikeston, MO, to Harold and Betty Scott Shaver. He was a graduate of Sikeston High School. Dale also graduated from Cotton Boll Vocational Tech. Burdette, AR, with a certificate in air conditioning and refrigeration, Mississippi County Community College, Blytheville, AR, with an Associate of Applied Science in Industrial Technology and an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing. From 1972-1981 he was an M.P. in the United States Air Force stateside and overseas. On December 3, 1981 he married icon Dolores Edwards. Dale was currently employed by Arkansas Children's Hospital as a surgical nurse.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores, of Mabelvale, a daughter, Layla Sutton, her children, Breanna and Scotty, a son-in-law, Thomas O'Guin and his children, Seth and Tori, a niece, Jennifer Hartzog, all of Sikeston, MO, a brother, Johnny Shaver and his wife, Felicia of New Madrid, MO; best friends, Jon Wellnitz, Ronnie Byrd, and Doug Tuten. Dale is also survived by his mother, a brother, Raymond Shaver, and a half-sister, Linda Helm, all of Sikeston. He was preceded in death by his father.

A visitation will be held from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the Ruebel Funeral Home followed by funeral services at 10:00 a.m. Monday at the Ruebel Funeral Home Chapel. A private burial will follow in Blytheville.

Memorials may be made to Arkansas Children's Hospital.

Dr. Walter George Selakovich

Walter George Selakovich, 80, of Little Rock, passed away on August 18, 2004 at St. Vincent Infirmary after a short illness. His family will remember him as a loving father and "papa" and his peers will remember him as a caring and respected physician.

He was born icon on March 25, 1924, in Quealy, Wyoming to Martha and George Selakovich. He graduated from high school in Great Falls, Montana. He attended the University of Notre Dame from 1942 to 1944 and then was called to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II (He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War). After the war, he attended Northwestern University where he received his M.D. Post-graduate training included: an internship at Evanston Hospital, an Orthopedic Residency at Hines V.A. Hospital and Honolulu Shriners Hospital, and a Fellowship at Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans. In 1959, he became a board certified Orthopedic Surgeon. From 1958, his academic appointments included: Clinical Instructor of Orthopedic Surgery, Associate Clinical Professor, and Clinical Professor at The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (U.A.M.S.) and The V.A. Hospital. In addition to his own private practice from 1957-1994, he served as Chief of Orthopedic Surgery for St. Vincent Infirmary and Arkansas Children's Hospital. He received many honors and recognitions including: Examiner for The American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, The Walter G. Selakovich, M.D. Faculty Teaching Award (U.A.M.S.), and Distinguished Service Award (U.A.M.S.). He was a member and president of several Orthopedic Societies and published and presented many Orthopedic papers. During his professional career, he trained well over 100 Orthopedic residents.

He was a charter member of Christ The King Catholic Church. As a long time member of Pleasant Valley Country Club, he loved playing golf-rain or shine.

He is preceded in death by his parents Martha and George Selakovich and one son, Kevin Nolan Selakovich. Survivors include: His wife of 57 years, Kathleen Nolan Selakovich, one sister, Helen Michelotti, five sons; Walter Jr. and his wife Tina, Thomas and his wife Margaret, Richard and his wife Dale, Steve and his wife Stacy, Patrick and his wife Kristina, three daughters; Martha Heard and her husband Mark, Erin Davis and her husband Ben and Anne Sanders and her husband Clay. In addition to his children, he is also survived by twenty-three loving grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at Christ The King Church on Friday, August 20th from 5:00-7:00 p.m. followed by a Rosary service. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, August 21st at 10:00 am at Christ the King Church. A private Graveside service will follow at Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Walter G. Selakovich Orthopedic Residency Program, UAMS Orthopedic Surgery 4301, West Markham-slot 531, Little Rock, Ar. 72205 and the Msgr. Hebert Endowment Fund, Christ The King Catholic Church, 4000 North Rodney Parham Road, Little Rock, Ar, 72212.

Marguerite Scott

Marguerite Scott, born icon August 1, 1914 in North Little Rock, Arkansas, passed away at peace on Wednesday, February 18, 2004 in Tyler, Texas. She was preceded by her husband, Robert Scott in 1995. They previously resided in Little Rock, Arkansas, where they were very active in their church, Pulaski Heights Baptist, and the "Young at Heart" program for senior adults. She was also a member of the Tri-W sorority, a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

She is survived by her daughter Brenda Gregory and her husband John, who reside in Tyler, Texas, and her son, Bob Scott and his wife Jann, who reside in Dallas, Texas. She is also survived by her grandchildren, John Gregory V, Scott Gregory, Tiffani Scott Anderson, and Amanda Scott Caperton, their spouses, and her great-grandson, Jake Robert Anderson.

There will be a graveside service at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 21 at Pinecrest Memorial Park, Alexander, Arkansas, 72002. Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Young at Heart, c/o Pulaski Heights Baptist Church, 2200 Kavanaugh Blvd., Little Rock, Arkansas 72205.

Charles Lewis Schneider

Charles Lewis Schneider, age 83, of Little Rock, died icon March 20, 2004. He was born icon on August 3, 1920 in North Little Rock, Arkansas, to the Late Harry and Ester Schneider. He was a member of Temple B'Nai Israel. Mr. Schneider was a WWII Veteran having served as a pilot with the Army Air Corp. He was a captain with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, he also Captained many ships in international waters. Mr. Schneider also served as Captain for the now retired Channel 7 yacht and was a member of the Little Rock Yacht Club. He was a charter member of the North Little Rock Rotary Club and a member of a local investment group. Mr. Schneider was a third generation owner and operator of Schneider's Inc. Men's Clothing, Tailoring and Uniform Store located at 114 North Main in North Little Rock. Other than boating, he enjoyed traveling, fishing, playing the piano, dancing and listening to Big Band Music. His kindness touched many lives.

Mr. Schneider was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Ann. He is survived by his children; Debbie Schneider, Carol Bourland, Chris Schneider and his wife Sue all of Dallas, and John Schneider of Sacramento, CA; his grandchildren, Charles David Raimbault and his wife Sveta, Jennifer Bourland, Brent Bourland, Jeffrey Schneider, Andrew Schneider, and Joseph Schneider all of Dallas; two great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Mathew Raimbault also of Dallas. Mr. Schneider is also survived by two sisters; Joyce Ehrenberg of Little Rock and Dena Bock of New York, and his dearest companion for many years, Jane Mendel of Little Rock.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at Temple B'Nai Israel with Rabbi Eugene Levy officiating. The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Jean Anne Whitten Schmutz

Jean Anne Whitten Schmutz, age 80, of Little Rock, died icon Wednesday, February 25, 2004. She was born icon in West Tennessee, to the late K. H. Whitten and Lillie McBride Currie Whitten. She was educated in public and private schools in Tennessee, and Alabama, and was a member of Phi Mu sorority. She was a member of the board of the Women's Emergency Committee to Open Our Schools, which in 1999, was awarded the National Education Association's Civil Rights Award. She was the founder and chairman of KEEP, the Kindergarten Educational Enrichment Program. This pilot project, which preceded Head Start, was intended to provide funds for public kindergarten classes to help children of all income levels prepare for first grade. In 1965, she was appointed chairman of the State Council of Remedial Education, the purpose of which was to administer the funds of a federal assistance program that aided underprivileged school children. She served as a member in the Little Rock PTA, and worked with a group to strengthen Little Rock's federally aided school lunch program. She was a past president of the Prospect Terrace Garden Club, a member of the Arkansas Arts Center, a member of the Fine Arts Club, a charter member of the Theatre Guild of the Community Theatre, a member of the Old State House, and a member of Second Presbyterian Church.

She is the widow of Frederick H. Schmutz, and is survived by two daughters, Julie Hollon Duro of Astoria, New York, and Anne Elizabeth Schmutz and husband John Stephan of Coral Springs, Florida.

The memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Second Presbyterian Church officiated by Reverend Steve Hancock. Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.

Anna Marie Aloi Scerbo

Anna Marie Aloi Scerbo, age 93, of Little Rock, died icon Tuesday, January 20, 2004. She was born icon in Jersey City, New Jersey, where she attended high school. After 50 years in the floral business in Jersey City, she and her husband Joseph, who died icon in 2003, moved to Little Rock, in 1997. Anna was a devoted Catholic having membership at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Jersey City, for 50 years and Our Lady of Good Council Catholic Church in Little Rock where she was a member of the alter guild and for the past 6 years helped decorate the alter for Christmas and Easter. She also volunteered in the Food Pantry of Good Council which helped feed those in need. Anna was a great cook and a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who never spoke an unkind word. The family would like the thank Mary, Georgia and Vickie for their devotion and love.

She is survived by three sons; Fred Scerbo and wife Patricia of Tinton Falls, New Jersey, Joseph Scerbo, Jr. and wife Judith of Little Rock, Frank Scerbo and wife Sue of Birmingham, Michigan, nine grandchildren; Gina Bilger, Denise Zemanovich, Gerilyn Aspres, Lori Colosimo, Heidi Iverson, Jennifer Fehr, James Scerbo, Holly Scerbo, and Joseph Scerbo, and 9 great-grandchildren.

There will be a Rosary Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at the Ruebel Funeral Home followed Friday with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Council Catholic Church officiated by Father Jack Vu. Burial will take place in New Jersey, at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Ruebel Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers memorials should be made to Alzheimer's of Arkansas, 10411 West Markham Street, Little Rock 72205, Our Lady of Good Council Catholic Church, or Arkansas Hospice, 5800 West 12th Street, Little Rock 72204.

Bernice Fedder Sanders

Bernice Fedder Sanders, 90, of Little Rock, died icon July 30, 2004. She was born icon April 11, 1914, in Alexandria, VA, to the late Harry and Jenny Fedder. She was preceded in death by her brother, Stanley Fedder.

Mrs. Sanders was a long- time member of Temple B'Nai Israel and a Past President of the Temple Sisterhood. During the integration crisis of 1957, Mrs. Sanders served as the Historian of the Women's Emergency Committee and later was a member of STOP (Stop This Outrageous Purge). In addition, she was the Past President of the Little Rock PTA, a past member of the MEMS Board, a former Pulaski County Justice of the Peace, and a past President of St. Vincent's Auxiliary.

Mrs. Sanders is survived by her husband of 56 years, Arthur O. Sanders, and her daughter, Sue Sanders Maddison and her husband Keith, her sister-in-law, Sue Fedder, and nephews Kirk and Scott Fedder.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 2, 2004 at Temple B'Nai Israel with Rabbi Eugene Levy officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Temple B'Nai Israel, 3700 North Rodney Parham, Little Rock, AR 72212 or The Arkansas Hospice, 5600 West 12th Street, Little Rock, AR 72204.
