J.C. Phillips
John Carl Phillips, age 77, a resident of De Queen, and former resident of Greenwood, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006, in the Crystal Falls Healthcare Nursing Facility in De Queen.
He was born August 8, 1928 in Morton, Texas to John Monroe and Bessie Ann Cates Phillips, was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Marines, and retired from Texaco Oil company with 35 years of service.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Harvey Bee Phillips and Alva Lee Phillips.
He is survived by two daughters, Verna A. Smith of De Queen and B. Diane Schafer of North Little Rock; one son, Roy "Rolo" A. Phillips of Grandbury, Texas; four brothers, Claude Phillips and Leroy Phillips of Victoria, Texas, James Phillips of League City, Texas, and Kenneth Phillips of Stavanget, Norway; five sisters, Bertha Lopez of Bullhead City, Ariz., Hazel Graham of Mathis, Texas, June Maxwell of Temple, Texas, Laverne Pratt of Yorktown, Texas, and Delores "Lori" Strege of League City, Texas; six grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, March 6 in the Mt. Harmony cemetery under the direction of McConnell Funeral Home in Greenwood.
Rachel Jameson
Rachel Caddell, Ward, Peters, Jameson, Died Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2006 in Eureka Springs.
She was born March 13, 1913 in Sevier County to Albert and Sally Martin.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Frank Martin and Wallace Martin; three sisters, Ollie Almond, Pearl Almond, Minnie Moore; her son, Larry Daniel Caddell; husbands, Clarence Caddell, William Ward, and John Peters.
She is survived by her daughter, Itha Kay of Eureka Springs; a son, William Wayne Ward of Tempe, Ariz., three grandchildren and five great-granchildren.
Arrangements were with Smith Family Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Berniece Mayo
Mrs. Berniece Arlene Frady Mayo, age 81, resident of De Queen, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2006 in the De Queen Medical Center.
She was born Sept. 11, 1924 in Cerro Gordo to Lymon William and Samantha Ellie Henson Frady, she was a homemaker, retired owner of Berniece's Beauty Shop, a member of the Horatio Garden Club and attended the First Baptist Church of Horatio.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, James Willis Frady, Lymon Frady, Jr., and Willie D. Frady; two sisters, Gertrude Suttles and Syble Ann Henderson; and her husband in 1996, William Gale Mayo.
She is survived by one son, James Owen, Jr. of Kempner, Texas; one brother, Harold G. Frady of Shreveport, La.; one sister, Hazel Jennings of De Queen; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28 in the Horatio cemetery with Rev. J. L. Walker officiating, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home.
Harry Phil Bevis Jr.
Harry Phil Bevis Jr., age 37, a resident of Genoa, died Friday, March 17, 2006 at his home.
He was born March 16, 1969 in Dyersburg, Tenn.
He is survived by his father, Harry Field Bevis Sr. of Dyersburg, Tenn.; his mother and step-father, Edna and Dale Gibson of Garland City; a sister, Wendy Beard of Genoa; a brother, Gary Bevis of Horatio; a half sister, Lyanne Bevis and a half brother, Phillip Bevis both of Tenn.; a step sister, Christina Genrich of Topeka, Kan., and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m., Monday, March 20, at Genoa Central Church of Christ cemetery with Frank McFerrin officiating. Burial followed under the direction of Texarkana Funeral Home.
The family received friends from 5-6:30 p.m., Sunday, March 19, at the Texarkana Funeral Home.
A.L. Barker Jr.
Arthur Lee Barker Jr., age 67, a resident of Tipton, died Wednesday, March 1, 2006 at his home.
He was born on Dec. 5, 1938 in McMillan, Okla. to Arthur Lee and Clara Elmore Barker, was the owner of Barker Plumbing, and attended Primitivie Baptist Church in Grandfield.
He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Lee Barker Sr.; his mother and step-father, Clara and Loide Maines; and a brother, Bill Barker.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte of Tipton; two sons, Art Barker of Anadarko, and Craig Barker of Gainesville, Texas; two daughters, Lynne Strickland of Blair, and Melitta Robinson of De Queen; one brother, Jim Barker of Gainesville, Texas; one sister, Le Maddux of Euless, Texas; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 4 at the Jackson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gary Strickland and Rev. Jenny Wynn officiating. Burial will followed in the Hollister cemetery under the direction of Jackson Funeral Home of Frederick.
Visitation was on Friday, March 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Edwin O. Priest
Edwin O. "Bud" Priest, age 79, a resident of Texarkana, died Thursday, March 23, 2006 in Texarkana.
He was born Sept. 3, 1926 in Sevier County to Fred Sr. and Minnie Priest, and was a service station operator.
He is survived by his wife, Nellie White Priest of Texarkana; one brother, Nathan Priest of DeValls Bluff; two sisters, Dot Kitts of Yakima, Wash. and Fay Lawson Brewer of Horatio and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 26 in the Old Piney cemetery with Blake Dunn officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.
Johnie Bartley Simmons
Mr. Johnie Bartley Simmons, age 88, a resident of Dierks, died Wednesday, March 15, 2006 in the De Queen Medical Center.
He was born February 26, 1918 in the Burg Community to Paul and Emma Carter Simmons. He was an employee for Dierks Forrest, a retired logger, a member of the Liberty Hill Church of Christ since 1941 and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Simmons is survived by his wife of 66 years, Gerline Kesterson Simmons; two sons, Harold Edwin Simmons of Ashdown and Johnny Ray Simmons and his wife, Kathy, of Dierks; one daughter, Carolyn Carver and her husband, Mike, of Lockesburg; one brother, Jessie Simmons and one sister, Mertie Pannell, both of Umpire; eight grandchildren, Kim Carver and her husband, Todd, of Lockesburg, Debbie Turner and her husband, Phillip, Teresa Thornton and her husband, Tommy, and Terry Simmons, all of Ashdown, Rhonda Woods and her husband, John Jr., of Dierks, Danny Simmons of Texarkana, Ark., Lisa Ward and her husband, David, of Dierks, and Russell Carver of Lockesburg; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two daughters-in-law, Jimmy Ann Shelton of Haworth and Wanda Arnaud of Memphis, Tenn.
Funeral services for Mr. Simmons were held at 2 p.m., Friday, March 17, 2006 in the Liberty Hill Church of Christ with Bro. Gene Jester and the Rev. Glen Launius officiating. Burial followed in the Burg cemetery under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in Dierks.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, March 16, at the funeral home in Dierks and viewing was at his home from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Friday.
Jean Jones Tollett
Mrs. Jean Jones Tollett, age 76, a resident of De Queen, Arkansas died Saturday, March 4, 2006 at her home.
She was born September 28, 1929 in North Carolina to Oliver and Nancy Jones. She was retired from First State Bank, served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Rock Hill Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, O.E. Jones and Bill Jones; and one sister, Vivian Logston.
Mrs. Tollett is survived by her husband, Marvin Tollett, and cat, Bo; one sister-in-law, Louise Jones; and one nephew Dennis Jones.
Funeral services for Mrs. Tollett were held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 7, 2006 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Charles Jones officiating. Burial followed in the Green's Chapel cemetery under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.
The family was at the home of Linda Power.
