Vera Payne

Mrs. Gardie Vera Forehand Payne, age 81, a resident of De Queen, died Saturday, May 20, 2006 in the Crystal Falls Nursing Center.

She was born June 2, 1924 in Cove to James P. and Nora Mae Price Forehand and was a member of the First Assembly of God Church at Sash, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Payne; her parents; three brothers, Darrell, Mike and Robert; three sisters, Lois, Geneva, and Gracie Bell and a great-grandson, Austin.

She is survived by three sons, Dwight Payne of Lockesburg, Dayne Payne of Horatio, and Darrell Payne of De Queen; one daughter, Margaret Knighten of Foreman; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, May 22 in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J.L. Walker and Rev. Wallace Wooten officiating. Burial followed in the Old Center cemetery.

The family received friends at the funeral home Sunday, May 21 from 2 to 4 p.m.

Vernon Roy Pegues

Vernon Roy Pegues Sr., age 60, a resident of Arlington, Texas passed away Tuesday, April 25, 2006.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Friday at All Nations Assembly of God Church in Arlington. Burial was at 1 p.m. Friday in Dallas-Fort Worth National cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to All Nations Assembly of God Church, 2300 E. Park Row, Arlington, Texas 76010.

Roy was born Aug. 1, 1945, in Omaha. He was a resident of Arlington for 32 years and a member of All Nations Church. Roy was self-employed and was CEO of Texas Cargo Marketing. His favorite delights in life were his wife, children and grandchildren. He often said family is everything there is to life. He was one in a million, loved by many and cherished by all. Everybody knew Roy for his sense of humor; no one could make a person laugh like Roy could. He was, and still is, the light of his children's lives and the best friend his wife could ever ask for.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one granddaughter, Hadley.

He is survived by his wife, Jo Nell Pegues of Arlington; three daughters, Shelley Baldwin and husband, Jeff, of Grapevine, Mandy Buck and husband, Rohan, of Euless, and Rachel Vidaurri and husband, Travis, of Austin; a son, Vernon Roy Pegues Jr. Of Arlington; two brothers, Harold Pegues of Hugo, Okla., and Dearl Pegues of Dangerfield; and three grandchildren, Chandley, Crue and Elijah.

Rev. Phillip Smith

Rev. Phillip Spencer Smith, a resident of De Queen, died Sunday, May 14, 2006 in the Christus St. Michael Health System in Texarkana, Texas.

He was born in Ogden to Bob and Mary Spencer Smith; attended the St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, the Hendrix College in Conway, was an Army veteran, a carpenter, a Mason, and the past pastor of Wylie Chapel in Nashville, St. Paul Church in Eagletown, Okla. and Turner Memorial Chapel in Foreman.

He was preceded in death by a son, Harvey Lee Smith, in 1985.

He is survived by his wife, Faye Lewis Smith of De Queen; one daughter, Penny Smith of Dayton, Ohio; two sisters, Victoria Gibson of Huber Heights, Ohio and Avory Neal of Dallas, Texas; five grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m., Monday, May 22 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Eddie Williamson officiating. Burial followed in the Sand Hill cemetery.

David K. Purtell

David Kyle Purtell, age 59, a resident of Lockesburg, died Friday, May 12, 2006 in the V.A. Hospital in Houston.

He was born Nov. 24, 1946 in De Queen, to Merrie Kyle and Allie Jean Aubrey Purtell, was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran and a member of the Lighthouse Church in Lockesburg.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert “Bobby” Buck Purtell.

He is survived by a son, Bryan Kyle Purtell; two brothers, Benny Purtell and Kelly Purtell both of Lockesburg; three sisters, Lynna Wray of Mineral Springs, Nancy Baker of Lockesburg, and Kerry Hill of Murfreesboro; two grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, May 15 in the Falls Chapel cemetery with Bro. Buster Dellinger officiating under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

Bertha Villa

Mrs. Bertha Z. Carpenter Villa, age 90, a resident of Gillham, died Friday, May 12, 2006 in the De Queen Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 21, 1915 in Mineral to Clarence and Lou Ella Oliver Carpenter, was a retired schoolteacher, a missionary in Colombia, South America, Central America and Mexico, and attended the First Assembly of God Church in De Queen.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Daniel J. Villa in 2004; three daughters, an infant daughter, Delia Villa in 1949 and Darlene Villa in 2006.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, D.E. Villa Sr. of Gillham; two sons, D. Enrique Villa Jr. of Gorman, Texas and David Villa of Lexington, Okla.; two daughters, April Sword of Edom, Texas and Deborah Brown of Gillham; one brother, John Carpenter of Ponca City, Okla.; one sister, Dana Borden of Las Cruces, N.M.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at 6 p.m. Sunday, May 14 in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 15 in the First Assembly of God Church with Rev. D.E. Villa and Dr. Haskell Rycroft officiating. Burial followed in the Mineral cemetery, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home.

Gerald Walters

Gerald L. Walters, age 76, after being a diabetic for 46 years, left this earth peacefully on April 26, 2006 at his home east of Grannis in the Baker Community where he and his wife Faye resided.

He was born March 30, 1930 in Apache Creek, New Mexico, the son of the late Leon and Hazel (Hill) Walters. His dad was a long time rancher and his mother was a school teacher in the Fence Lake, New Mexico area. He was a long time farmer and rancher. He was a veteran of the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. On September 20, 1954 he married Faye McCarley from Quemado, New Mexico. They spent the next 15 years residing in New Mexico, before moving to Arizona, prior to residing in the Baker community they lived in Willcox, Arizona where he was semi retired, but continued to raise cattle.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Bob and Tip Walters.

Survivors include his wife Faye (McCarley) Walters; daughter, Yolanda (Walters) Pace and J.D. of Thatcher, Arizona; son, Deveral (Slim) Walters and Michelle of Edgewood, New Mexico; sisters, Aletha Auringer, Voncelle Johnston and Judy Fetter; granddaughters, Geralyn Bradley and Camilla Davis; grandson, Jacob Pace; four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 1, 2006 at 10:00 a.m., in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel in De Queen, Arkansas with Chaplain Shawn Hicks officiating. Interment followed in the Baker cemetery.

Christine Westbrook

Christine Janell Westbrook, age 59, a resident of De Queen, died Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at her home.

She was born Sept. 29, 1946 in Idabel, Okla. to Floyd Gene and Allie Marie Sutton Westbrook, was a homemaker and a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Floyd Gene Westbrook Jr.

She is survived by one son, Floyd Vincent Anderson of Longview, Texas; one daughter, Janis Day of De Queen; one brother, Ricky Dean Westbrook of Okla. and four grandchildren

Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 25 in the Broken Bow cemetery with Rev. Bobby Neal officiating, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home.
