Mary Louise Jackson

Mary Louise Jackson, age 91, died Friday, April 29, 2005 in the Memorial Heights Nursing Homes in Idabel.

She was born Aug. 26, 1913 in De Queen to O.T. and Sally Carr Miller; was a member of Horatio Church of Christ; and lived most of her life in Cerro Gordo.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 74 years, Thurman Jackson.

She is survived by a son, Thomas E. Jackson; one daughter, Betty Rives; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 2 in Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Virgil Romine officiating. Burial followed in Cerro Gordo cemetery.

Marvin Joda Johnson

Marvin Joda Johnson, well-known, local realtor, passed away, Friday April 29, 2005 at his home in Pinole, California surrounded by his loving wife of 57 years, Mary Lou Wobbe Johnson and his nine caring children and other immediate family members.

Marvin and his twin sister Marjorie were born in De Queen, Arkansas on September 28, 1925 to Joda Johnson, former circuit & chancery clerk of Sevier County and Pearl Bennett Johnson. The twins were raised by his father and stepmother Fannie Mae Sparks Johnson after the death of his mother at age 5. Marvin shared many memories with his children of growing up on the Enoch and Luther family farms. Marvin enlisted in the Army Air Force at age 17 during World War II flying 37 missions, as a tail gunner on B-17 Flying Fortress' over Germany, while stationed in England. He was honorably discharged at age 20. Marvin met his future wife while on leave in his hometown of De Queen. Marvin and Mary Lou moved to California in 1953 and have lived in their current home in Pinole for the last 37 years. When he first moved to California, he began working for Santa Fe Railroad and thereafter owned his own advertising specialty agency in San Francisco. He parlayed his selling talents to a successful real estate career in the Bay Area for over thirty years.

Marvin was an avid trap and skeet shooter, active as a coach for Little League during his sons' youth and an original Oakland Raiders season ticket holder. He was most proud of being father of nine children and took pleasure in their accomplishments.

He will forever be missed by his wife, Mary Lou; his twin sister, Marjorie Johnson Zachariah of Memphis, Tenn.; his nine children: Linda Kay Johnson France of Rodeo, Larry Marvin Johnson of Hercules, Phyllis Ann Johnson of Richmond, Steven Wayne Johnson of Kensington, Rebecca Sue Johnson O'Leary of Sacramento, Joda Leigh Johnson Jackson of Richmond, William Thomas Johnson of Falcon, Colo., Robert Alan Johnson of Walnut Creek, Mary Elizabeth Johnson Taylor of Martinez; his sons and daughters-in-law: Gwen Vollen-Johnson, Ron O'Leary, Joe Jackson, Nanette Johnson, Kristen Johnson and Kathy Dubois-Johnson; his nineteen grandchildren: Aaron France, Joshua and Ryan Johnson and Maryann Johnson Maurice, Kyle, Kevin and Stacey Stewart, Michael Laughlin, Russell O'Leary, Andrea and Colleen Jackson, Michael, Alicia, Sean and Curtis Johnson, Justine, Jacob and Jeffrey Johnson and Madisyn Taylor; and his eight great-grandchildren and extended family members.

Mr. Joe C. Cook

Mr. Joe Civis Cook, age 74, resident of De Queen, Arkansas, died Thursday, April, 28, 2005, at his home.

He was born to Lawrence Albert and Iva Mae Price Cook at Nantahala, North Carolina, on November 3, 1930. He was retired from the U.S. Marines, serving in the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts, and was a retired employee of Wal-Mart. He was of the Baptist faith, and enjoyed fishing and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Joan Elizabeth Butler Cook of De Queen; one son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence and Emma Cook of Winthrop, Ark.; one daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and Paul Lewis of De Queen; two brothers, Eugene Cook of Fairton, NJ, and Daniel Cook of Paoli, Penn.; two sisters, Jewell Williams of Natchitoches, La., and Loretta Targett of Daretown, NJ; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services was held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 3, 2005 in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Homer Frachiseur officiating. Burial followed in the Chapel Hill cemetery.

Public viewing was Monday, May 2, 2005 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Barnett Beard

Mr. Barnett Connor Beard, age 75, a resident of Grannis, AR, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005 in the Christus St. Michael Healthcare System in Texarkana.

He was born July 10, 1929 in Thornton, Texas to John Wesley and Emma Francis Wingard Beard. He was a railroad car repairman for Weyerhaeuser for 19 years, a Federal Railroad Administrator M.P.&E.; Inspector, enjoyed fishing and gardening, a veteran of the Korean War, was a member of the First United Methodist Church in De Queen, a member of the Lindale Park Masonic Lodge 1347 in Houston, Tex., and Past Patron of Silver Hill Chapter 542 OES in Gillham.

Mr. Beard is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Lou (Etchison) Beard; one son and daughter-in-law, Curtis and Jan Beard of Houston, Tex., one brother, Howard beard of Kerrville, Tex.; four sisters, Nita Jones of Ingram, Tex., Mildred McCants of Coldsprings, Tex., Lois Loosemore and Joyce Bjorn, both of LaPorte, Tex.; one granddaughter, Tiffiney Marie Christopher and her husband, David; one grandson, Brock Connor Beard; three great-grandsons, Drake, Ty, and Trentin; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Beard were held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 29, 2005 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Bill Fish and Richard Leach officiating. Burial followed in the Mineral cemetery in Gillham. The family received friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, April 28, at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospital.

Carl Young

Carl Junior Young, age 80, of De Queen, died Thursday, April 28, 2005 at the Willis Knighten Hospital in Shreveport, La. He was born in Dierks, Ark. on February 12, 1925 to the late Carl and Dora Barnes Young. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a younger brother, Doyle "Bunk" Young.

He was a retired Dierks business owner and member of Memorial Missionary Baptist Church for the past 32 years. He was a World War II Veteran. He was in the battles and campaigns of Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. His recognitions and citations were the European African Middle East Theatre Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, World War II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and two overseas bars.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Helen Turner Young; three daughters and sons-in-law, Carlene and Ronnie Davis of De Queen, LaQuita and Jr. Cox of Dierks, and Jeanene and Buddy Deen of De Queen; two grandsons, Paul Cox of Nashville, Ark. and Kyle Deen of Hot Springs; two granddaughters, Tajaha Stubbs and Darby Deen, both of De Queen; two great-grandchildren, Michael Vanvoast of De Queen and Addison Cox of Nashville; one sister, Jean Runge, and one brother, Lon "Babe" Young, both of Nashville, Ark.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, April 30, 2005, at the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel in De Queen with Rev. Joe Carlton and Rev. Kenny Fant officiating. Burial followed in the Green's Chapel cemetery in Dierks.

The family received friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., Friday, April 29, at the funeral home.

Savanna Blanton

Savanna Blanton, infant daughter of Jonathan and Rhonda Rich Blanton, died Wednesday, May 4, 2005 in De Queen Regional Medical Center.

She was preceded in death by Vertie and Bob Rich, Michael Rich and Steven Rich.

Survivors include her parents; her grandparents, John and Sue Rich and Steve and Angie Blanton; her great-grandparents, Sonny and Virginia Blanton and David and Mary Talley; and a number of cousins.

Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 6 in Horatio cemetery with Rev. J.L. Walker officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

Ola Shelly

Ola G. Privett Shelly, age 93, a resident of the Milford Community near Lockesburg, passed away Thursday, April 14, 2005 at her home.

She was born in Shirley, Arkansas on April 8, 1912 to Emma and Hiram Privett. She was a farmer and homemaker and attended the Milford Union Church.

Mrs. Shelly was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Cletis Shelly, January 21, 1992, her parents, and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Cessna and Ethel Privett, and Hiram and Blanch Privett.

She is survived by one sister, Emma Dockery Murray and brother-in-law, Raymond Murray of Wickes and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside Funeral Services for Mrs. Shelly were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, April 18, 2005 in the Wrights Chapel cemetery with Rev. J.R. Callicott and Rev. Wesley Blankenship officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

Brenda Gale Baker

Brenda Gale Baker, age 57, a resident of Lockesburg, died Thursday, April 28, 2005 in Wadley Regional Medical Center in Texarkana.

She was born June 11, 1947 in Lockesburg to Nolen and Emily Smith Proctor. She was a homemaker, Baptist, and attended Milford Union Church.

Mrs. Baker is survived by her husband, Reece Baker; one daughter and son-in-law, Lavonna and Robert Dale Wright; one son, Nolen Reece Baker; her parents, Nolen and Emily Proctor, all of Lockesburg; and one step-granddaughter, Courtney Wright of Foreman.

Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Baker were held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, April 30, 2005 in the Bellville cemetery with Rev. J. R. Callicott officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.
