Alice Estell Cartwright
Mrs. Alice Estell Switzer Cartwright, age 72, resident of Wickes, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003 in De Queen Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9 in Wickes Church of Christ with Virgil Romine, minister, officiating. Burial followed in Daniel cemetery under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen.
She was born June 7, 1931 at Grand Prairie, Tex., to Johnny Howard and Alice Gertrude Switzer; was retired owner and operator of Wickes Bait and Tackle and Wickes Used Furniture Store; a homemaker; and a member of Wickes Church of Christ. She was predeceased by her husband Howard Cartwright Jr. on Sept. 8, 2001; her parents; and a twin brother, Howard Ozell Switzer.
She is survived by one sister, Betty Jo Higginbotham of Pottsboro, Tex.; one step-son, Darrell Wayne Cartwright of Spokane, Wash.; two step-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8 at the funeral home.
Jennie Ann Fuller
Jennie Ann Maxine Rogers Fuller, age 83, resident of Waldron, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003 in a Ft. Smith hospital.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13 in Waldron Church of Christ under the direction of Martin Funeral Home of Waldron.
She was a homemaker; and a member of Waldron Church of Christ. She was predeceased by her husband, Franklin Pierce Fuller.
She is survived by five daughters, Shirley Brewer of Porter, Okla., Carole Rose of Boles, Sheri Stubbs of De Queen, Rhonda Piles of Parks, and Anita Barnett of Hope; one son, Roger Fuller of Hot Springs; two sisters, Geraldine Knause of Detroit, Mich., Alice Rogers of Ft. Smith; 16 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Betty Lee Pressley
Mrs. Betty Lee Sullivan Pressley, age 49, resident of Eagletown, Okla., died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003 in Tulsa Regional Medical Center at Tulsa, Okla.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9 in Chandler Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Homer Frachiseur officiating. Burial followed in West Otis cemetery.
She was born Dec. 29, 1953 at El Paso, Tex., to Halton Burl and Wanda Lee Blackwell; was a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church; and an employee at the Ranch House Café of De Queen. She was predeceased by her parents; and her daughter, Melissa Denise Murray on Aug. 31, 2002.
She is survived by her husband, Bobby Joe Pressley of Eagletown, Okla.; two sons, Bobby Dean Murray of Slaughter, Ken., and Scotty Joe Pressley of Murfreesboro; three daughters, LaQuetta Dawn Sharp of McEwen, Tenn., Deadra Gale Glass of Dickson, Tenn., and Mandy Jo Stanley of Texarkana; two brothers, Russell Dean Sullivan of Idabel, Okla., and Halton Sullivan of Broken Bow, Okla.; one sisters, Carolyn Moyer of Broken Bow, Okla.; 13 grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Bernard M. Cowden
Bernard Montgomery Cowden, age 76, resident of De Queen, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003 at his home.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5 in First Baptist Church of De Queen, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.
He was born Feb. 8, 1927 in Horatio to Clifton and Addie Mae Cowden; was in the wholesale and retail gasoline business in De Queen for 30 years; a member of First Baptist Church; and a veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma Davis Cowden; three children, Ronald Montgomery Cowden, Pamela Kay Bigham and Scott Davis Cowden; two sisters, Earlene Donaldson and Maxine Martin; seven grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Ruth Bales
Ruth Lyda Harrison Bales, 75, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 16, 2003. She was born on December 18, 1927 in the Melrose Community south of Lockesburg, Ark. Preceding her in death were her parents, Robert Roy Harrison and Lucy Jane Hull Harrison, and her husband, Robert H. "Bob" Bales.
Ruth graduated from Lockesburg High School and attended Henderson State Teachers College and Southern State College. She was a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. In later years she worked for Cherokee Carpet Mills and Falcon Industries in Lewisville, and was retired from the Stamps Public Library where she was the librarian.
Ruth, as well as her husband, was very active in The American Legion. She held posts at both the local and district levels, and was the first woman elected commander of the local American Legion, Carlton-Devanie Post #49.
Ruth is survived by a son, John Robert Bales of Dallas, Tex.; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda Ann and Larry Perry of Lewisville, Ark.; three grandchildren, Dawn Brazell Nottingham, Heather Denise Brazell, and Bruce Tyler Perry; one great-granddaughter, Carolyn Grace Nottingham; a brother, Robert Harvel Harrison of Little Rock, Ark.; two sisters-in-law, Josephine Y. Harrison of Lewisville, Ark., and Alice B. Bales of Baraboo, Wisc.; three nephews, four nieces, eight great-nieces, two great-nephews, and several cousins and other relatives.
Ruth requested that her remains be cremated. Memorial services will be held at a later date.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Belleville cemetery Association in Lockesburg, Ark., or the American Cancer Society.
Shannon L. Speer
Shannon L. Speer, age 69, resident of Lockesburg, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003 at his home.
He was born Oct. 27, 1934 at Booneville; was a retired chiropractor; a member of Rock Hill Baptist Church; and served in the United States Air Force.
He is survived by his wife, Patsy Baber Speer; one son, Michael L. Speer of Ft. Benning, Ga.; three brothers, Harrell Speer of Peculiar, Mo., Donald Speer of Harrison, Mo., and Denny Speer of Belton, Mo.; two sisters, Coleene Debrot of Peculiar, Mo., and JoEtta Frasier of Richardson, Tex.; one granddaughter; one great-grandson; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, in Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Jones officiating. Burial followed in Lockesburg cemetery.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home.
John Luke Shomo
John Luke Shomo, infant son of Tim and Mary Beth Forrest Shomo, residents of Winthrop, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2003 in Baptist Medical Center at Little Rock.
Besides his parents he is survived by four brothers, Mathew Lee of Winthrop, Derek Shomo, Michael Shomo and Stephen Shomo, all of Broken Bow, Okla.; one sister, Maycee Shomo of Winthrop; his paternal grandmother, Effie Shomo of Idabel, Okla.; and his maternal grandparents, Steve “Lighten” and Ivie Forrest of Winthrop.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19 in Campground cemetery with Rev. Audie Dawson officiating, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home of De Queen.
Hazel Irene Lybrand
Hazel Irene Lybrand, age 85, of Norman, died Saturday, January 3, 2004.
She was born on December 19, 1918 at Amity, the daughter of Ira Green and Alta Love Green. On December 23, 1941, she was married
to Spencer Lybrand who preceded her in death on January 21, 1995. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Everett Green.
She was a member of the Norman First Baptist Church and active in the Mount Ida Senior Citizens Center.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Alecia Lybrand of Soldotna, Alaska; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Barbara Dutton of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Connie and Ralph Pinkerton of Hot Springs, and Joan and Frank Scott of De Queen; eleven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Ernest Green of Mena; and one sister-in-law, Arlene Green of Durham, North Carolina.
Services were held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 7, 2004 in the Norman First Baptist Church with the Revs. Walter Gilbreath and Doug Wills officiating.
Visitation was Tuesday, 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Interment was in the Gaston cemetery under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood.
Pallbearers were Chad Lybrand, David Lybrand, J. D. Lybrand, Truett Love, Tim Miller and Jerry Bobo.
Honorary pallbearers were Bryan Wann, Cloe Dell Entricken, Jean Avra, Edward Wultzer, the special staff and caregivers at Montgomery County Nursing Home and the Women's Sunday School Class of Norman First Baptist Church.
