Mrs. Frances 'Jonsie' Jones
Mrs. Frances 'Jonsie' Jones, age 77, resident of De Queen, died Friday, May 24, 2002 in Pine Grove Nursing Center at Center, Tex.
Cremation was under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home of De Queen.
She was born March 21, 1925 at Center, Tex., to Thomas Lee and Clara Oma Jeane Jackson; was a retired hair stylist; and a homemaker. She was predeceased by her husband, John Jesse Jones in 1985.
She is survived by a brother, James E. Jackson of Joaquin, Tex.; two sisters, Adele Athony of Center, Tex., and Lucille Hughes of Joaquin, Tex.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Thelma Griffin
Thelma Chambers Griffin, daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. W. H. Chambers, died on May 29, 2002, at her home in De Queen, Arkansas after a lengthy illness. She left this world as she lived life, unafraid and optimistic, with the love of her family and friends.
Ms. Griffin was born on May 19, 1914, in Burg, Arkansas and lived for many years in Howard County. As a young woman, Ms. Griffin drove her father on house calls made to Howard County residents. She was a devoted Christian, precious Mother and Grandmother who emphasized to her children the value of life and the need to live it with integrity. Ms. Griffin was a retired poultry grower. She will be deeply missed by those who loved her.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Otis Griffin, and eight brothers.
She is survived by three daughters, Ms. Wanda Smith of De Queen, Arkansas; Ms. Susan Gilbert of Garland, Texas; and Ms. Connie Carroll of Little Rock, Arkansas; one son, Mr. Wayne Griffin of Daingerfield, Texas; five granddaughters and numerous great-grandchildren.
Family visitation was held on May 31st from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.
Services were held at Wilkerson Funeral Chapel on Saturday, June 1, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. LeLand Burkett officiating. Interment followed at the Dierks cemetery.
Curtis Eugene Smith
Curtis Eugene Smith, age 71, resident of De Queen, died Friday, May 31, 2002 in Texarkana, Tex.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 3 in Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joe Carlton and Rev. Lawrence Hammond officiating. Burial followed in Redmen cemetery.
He was born Sept. 25, 1930 in De Queen to Leroy and Birdie Rowlett Smith; was retired from Bell Helicopter Corporation; and was a member of Memorial Missionary Baptist Church in De Queen.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Cheek Smith of De Queen; one son, Vic Smith of Danbury, Conn.; one daughter, Cindy Creamier of Ft. Worth, Tex.; three brothers, Lyndell Smith, Terry Smith and Randy Smith, all of De Queen; one sister, Sue Wilson of De Queen; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Billie Carol Griffin
Billie Carol Griffin, age 52, resident of Vian, Okla., died Thursday, May 30, 2002.
Funeral services were held Saturday, June 1 in Luginbuel Funeral Home Chapel in Prairie Grove with Rev. Leroy Watkins officiating. Burial followed in Shady Grove cemetery near Evansville.
She was born Sept. 19, 1949 at Prairie Grove, Ark., to Denver R. and Eloise Rose Dobbs; and was a member of Vian Free Holiness Church. She was predeceased by her father, Denver Dobbs.
She is survived by one son, Denver Griffin of Maumelle; two daughters, Farion Houston of Sallisaw, Okla., and Paula Griffin of Poteau, Okla.; her mother, Peggy Dobbs of Evansville; one brother, Tim Dobbs of Evansville; two sisters, Pat Ellison of Lavaca and Glynetta Dayberry of Bryant; and six grandchildren.
Bobby Manasco
Mr. Bobby Neal Manasco, age 69, a resident of Umpire, Arkansas, passed away on Monday, June 3, 2002 at his home.
He was born on Tuesday, May 9, 1933 in Umpire to Jim and Emma Schoolfield Manasco. He was a rancher, a member of the Umpire Methodist Church, and a Army Veteran.
Mr. Manasco is survived by his wife: Darlene Manasco of Umpire; one daughter and son-in-law: Anita and James Ward of Umpire; two sons and daughters-in-law: Jimmy and Julie Manasco and Jerry and Dana Manasco, all of Umpire; seven grandchildren: Maria Mark-ham, Josh Markham, Kelsey Ward, Kara Manasco, Brandon Manasco, Krystal Manasco and Brady Manasco; two brothers: Reece Manasco and James F. Manasco, both of Umpire; and one sister: Wanda Sirmon of Brandon, Mississippi.
Funeral services for Mr. Manasco were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2002 in the Umpire Methodist Church with Rev. Don Vaughn and Rev. John Henry Williams officiating. Burial followed in the Bethel cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in Dierks, Arkansas.
Viewing was held at the Chapel in Dierks.
Ulysess Howard Stricker
Ulysess Howard Stricker, age 87, resident of De Queen, and formerly of Sacramento, Calif., died Wednesday, June 5, 2002 in De Queen Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Stricker was cremated and a memorial service will be announced later by Chandler Funeral Home of De Queen.
He was born July 8, 1914 in Marshall to Albert Landford and Isophene Stricker; was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army; a retired welder in construction and industrial maintenance; a farmer; a 32nd degree Mason; and a member of the Sacramento Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Martinez Stricker; four daughters, Geneva Dorene Lawrence of De Queen, Kathryn Ann Kosters of Murrieta, Calif., Jennifer Lynn West of Waterford, Calif., and Ronda Marlene Collum of Modesto, Calif.; one step-son, Lester Gilbert of Sacramento, Calif.; one step-daughter, Delia Gilbert of Sacramento, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Orval Kenneth Benson
Orval Kenneth Benson, age 87, resident of De Queen, died Saturday, Oct. 5, 2002 in the Mena Manor Nursing Home.
The cremains will be scattered in Chasta Lake, Redding, Calif. Local arrangements were handled by Chandler Funeral Home of De Queen.
He was born May 15, 1915 in Alberta, Canada to Helmer and Gertrude Laver Benson; was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II; and a retired Grayhound bus driver.
He is survived by his wife, Juanita Evelyn Womack Benson of De Queen; three sons, John Benson of Encinitas, Calif., Gerald Benson of Frederick, Md., and Michael Benson of Redding, Calif.; one daughter, Linda Elliott of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one stepson, Richard Dempsey of De Queen; one stepdaughter, Patricia Gonzalez of Arcadia, Calif.; two brothers, Bud Benson and Gordon Benson, both of Redding, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Leona Caplinger
Mrs. Leona Lenora Caplinger, age 98, a resident of Arkadelphia, Arkansas and formerly of De Queen, passed away on Tuesday, October 8, 2002 in Arkadelphia.
She was born on February 8, 1904 in De Queen. She was a homemaker, a member of the Faith Missionary Baptist Church in Arkadelphia and was the last surviving charter member of the Memorial Missionary Baptist Church in De Queen.
Mrs. Caplinger was preceded in death by her husband: G. L. Caplinger; and one granddaughter: Paula Davis.
She is survived by one son: Paul Caplinger of Shreveport, Louisiana; one daughter: Rita Harris of Arkadelphia; four grandchildren: Pam Gibson, Cindy Chilsom, Greg Harris, and Jim Harris; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 9, 2002 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel in De Queen with Rev. Joe Carlton officiating. Burial followed in the Redmen cemetery.
The family received friends from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday, October 9, 2002 at the funeral home.
