Edith Orr Carroll
Mrs. Edith Orr Carroll, age 93, died Saturday, September 10, 2005 in the Brookewood Nursing Center.
She was born, February 17, 1912 in King, Ark. to James Sidney and Virgie Clements Orr. She married
Henry Carroll on November 14, 1930. She was a member of the Baptist Church for 81 years and a member of the Lone Oak Baptist Church since its organization in 1942. She was the oldest member of the church.
Mrs. Carroll was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Carroll, her parents, two brothers, Vernon Orr and Connie Orr; two sisters, Ethel Hill and Lola Lovell and son-in-law, J.W. Butler.
She is survived by one son, Kenneth Carroll, Sr. of North Little Rock, Ark.; one daughter, Barbara Butler of Gurdon, Ark.; two brothers, Napoleon Orr of Springdale, Ark. and Edgar Jr. Orr of Minneapolis, Minn.; her grandchildren, Dennis Jones of Gurdon, Donnie Jones of Scott, Ark., Diana Jones O'Bryant of Gravelly, Ark., Pollyanna Smith of Horatio, Ark., Barbara Batchelor of Carrollton, Ga., Kenneth W. Carroll Jr. of Clifton, Va., and Susan Smitherman of Sherwood, Ark. Her great-grandchildren are Joshua Jones of Russellville, Ark., Rachel Jones Jeter of Gurdon, Patrick Jones of Little Rock, Donnie Jones of Washington, Patrick O'Bryant, Michael O'Bryant and James O'Bryant all of Gravelly, Ark., Matthew Carroll of Clifton, Va., Jeffery, Joshua, Jonathan and Jacob Smith of Horatio, Ark., Christopher, Benjamin and Casey Batchelor of Carrollton, Ga., and Sonnet and Shelby Smitherman of North Little Rock, Ark. Her great-great-grandchildren Lakeyn Smith and Jayce Clark, Christopher and Sean O'Bryant of Gravelly, Ark., Samantha Jones of Memphis, Tenn., Hayden and Tyler Jeter of Gurdon, Ark.; and several nieces and nephews and many friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Carroll were held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, September 12, 2005 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel in De Queen with Dennis Jones and Randy Davis officiating. Burial followed in the Oddfellows cemetery in Lockesburg, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.
The family received friends at 1:00 p.m. Monday at the Wilkerson Family Center, next to the funeral home.
Mrs. Thelma Chandler
Mrs. Thelma Lorene Lawley Chandler, age 74, resident of Horatio, Arkansas, died Tuesday, August 30, 2005 at her home.
She was born to Willie D. and Cora Adeline Horton Lawley at Thomas, Oklahoma, on January 24, 1931. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church of Horatio. She was a retired employee of Fred's Discount Store, as well as a homemaker. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, her flowers, travel, crafts, and especially her grandchildren.
Mrs. Chandler was preceded in death by her parents, and a grandson, Scott Corey Young.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, James B. Chandler of Horatio; two sons and daughters-in-law, Darrell and Kay Chandler of Horatio, and Ronny and Beverly Chandler also of Horatio; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Sam Young of De Queen; one brother, Alvie D. Lawley of Henrietta, Okla.; two sisters, Marie Griffin of De Queen; and Wanda Decker of Horatio; seven grandchildren, Blake Chandler, Misty Ward, Stacy Williamson, Mike Chandler, Curtis Chandler, Clint Young, and Brent Young, nine great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mrs. Thelma Chandler were held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 1, 2005 in the First Assembly of God Church in Horatio with Bro. J. L. Walker and Bro. Ralph Staggs officiating. Burial followed in the Horatio cemetery, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen. The family received friends at the funeral home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 31st.
Mildred White
Mildred Marie Miller White, age 94, formerly of Lockesburg and a resident of Brookewood Nursing Center died Monday, August 29, 2005.
She was born May 8, 1911 in Nashville, Arkansas. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Mrs. White was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Raymond Fletcher White on June 26, 1993, two sons, one granddaughter, one sister, and one brother.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn and Boyd Roberts of Lockesburg; five grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services for Mrs. White were held at 4:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 31, 2005 in the Odd-Fellows cemetery in Lockesburg with Bro. Wallace Wooten officiating, under direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.
The family received friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 30, at the funeral home.
The family met at the home of Boyd and Evelyn Roberts at 101 W. Pine in Lockesburg.
Ruth Newton
Ruth Newton, age 86, resident of Foreman, died Friday, Sept. 2, 2005 in Little River Memorial Hospital.
She was born April 7, 1919 to Tom and Mary Etta Wright Porter; was a homemaker; and a Baptist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Newton on Oct. 18, 1990; five brothers; two sisters; and one great-grandchild, Kaitlyn Hollowell.
She is survived by one son, Perry Newton of Winthrop; one daughter, Polly Magby of Foreman; one brother, Wayne Porter of Jacksonville; one sister, Betty Willis of Benton; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3 in Alleene cemetery with Donnie DeLoney officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.
Linda Faye (Turner) Simmons
Linda Faye (Turner) Simmons, age 48, of Langley died Thursday, September 1, 2005 after a long battle with cancer.
She was born on October 30, 1956, at Longview, Washington, the daughter of Luther Turner and Ruby McCauley Turner. On October 2, 1993, she was married
to Jessie Simmons.
She was a very strong, caring, Christian woman, a member of Meredian Baptist Church of Crossett and loved everyone. She was a wonderful wife, mother, and Nana. She graduated from Crossett High School in 1975 and graduated from Baptist Medical Center School of Practicing Nurses in 1976. She worked at the Pike County Health Unit as a LPN for eight years.
She is survived by her husband, Jessie W. (Sonny) Simmons, of Langley; her parents, Luther and Ruby Turner, of Langley; one sister and brother-in-law, Diane and Benny Kelley of Langley; three daughters and three sons-in-law, Dana and Darin McCoy of Nashville, Jenny and Paul Blankenship of Langley, and Nikki and Josh Neel of Langley; three grandsons, Jacob McCoy, Maverick Blankenship, and Jordan Neel; nine nephews and nieces; and eight great-nephews and nieces.
Services were held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, September 5, 2005, in the Davis-Smith Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Joe Short officiating.
Visitation was Sunday evening, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Interment was in the Mount Joy cemetery, under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood.
Mary Grapes Wright
Mrs. Mary Grapes Wright, age 83, resident of De Queen and formerly of Hatfield, died Sunday, Aug. 28, 2005 in Brookewood Nursing Center.
She was born Oct. 28, 1921 in South Haven, Kan., to William Aaron and Nettie Cary Grapes; was a homemaker and cook for the Hatfield School District; and a member of Zatra Church of Christ and the Hatfield P.T.A.
She is survived by three sons, Edward Wright and William Wright, both of Hatfield, and Randy Wright of Nashoa, Okla.; two daughters, Jeanie Downs of Appomattox, Va., and Shirley Sanden of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 1 in Zatra Church of Christ under the direction of Hall Funeral Services of Mena.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Brookewood Nursing Center, 322 W. Collin Raye Dr., De Queen AR 71832.
Nina L. Deaton
Mrs. Nina L. Deaton, age 83, resident of Dierks, died Friday, Aug. 26, 2005 in the Dierks Nursing Center.
She was born Tuesday, April 4, 1922 in Battiest, Okla., to William and Vina Judge Morris; was a homemaker; and a member of Dierks Assembly of God Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vertis Deaton on Nov. 30, 1987; four brothers, Jim Morris, Virgil Morris, Opal Morris and Dewey Morris; and one sister, Ester Meek.
She is survived by one son, Elvis Deaton of Coushatta, La.; three daughters, Shelba McClain of Fordyce, Gwen Gilbert of Hope, and Brenda Hill of Dierks; two brothers, Woodrow Morris of Spiro, Okla., and Arnis Morris of Muleshoe, Tex.; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28 in Dierks Assembly of God Church with Glen Launius and Arthur Baker officiating. Burial will follow in McHorse cemetery in Provo, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in Dierks.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27 at the funeral home in Dierks.
