Donald Wesley Park

Donald Wesley Park, born February 13, 1943 passed surrounded by his loving family on April 9, 2006. A resident of De Queen, Arkansas he was a lifelong educator and held numerous academic and administrative positions during his career, most recently at Cossatot Community College at the University of Arkansas.

A native of Alton, Illinois he was a 1967 graduate of the University of Illinois with a Masters of Science in Botany.

As an educator he was also a lifelong student and had a passion for knowledge. Don was an avid reader, auto aficionado, and talented gardener.

He was preceded in death by his father George Wesley Park. He is survived by his adoring wife, Monika; his loving mother, Clarabel; his devoted children, Matthew, Rachel, Amy, Andrew and Aaron; and his grandchildren Samuel, Katie, Liam, and Blake.

Don lived an extraordinary life and leaves behind a large extended family and many great friends who will all miss his sense of humor, reassuring voice, and lust for life.

Private memorial services will be held by his family.

Father David Jacobs

Father David Jacobs, former pastor of St. Paul Catholic Church in Pocahontas died on Saturday, April 15, 2006 in Little Rock.

He was born in Malvern, the son of the late E. J. and Christine Jacobs. A convert to Catholicism, he later entered Holy Trinity Seminary in Irving, Texas and was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood by Bishop Andrew J. McDonald on May 24, 1975 for service in the diocese of Little Rock. His assignments included teaching at Mount Saint Mary Academy with residence at Our Lady of the Holy Souls. After five years he left the Mount to become the associate pastor at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, North Little Rock. His first pastorate was St. Barbara in De Queen, with the mission churches of Foreman and Nashville. He became Pastor of St. John in Russellville, a position he held for ten years. In 1996 he was named pastor of St. Edward Church in Texarkana, and two years later he assumed his last pastorate at St. Paul Church in Pocahontas and St. John the Baptist in Engelberg. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Central Arkansas Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

Father Jacobs is survived by two brothers, Jerry Don Jacobs of Donaldson, Arkansas and N. Thomas Jacobs of Sheridan; a sister, Sandra Straczek of Malvern; and a good friend and caregiver, Keith H. Davis.

Father Jacobs had a great love of the priesthood. His special love of music moved him to improve or add pipe organs to virtually all of the parishes to which he was assigned. The last two years of his life were marked by tremendous suffering, but without complaint.

Visitation took place on Tuesday, April 18th from 5 - 7 p.m. at the Church of St. Paul, Pocahontas, followed by a rosary at 7 p.m. with Bishop J. Peter Sartain presiding. He was assisted by Rev. Thomas Marks. Mass of Christian Burial was concelebrated at St. John Catholic Church, Malvern on Wednesday at 2 p.m. with Bishop J. Peter Sartain presiding. Burial took place at Malvern. Memorials may be directed in Father Jacob's honor to St. Paul Catholic Church, Pocahontas, St. Vincent's Hospice, or the Central Arkansas Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

Arrangements are under the direction of McNabb Funeral Home in Pocahontas.

Sue R. Dunn

Sue R. Dunn, age 72, a resident of Fayetteville, died April 5, 2006.

She was born Oct. 11, 1903 in Vicksburg, Miss., to Emma Buena Matthews and William E. Rater.

She is survived by one son, Bruce D. Dunn of Fayetteville; two sisters, Ila V. Blount of Springdale and Mary Ann Lewis of Canadaigua, New York; two brothers, William E. Rater of Fort Worth, Texas and Charles A. Rater of Houston, Texas.

She graduated from De Queen High School in 1951, attended the Henderson State Teachers College in Arkadelphia and the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, was a secretary for Deltic Farm and Timber Co. Inc. retired in 1992 after 26 years from Murphy Oil Corporation in El Dorado, and was a Methodist.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Circle of Life Hospice, 901 Jones Rd., Springdale, AR 72762, Community Hospice, 1426 Northwest Ave. El Dorado, AR 71730 or Habitat for Humanity of Washington Co, 308 Park, Fayetteville, AR 72701.

Graveside memorial services will be held at the Campground cemetery in Hampton on April 29. Exact time to be announced. Cremation was by Moore’s Chapel of Fayetteville.

OPAL BARTHOLOMEW

Opal Bartholomew, 91, of Elkins, died Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at Washington Regional Medical Center.

She was born March 21, 1916 at Kennett, Missouri, the daughter of Thomas Kentionand Lula Belle Jackson Stilley. She was preceded in death by her husband, A. J. “Bart” Bartholomew and a son, Richard J. Cantwell.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by: Three daughters:

Monda Davis of Alabama
Carole Brown of Missouri
Christy Cantwell of Elkins

Four sons:

Jack Cantwell of Oregon
John Cantwell of New Mexico
Buck Cantwell of Oregon
Paul Cantwell of Texas

A brother: Hamilton Stilley of Indiana

Twenty-six grandchildren
Thirty-seven great-grandchildren
Fifteen great-great-grandchildren

Cremation was by Moore’s Chapel, memorial service will be held at a later date.

SARAH ROBINSON

Sarah Lucy Robinson, 36, of Springdale, died Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at Washington Regional Medical Center.

She was born March 25, 1971 at Wellingborough, Northhamptonshire, England, the daughter of Trevor Edward James and Christine Hall Robinson.

She was a member of the Robinson Avenue Church of Christ in Springdale.

She is survived by: Her mother: Christine Robinson of Springdale, AR

Her father and step-mother: Trevor & Kathy Robinson of Rogers, AR

Her sister: Victoria Jane Robinson of Springdale

Maternal grandparents: Robert & Winifred Hall of Kettering, England

Service: 3:00 pm, Friday, June 22 at Moore’s Chapel

Memorials may be made to: Muscular Dystrophy Association, Razorback Chapter, 6101 Highway 271 South, Ft. Smith, AR 72908

JAMES F. ATHA

James Franklin Atha, 81 a life long resident of Northwest Arkansas, died Friday, June 29, 2007 at Washington Regional Medical Center.

He was born August 30, 1925 in Wesley, Arkansas, the son of Samuel Lawrence and Dessie Goldie Thomas Atha. He was a retired manager of City Lumber Company where he was employed for over 26 years. He enjoyed being outdoors and was an avid gardener. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leta Lucille Allison Atha of 50 years. .

He is survived by:Two Sons: Gary F. Atha and his wife Teresa of Fayetteville, AR

Larry D. Atha and his wife Adele of Fayetteville, AR

6 Grandchildren: Allison, Jenna, Kristin, Jonathan Atha, all of Fayetteville, Brandon and Whitney Atha of Russellville, AR

Several nieces and nephews and other relatives

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Moore’s Chapel. Burial will be in Wesley cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Moore’s Chapel
